1»So machten wir denn kehrt, zogen nach der Wüste hin in der Richtung nach dem Schilfmeer, wie der HERR mir geboten hatte, und wanderten lange Zeit im Bogen um das Gebirge Seir herum.
2Da sagte der HERR zu mir:
3›Ihr seid nun lange genug um dieses Gebirge herumgezogen; wendet euch jetzt nordwärts
4und gib dem Volk folgende Weisung: Ihr seid jetzt im Begriff, das Gebiet eurer Brüder, der Nachkommen Esaus, die in Seir wohnen, zu durchziehen, und sie werden Furcht vor euch haben; aber hütet euch wohl,
5Krieg mit ihnen anzufangen! Denn ich werde euch nichts von ihrem Lande geben, auch nicht einen Fußbreit, weil ich das Gebirge Seir dem Esau als Erbbesitz gegeben habe.
6Lebensmittel für euren Bedarf sollt ihr von ihnen für Geld kaufen, und sogar Wasser zum Trinken sollt ihr von ihnen für Geld erstehen;
7denn der HERR, dein Gott, hat dich in all deinen Unternehmungen gesegnet; er hat sich deiner während deiner Wanderung durch diese große Wüste angenommen; nun schon vierzig Jahre hindurch ist der HERR, dein Gott, mit dir gewesen, so daß es dir an nichts gemangelt hat.‹
8So wanderten wir denn weiter, weg von unseren Brüdern, den Nachkommen Esaus, die in Seir wohnten, weg von der Straße durch die Niederung (am Jordan), weg von Elath und Ezjon-Geber, änderten dann die Marschrichtung und schlugen den Weg nach der Steppe der Moabiter ein.
9Da sagte der HERR zu mir: ›Greife die Moabiter nicht an und laß dich in keinen Krieg mit ihnen ein! Denn ich werde dir von ihrem Lande nichts zum Besitz geben, weil ich Ar den Nachkommen Lots als Besitztum gegeben habe.‹
10[Ehemals haben die Emiter darin gewohnt, ein großes, zahlreiches und hochgewachsenes Volk wie die Enakiter.
11Auch sie wurden, wie die Enakiter, für Rephaiter gehalten; die Moabiter aber nannten sie Emiter.
12Und in Seir wohnten ehemals die Horiter; aber die Nachkommen Esaus verdrängten sie aus ihrem Besitz, rotteten sie vor sich her aus und ließen sich an ihrer Statt nieder, gerade so wie Israel es mit dem von ihm besetzten Lande gemacht hat, das der HERR ihnen gegeben hatte.] –
13›Macht euch also jetzt auf und zieht über den Fluß Sered!‹ Da zogen wir über den Fluß Sered.
14Die Zeit unserer Wanderung aber von Kades-Barnea bis zu unserm Übergang über den Fluß Sered hat achtunddreißig Jahre betragen, bis das ganze Geschlecht der kriegstüchtigen Männer aus dem Lager weggestorben war, wie der HERR es ihnen zugeschworen hatte.
15Es war aber auch die Hand des HERRN gegen sie gewesen, um sie aus dem Lager bis auf den letzten Mann zu vertilgen.
16Als nun die kriegstüchtigen Männer sämtlich aus dem Volke weggestorben waren,
17sagte der HERR so zu mir:
18›Du bist jetzt im Begriff, die Grenze der Moabiter zu überschreiten, an Ar vorüber,
19und wirst nun in die Nähe des Gebiets der Ammoniter kommen. Greife sie nicht an und laß dich in keinen Krieg mit ihnen ein! Denn ich werde dir vom Lande der Ammoniter nichts zum Besitz geben, weil ich es den Nachkommen Lots zum Erbbesitz verliehen habe.‹ –
20[Für ein Land der Rephaiter wird auch dieses gehalten: Rephaiter haben ehemals in ihm gewohnt, welche die Ammoniter aber Samsummiter nannten:
21ein großes, zahlreiches und hochgewachsenes Volk wie die Enakiter; aber der HERR rottete sie vor ihnen her aus, so daß diese ihnen ihr Land wegnahmen und sich an ihrer Statt niederließen,
22wie er es auch bei den Nachkommen Esaus, die in Seir wohnen, getan hat, vor denen er die Horiter ausrottete, so daß sie ihnen ihr Land wegnahmen und sich an ihrer Statt bis auf den heutigen Tag niedergelassen haben.
23Auch die Awwiter, die in Gehöften bis Gaza hin wohnten, wurden von den Kaphthoritern ausgerottet, die aus Kaphthor ausgewandert waren und sich an ihrer Statt ansiedelten.] –
24›Brecht nun unverweilt auf und geht über den Fluß Arnon! Ich gebe hiermit den Amoriter Sihon, den König von Hesbon, und sein Land in deine Gewalt. Mache dich sofort an die Eroberung und greife ihn mit den Waffen an!
25Vom heutigen Tage an will ich Furcht und Schrecken vor dir sich auf die Völker unter dem ganzen Himmel lagern lassen: wenn sie nur die Kunde von dir vernehmen, sollen sie vor dir zittern und beben!‹«
26»Da schickte ich Gesandte aus der Wüste Kedemoth an Sihon, den König von Hesbon, mit folgender friedlichen Botschaft:
27›Laß mich durch dein Land hindurchziehen! ich will überall auf der Landstraße bleiben und weder nach rechts noch nach links davon abweichen.
28Lebensmittel zum Unterhalt sollst du mir für Geld verkaufen und ebenso Wasser zum Trinken mir für Geld überlassen: ich will lediglich zu Fuß hindurchziehen –
29wie auch die Nachkommen Esaus, die in Seir wohnen, und die Moabiter, die in Ar wohnen, es mit mir gehalten haben –, bis ich über den Jordan in das Land hinüberziehe, das der HERR, unser Gott, uns geben will.‹
30Aber Sihon, der König von Hesbon, wollte uns den Durchzug durch sein Land nicht gestatten; denn der HERR, dein Gott, hatte seinen Sinn hart und sein Herz trotzig gemacht, um ihn in deine Gewalt zu geben, wie der heutige Tag es klar zeigt.
31Da sagte der HERR zu mir: ›Du weißt, daß ich Sihon und sein Land dir bereits preisgegeben habe; mache dich sofort an die Besetzung seines Landes, um es einzunehmen!‹
32Als nun Sihon uns mit seinem ganzen Kriegsvolk entgegenzog, um bei Jahaz mit uns zu kämpfen,
33gab ihn der HERR, unser Gott, in unsere Gewalt, so daß wir ihn samt seinen Söhnen und seinem ganzen Kriegsvolk besiegten.
34Wir eroberten damals alle seine Städte und vollstreckten in jeder Ortschaft den Bann an Männern, Weibern und Kindern, ohne einen einzigen entrinnen zu lassen;
35nur das Vieh und den Raub aus den von uns eroberten Städten behielten wir als Beute für uns.
36Von Aroer, das am Ufer des Arnonflusses liegt, und überhaupt von den Städten, die an dem Flusse liegen, bis nach Gilead hin gab es keinen einzigen festen Platz, der für uns uneinnehmbar gewesen wäre; alles gab der HERR, unser Gott, in unsere Gewalt.
37Nur das Land der Ammoniter habt ihr unberührt gelassen, alles, was seitwärts vom Flusse Jabbok liegt, und die Ortschaften im Berglande, überhaupt alles, was der HERR, unser Gott, uns verboten hatte.«

1Y VOLVIMOS, y partímonos al desierto camino del mar Bermejo, como Jehová me había dicho; y rodeamos el monte de Seir por muchos días.
2Y Jehová me habló, diciendo:
3Harto habéis rodeado este monte; volveos al aquilón.
4Y manda al pueblo, diciendo: Pasando vosotros por el término de vuestros hermanos los hijos de Esaú, que habitan en Seir, ellos tendrán miedo de vosotros; mas vosotros guardaos mucho:
5No os metáis con ellos; que no os daré de su tierra ni aun la holladura de la planta de un pie; porque yo he dado por heredad á Esaú el monte de Seir.
6Compraréis de ellos por dinero las viandas, y comeréis; y también compraréis de ellos el agua, y beberéis:
7Pues Jehová tu Dios te ha bendecido en toda obra de tus manos: él sabe que andas por este gran desierto: estos cuarenta años Jehová tu Dios fué contigo; y ninguna cosa te ha faltado.
8Y pasamos de nuestros hermanos los hijos de Esaú, que habitaban en Seir, por el camino de la llanura de Elath y de Esiongeber. Y volvimos, y pasamos camino del desierto de Moab.
9Y Jehová me dijo: No molestes á Moab, ni te empeñes con ellos en guerra, que no te daré posesión de su tierra; porque yo he dado á Ar por heredad á los hijos de Lot.
10(Los Emimeos habitaron en ella antes, pueblo grande, y numeroso, y alto como gigantes:
11Por gigantes eran ellos también contados, como los Anaceos; y los Moabitas los llaman Emimeos.
12Y en Seir habitaron antes los Horeos, á los cuales echaron los hijos de Esaú; y los destruyeron de delante de sí, y moraron en lugar de ellos; como hizo Israel en la tierra de su posesión que les dió Jehová.)
13Levantaos ahora, y pasad el arroyo de Zered. Y pasamos el arroyo de Zered.
14Y los días que anduvimos de Cades-barnea hasta que pasamos el arroyo de Zered, fueron treinta y ocho años; hasta que se acabó toda la generación de los hombres de guerra de en medio del campo, como Jehová les había jurado.
15Y también la mano de Jehová fué sobre ellos para destruirlos de en medio del campo, hasta acabarlos.
16Y aconteció que cuando se hubieron acabado de morir todos los hombres de guerra de entre el pueblo,
17Jehová me habló, diciendo:
18Tú pasarás hoy el término de Moab, á Ar,
19Y te acercarás delante de los hijos de Ammón: no los molestes, ni te metas con ellos; porque no te tengo de dar posesión de la tierra de los hijos de Ammón; que á los hijos de Lot la he dado por heredad.
20(Por tierra de gigantes fué también ella tenida: habitaron en ella gigantes en otro tiempo, á los cuales los Ammonitas llamaban Zomzommeos;
21Pueblo grande, y numeroso, y alto, como los Anaceos; á los cuales Jehová destruyó de delante de los Ammonitas, quienes les sucedieron, y habitaron en su lugar:
22Como hizo con los hijos de Esaú, que habitaban en Seir, de delante de los cuales destruyó á los Horeos; y ellos les sucedieron, y habitaron en su lugar hasta hoy.
23Y á los Heveos que habitaban en Haserin hasta Gaza, los Caftoreos que salieron de Caftor los destruyeron, y habitaron en su lugar.)
24Levantaos, partid, y pasad el arroyo de Arnón: he aquí he dado en tu mano á Sehón rey de Hesbón, Amorrheo, y á su tierra: comienza á tomar posesión, y empéñate con él en guerra.
25Hoy comenzaré á poner tu miedo y tu espanto sobre los pueblos debajo de todo el cielo; los cuales oirán tu fama, y temblarán, y angustiarse han delante de ti.
26Y envié mensajeros desde el desierto de Cademoth á Sehón rey de Hesbón, con palabras de paz, diciendo:
27Pasaré por tu tierra por el camino: por el camino iré, sin apartarme á diestra ni á siniestra:
28La comida me venderás por dinero, y comeré: el agua también me darás por dinero, y beberé: solamente pasaré á pie;
29Como lo hicieron conmigo los hijos de Esaú que habitaban en Seir, y los Moabitas que habitaban en Ar; hasta que pase el Jordán á la tierra que nos da Jehová nuestro Dios.
30Mas Sehón rey de Hesbón no quiso que pasásemos por el territorio suyo; porque Jehová tu Dios había endurecido su espíritu, y obstinado su corazón para entregarlo en tu mano, como hoy.
31Y díjome Jehová: He aquí yo he comenzado á dar delante de ti á Sehón y á su tierra; comienza á tomar posesión, para que heredes su tierra.
32Y saliónos Sehón al encuentro, él y todo su pueblo, para pelear en Jaas.
33Mas Jehová nuestro Dios lo entregó delante de nosotros; y herimos á él y á sus hijos, y á todo su pueblo.
34Y tomamos entonces todas sus ciudades, y destruimos todas las ciudades, hombres, y mujeres, y niños; no dejamos ninguno:
35Solamente tomamos para nosotros las bestias, y los despojos de las ciudades que habíamos tomado.
36Desde Aroer, que está junto á la ribera del arroyo de Arnón, y la ciudad que está en el arroyo, hasta Galaad, no hubo ciudad que escapase de nosotros: todas las entregó Jehová nuestro Dios en nuestro poder.
37Solamente á la tierra de los hijos de Ammón no llegaste, ni á todo lo que está á la orilla del arroyo de Jaboc ni á las ciudades del monte, ni á lugar alguno que Jehová nuestro Dios había prohibido.

1Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.
2And the LORD spake unto me, saying,
3Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.
4And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:
5Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.
6Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.
7For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
8And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Ezion-gaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
9And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.
10The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;
11Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emims.
12The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the LORD gave unto them.
13Now rise up, said I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.
14And the space in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them.
15For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.
16So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,
17That the LORD spake unto me, saying,
18Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day:
19And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.
20(That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;
21A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:
22As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:
23And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)
24Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
25This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.
26And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
27Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.
28Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;
29(As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the LORD our God giveth us.
30But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.
31And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.
32Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.
33And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
34And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:
35Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.
36From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us:
37Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORD our God forbad us.
World English Bible
1Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as the LORD spoke to me; and we encircled Mount Seir many days.
2The LORD spoke to me, saying,
3“You have encircled this mountain long enough. Turn northward.
4Command the people, saying, ‘You are to pass through the border of your brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore be careful.
5Don’t contend with them; for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession.
6You shall purchase food from them for money, that you may eat. You shall also buy water from them for money, that you may drink.’”
7For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years, the LORD your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.
8So we passed by from our brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah from Elath and from Ezion Geber. We turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
9The LORD said to me, “Don’t bother Moab, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give you any of his land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the children of Lot for a possession.”
10(The Emim lived there before, a great and numerous people, and tall as the Anakim.
11These also are considered to be Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim.
12The Horites also lived in Seir in the past, but the children of Esau succeeded them. They destroyed them from before them, and lived in their place, as Israel did to the land of his possession, which the LORD gave to them.)
13“Now rise up and cross over the brook Zered.” We went over the brook Zered.
14The days in which we came from Kadesh Barnea until we had come over the brook Zered were thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the middle of the camp, as the LORD swore to them.
15Moreover the LORD’s hand was against them, to destroy them from the middle of the camp, until they were consumed.
16So, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,
17the LORD spoke to me, saying,
18“You are to pass over Ar, the border of Moab, today.
19When you come near the border of the children of Ammon, don’t bother them, nor contend with them; for I will not give you any of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession, because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.”
20(That also is considered a land of Rephaim. Rephaim lived there in the past, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,
21a great people, many, and tall, as the Anakim; but the LORD destroyed them from before Israel, and they succeeded them, and lived in their place,
22as he did for the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them; and they succeeded them, and lived in their place even to this day.
23Then the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza: the Caphtorim, who came out of Caphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.)
24“Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
25Today I will begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole sky, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.”
26I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
27“Let me pass through your land. I will go along by the highway. I will turn neither to the right hand nor to the left.
28You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink. Just let me pass through on my feet,
29as the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, did to me, until I pass over the Jordan into the land which the LORD our God gives us.”
30But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as it is today.
31The LORD said to me, “Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before you. Begin to possess, that you may inherit his land.”
32Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz.
33The LORD our God delivered him up before us; and we struck him, his sons, and all his people.
34We took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones. We left no one remaining.
35Only the livestock we took for plunder for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities which we had taken.
36From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the valley, even to Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. The LORD our God delivered up all before us.
37Only to the land of the children of Ammon you didn’t come near: all the banks of the river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the LORD our God forbade us.
