1Ce sont ici les paroles que Moïse dit à tout Israël, au delà du Jourdain, au désert, dans la campagne, vis-à-vis de Suph, entre Paran et Tophel, et Laban, et Hatséroth, et Di-Zahab.
2Il y a onze journées depuis l'Horeb, par le chemin de la montagne de Séir, jusqu'à Kadès-Barnéa.
3Or, en la quarantième année, au premier jour du onzième mois, Moïse dit aux enfants d'Israël tout ce que l'Éternel lui avait commandé de leur dire;
4Après qu'il eut défait Sihon, roi des Amoréens, qui habitait à Hesbon, et Og, roi de Bassan, qui habitait à Ashtaroth et à Édréi.
5Moïse commença à expliquer cette loi, au delà du Jourdain, dans le pays de Moab, en disant:
6L'Éternel notre Dieu nous parla en Horeb, et nous dit: Vous avez assez demeuré dans cette montagne;
7Tournez-vous et partez, et allez vers la montagne des Amoréens, et dans tous les lieux circonvoisins, dans la campagne, dans la montagne, et dans la plaine, et vers le Midi, et sur la côte de la mer, au pays des Cananéens, et au Liban, jusqu'au grand fleuve, le fleuve d'Euphrate.
8Voyez, j'ai mis devant vous le pays; entrez et possédez le pays que l'Éternel a juré de donner à vos pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, et à leur postérité après eux.
9Et je vous parlai en ce temps là, et je vous dis: Je ne puis vous porter, moi seul.
10L'Éternel votre Dieu vous a multipliés, et vous voici, aujourd'hui, nombreux comme les étoiles du ciel.
11Que l'Éternel, le Dieu de vos pères, vous fasse croître encore mille fois autant, et qu'il vous bénisse comme il vous l'a dit.
12Comment porterais-je moi seul vos peines, vos fardeaux et vos procès?
13Prenez dans vos tribus des hommes sages, intelligents et connus, et je les établirai chefs sur vous.
14Et vous me répondîtes, et dîtes: Il est bon de faire ce que tu as dit.
15Alors je pris les chefs de vos tribus, des hommes sages et connus, et je les établis chefs sur vous, gouverneurs de milliers, de centaines, de cinquantaines et de dizaines, et officiers dans vos tribus.
16Et je commandai à vos juges, en ce temps-là, en disant: Écoutez les différends qui sont entre vos frères, et jugez avec droiture entre l'homme et son frère, et l'étranger qui est avec lui;
17Vous n'aurez point égard à l'apparence de la personne, dans le jugement; vous écouterez le petit comme le grand; vous ne craindrez personne, car le jugement est à Dieu; et vous ferez venir devant moi la cause qui sera trop difficile pour vous, et je l'entendrai.
18Et je vous ordonnai, en ce temps-là, toutes les choses que vous deviez faire.
19Puis, nous partîmes d'Horeb, et nous marchâmes par tout ce grand et affreux désert que vous avez vu, dans la direction de la montagne des Amoréens, ainsi que l'Éternel notre Dieu nous l'avait commandé; et nous vînmes jusqu'à Kadès-Barnéa.
20Alors je vous dis: Vous êtes arrivés jusqu'à la montagne des Amoréens, que l'Éternel notre Dieu nous donne.
21Vois, l'Éternel ton Dieu met devant toi le pays; monte, prends-en possession, comme l'Éternel, le Dieu de tes pères, te l'a dit; ne crains point, et ne t'effraie point.
22Et vous vous approchâtes tous de moi, et vous dîtes: Envoyons devant nous des hommes qui explorent pour nous le pays et nous rendent compte du chemin par lequel nous monterons, et des villes où nous devons aller;
23Et ce discours me plut; et je pris douze hommes d'entre vous, un homme par tribu.
24Et ils se mirent en chemin, et montèrent vers la montagne, et vinrent jusqu'au torrent d'Eshcol, et explorèrent le pays.
25Et ils prirent dans leurs mains du fruit du pays, et nous l'apportèrent; et ils nous rendirent compte, et dirent: Le pays que l'Éternel notre Dieu nous donne, est bon.
26Mais vous ne voulûtes point y monter, et vous fûtes rebelles au commandement de l'Éternel votre Dieu;
27Et vous murmurâtes dans vos tentes, et vous dîtes: C'est parce que l'Éternel nous haïssait, qu'il nous a fait sortir du pays d'Égypte, pour nous livrer entre les mains des Amoréens, pour nous exterminer.
28Où monterions-nous? Nos frères nous ont fait fondre le cœur, en nous disant: C'est un peuple plus grand et de plus haute taille que nous, ce sont des villes grandes et fortifiées jusqu'au ciel, et même nous avons vu là des descendants des Anakim.
29Mais je vous dis: N'ayez point peur, et ne les craignez point.
30L'Éternel votre Dieu, qui marche devant vous, combattra lui-même pour vous, selon tout ce qu'il a fait pour vous, sous vos yeux, en Égypte,
31Et dans le désert; où tu as vu que l'Éternel ton Dieu t'a porté, comme un homme porte son fils, dans tout le chemin que vous avez fait, jusqu'à ce que vous soyez arrivés en ce lieu.
32Mais malgré cela vous n'eûtes point foi en l'Éternel votre Dieu,
33Qui marchait devant vous par le chemin afin de chercher un lieu pour votre camp, la nuit dans la colonne de feu, pour vous montrer le chemin où vous deviez marcher, et le jour, dans la nuée.
34Alors l'Éternel entendit la voix de vos paroles, et se courrouça, et jura, en disant:
35Aucun des hommes de cette méchante génération ne verra ce bon pays que j'ai juré de donner à vos pères,
36Excepté Caleb, fils de Jephunné. Lui, il le verra; et je lui donnerai, à lui et à ses enfants, le pays sur lequel il a marché, parce qu'il a pleinement suivi l'Éternel.
37L'Éternel se mit même en colère contre moi à cause de vous, en disant: Toi non plus, tu n'y entreras pas.
38Josué, fils de Nun, qui te sert, y entrera; encourage-le, car c'est lui qui mettra Israël en possession de ce pays;
39Et vos petits enfants, dont vous avez dit qu'ils y seraient une proie, et vos fils, qui aujourd'hui ne savent ce que c'est que le bien ou le mal, ce sont eux qui y entreront, et je leur donnerai ce pays, et ils le posséderont;
40Mais vous, retournez-vous-en, et partez pour le désert dans la direction de la mer Rouge.
41Alors vous répondîtes, et vous me dîtes: Nous avons péché contre l'Éternel; nous monterons et nous combattrons, selon tout ce que l'Éternel notre Dieu nous a commandé. Et vous ceignîtes chacun vos armes, et vous entreprîtes à la légère de monter vers la montagne.
42Et l'Éternel me dit: Dis-leur: Ne montez point, et ne combattez point, car je ne suis point au milieu de vous; de peur que vous ne soyez battus devant vos ennemis.
43Je vous le rapportai, mais vous ne m'écoutâtes point; et vous fûtes rebelles au commandement de l'Éternel, et, pleins d'orgueil, vous montâtes vers la montagne.
44Alors l'Amoréen, qui demeurait dans cette montagne, sortit à votre rencontre, et vous poursuivit comme font les abeilles, et vous battit en Séir, jusqu'à Horma.
45Et vous revîntes et pleurâtes devant l'Éternel; mais l'Éternel n'écouta point votre voix, et ne vous prêta point l'oreille.
46Et vous demeurâtes à Kadès bien des jours, autant de temps que vous y aviez demeuré.

1ESTAS son las palabras que habló Moisés á todo Israel de esta parte del Jordán en el desierto, en el llano delante del mar Bermejo, entre Parán, y Thopel, y Labán, y Haseroth, y Dizahab.
2Once jornadas hay desde Horeb, camino del monte de Seir, hasta Cades-barnea.
3Y fué, que á los cuarenta años, en el mes undécimo, al primero del mes, Moisés habló á los hijos de Israel conforme á todas las cosas que Jehová le había mandado acerca de ellos;
4Después que hirió á Sehón rey de los Amorrheos, que habitaba en Hesbón, y á Og rey de Basán, que habitaba en Astarot en Edrei:
5De esta parte del Jordán, en tierra de Moab, resolvió Moisés declarar esta ley, diciendo:
6Jehová nuestro Dios nos habló en Horeb, diciendo: Harto habéis estado en este monte;
7Volveos, partíos é id al monte del Amorrheo, y á todas sus comarcas, en el llano, en el monte, y en los valles, y al mediodía, y á la costa de la mar, á la tierra del Cananeo, y el Líbano, hasta el gran río, el río Eufrates.
8Mirad, yo he dado la tierra en vuestra presencia; entrad y poseed la tierra que Jehová juró á vuestros padres Abraham, Isaac, y Jacob, que les daría á ellos y á su simiente después de ellos.
9Y yo os hablé entonces, diciendo: Yo no puedo llevaros solo:
10Jehová vuestro Dios os ha multiplicado, y he aquí sois hoy vosotros como las estrellas del cielo en multitud.
11¡Jehová Dios de vuestros padres añada sobre vosotros como sois mil veces, y os bendiga, como os ha prometido!
12¿Cómo llevaré yo solo vuestras molestias, vuestras cargas, y vuestros pleitos?
13Dadme de entre vosotros, de vuestras tribus, varones sabios y entendidos y expertos, para que yo los ponga por vuestros jefes.
14Y me respondisteis, y dijisteis: Bueno es hacer lo que has dicho.
15Y tomé los principales de vuestras tribus, varones sabios y expertos, y púselos por jefes sobre vosotros, jefes de millares, y jefes de cientos, y jefes de cincuenta, y cabos de diez, y gobernadores á vuestras tribus.
16Y entonces mandé á vuestros jueces, diciendo: Oid entre vuestros hermanos, y juzgad justamente entre el hombre y su hermano, y el que le es extranjero.
17No tengáis respeto de personas en el juicio: así al pequeño como al grande oiréis: no tendréis temor de ninguno, porque el juicio es de Dios: y la causa que os fuere difícil, la traeréis á mí, y yo la oiré.
18Os mandé, pues, en aquel tiempo todo lo que habíais de hacer.
19Y partidos de Horeb, anduvimos todo aquel grande y terrible desierto que habéis visto, por el camino del monte del Amorrheo, como Jehová nuestro Dios nos lo mandó; y llegamos hasta Cades-barnea.
20Entonces os dije: Llegado habéis al monte del Amorrheo, el cual Jehová nuestro Dios nos da.
21Mira, Jehová tu Dios ha dado delante de ti la tierra: sube y poséela, como Jehová el Dios de tus padres te ha dicho; no temas ni desmayes.
22Y llegasteis á mí todos vosotros, y dijisteis: Enviemos varones delante de nosotros, que nos reconozcan la tierra y nos traigan de vuelta razón del camino por donde hemos de subir, y de las ciudades adonde hemos de llegar.
23Y el dicho me pareció bien: y tomé doce varones de vosotros, un varón por tribu:
24Y se encaminaron, y subieron al monte, y llegaron hasta la arroyada de Escol, y reconocieron la tierra.
25Y tomaron en sus manos del fruto del país, y nos lo trajeron, y diéronnos cuenta, y dijeron: Es buena la tierra que Jehová nuestro Dios nos da.
26Empero no quisisteis subir, antes fuisteis rebeldes al dicho de Jehová vuestro Dios;
27Y murmurasteis en vuestras tiendas, diciendo: Porque Jehová nos aborrecía, nos ha sacado de tierra de Egipto, para entregarnos en mano del Amorrheo para destruirnos.
28¿A dónde subimos? Nuestros hermanos han hecho desfallecer nuestro corazón, diciendo: Este pueblo es mayor y más alto que nosotros, las ciudades grandes y muradas hasta el cielo; y también vimos allí hijos de gigantes.
29Entonces os dije: No temáis, ni tengáis miedo de ellos.
30Jehová vuestro Dios, el cual va delante de vosotros, él peleará por vosotros, conforme á todas las cosas que hizo por vosotros en Egipto delante de vuestros ojos;
31Y en el desierto has visto que Jehová tu Dios te ha traído, como trae el hombre á su hijo, por todo el camino que habéis andado, hasta que habéis venido á este lugar.
32Y aun con esto no creisteis en Jehová vuestro Dios,
33El cual iba delante de vosotros por el camino, para reconoceros el lugar donde habíais de asentar el campo, con fuego de noche para mostraros el camino por donde anduvieseis, y con nube de día.
34Y oyó Jehová la voz de vuestras palabras, y enojóse, y juró diciendo:
35No verá hombre alguno de estos de esta mala generación, la buena tierra que juré había de dar á vuestros padres,
36Excepto Caleb hijo de Jephone: él la verá, y á él le daré la tierra que pisó, y á sus hijos; porque cumplió en pos de Jehová.
37Y también contra mí se airó Jehová por vosotros, diciendo: Tampoco tú entrarás allá:
38Josué hijo de Nun, que está delante de ti, él entrará allá: anímale; porque él la hará heredar á Israel.
39Y vuestros chiquitos, de los cuales dijisteis serán por presa, y vuestros hijos que no saben hoy bueno ni malo, ellos entrarán allá, y á ellos la daré, y ellos la heredarán.
40Y vosotros volveos, y partíos al desierto camino del mar Bermejo.
41Entonces respondisteis y me dijisteis: Pecado hemos contra Jehová; nosotros subiremos y pelearemos, conforme á todo lo que Jehová nuestro Dios nos ha mandado. Y os armasteis cada uno de sus armas de guerra, y os apercibisteis para subir al monte.
42Y Jehová me dijo: Diles: No subáis, ni peleéis, pues no estoy entre vosotros; porque no seáis heridos delante de vuestros enemigos.
43Y os hablé, y no disteis oído; antes fuisteis rebeldes al dicho de Jehová, y persistiendo con altivez, subisteis al monte.
44Y salió el Amorrheo, que habitaba en aquel monte, á vuestro encuentro, y os persiguieron, como hacen las avispas, y os derrotaron en Seir, persiguiéndoos hasta Horma.
45Y volvisteis, y llorasteis delante de Jehová; pero Jehová no escuchó vuestra voz, ni os prestó oído.
46Y estuvisteis en Cades por muchos días, como en los días que habéis estado.

1These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
2(There are eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea.)
3And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them;
4After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei:
5On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,
6The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:
7Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.
8Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.
9And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:
10The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.
11(The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!)
12How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?
13Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.
14And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do.
15So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.
16And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
17Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.
18And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.
19And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.
20And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us.
21Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.
22And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.
23And the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe:
24And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.
25And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the LORD our God doth give us.
26Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God:
27And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.
28Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.
29Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.
30The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;
31And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.
32Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God,
33Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.
34And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,
35Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers,
36Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the LORD.
37Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.
38But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.
39Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
40But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
41Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.
42And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.
43So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill.
44And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.
45And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.
46So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.
World English Bible
1These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suf, between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
2It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea.
3In the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel according to all that the LORD had given him in commandment to them,
4after he had struck Sihon the king of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan who lived in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.
5Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to declare this law, saying,
6“The LORD our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying, ‘You have lived long enough at this mountain.
7Turn, and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all the places near there: in the Arabah, in the hill country, in the lowland, in the South, by the seashore, in the land of the Canaanites, and in Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.
8Behold, I have set the land before you. Go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to your fathers—to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob—to give to them and to their offspring after them.’”
9I spoke to you at that time, saying, “I am not able to bear you myself alone.
10The LORD your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as the stars of the sky for multitude.
11May the LORD, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as he has promised you!
12How can I myself alone bear your problems, your burdens, and your strife?
13Take wise men of understanding who are respected among your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.”
14You answered me, and said, “The thing which you have spoken is good to do.”
15So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and respected men, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, captains of hundreds, captains of fifties, captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.
16I commanded your judges at that time, saying, “Hear cases between your brothers and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the foreigner who is living with him.
17You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.”
18I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.
19We traveled from Horeb and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw, by the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh Barnea.
20I said to you, “You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the LORD our God gives to us.
21Behold, the LORD your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as the LORD the God of your fathers has spoken to you. Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed.”
22You came near to me, everyone of you, and said, “Let’s send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring back to us word of the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come.”
23The thing pleased me well. I took twelve of your men, one man for every tribe.
24They turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.
25They took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said, “It is a good land which the LORD our God gives to us.”
26Yet you wouldn’t go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God.
27You murmured in your tents, and said, “Because the LORD hated us, he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.
28Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our heart melt, saying, ‘The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to the sky. Moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there!’”
29Then I said to you, “Don’t be terrified. Don’t be afraid of them.
30The LORD your God, who goes before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,
31and in the wilderness where you have seen how that the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went, until you came to this place.”
32Yet in this thing you didn’t believe the LORD your God,
33who went before you on the way, to seek out a place for you to pitch your tents in: in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in the cloud by day.
34The LORD heard the voice of your words and was angry, and swore, saying,
35“Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land which I swore to give to your fathers,
36except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it. I will give the land that he has trodden on to him and to his children, because he has wholly followed the LORD.”
37Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, “You also shall not go in there.

41Then you answered and said to me, “We have sinned against the LORD. We will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us.” Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into the hill country.
42The LORD said to me, “Tell them, ‘Don’t go up and don’t fight; for I am not among you, lest you be struck before your enemies.’”
43So I spoke to you, and you didn’t listen; but you rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill country.
44The Amorites, who lived in that hill country, came out against you and chased you as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah.
45You returned and wept before the LORD, but the LORD didn’t listen to your voice, nor turn his ear to you.
46So you stayed in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you remained.
