1La troisième année du règne de Jéhojakim, roi de Juda, Nébucadnézar, roi de Babel, arriva devant Jérusalem, et l'assiégea.
2Et le Seigneur mit entre ses mains Jéhojakim, roi de Juda, et une partie des meubles de la maison de Dieu ; et il les amena au pays de Sinear, à la maison de son dieu ; et il fit entrer les meubles dans le Trésor de son dieu.
3Et le roi ordonna à Aspenas, chef de ses eunuques, d'amener des enfants d'Israël et de race royale et de noble extraction,
4des jeunes garçons sans défaut et sans tache, beaux de figure, et versés dans toute la sagesse, et connaissant la science, et doués d'instruction, qui fussent propres à faire le service dans le palais du roi, et à apprendre la langue et les lettres des Chaldéens.
5Et le roi leur assigna un ordinaire quotidien sur les mets délicats du roi et sur le vin qu'il buvait, et fixa pour leur éducation trois années au bout desquelles ils entreraient au service de la personne du roi.
6Et de ce nombre il y avait de la race de Juda Daniel, Hananias, Misaël et Azarias.
7Et le chef des eunuques leur donna des noms, et donna à Daniel le nom de Beltsazar, et à Hananias celui de Sadrach, et à Misaël celui de Mésach, et à Azarias celui de Abednégo.
8Or, Daniel prit la résolution de ne pas contracter la souillure des mets délicats du roi ni du vin qu'il buvait, et il sollicita du chef des eunuques la permission de ne pas se souiller.
9Et Dieu mit Daniel en faveur et en grâce auprès du chef des eunuques ;
10et le chef des eunuques dit à Daniel : Je crains le roi, mon maître, qui lui-même a fixé ce que vous mangerez et boirez ; car pourquoi vous verrait-il un visage plus défait qu'aux enfants de votre âge ? Ainsi, vous exposeriez ma tête auprès du roi.
11Alors Daniel s'adressa au maître d'hôtel auquel le chef des eunuques avait commis Daniel, Hananias, Misaël et Azarias :
12Fais donc un essai de dix jours sur tes serviteurs, et qu'on nous donne des légumes pour nourriture, et de l'eau pour boisson.
13Puis tu examineras notre visage et le visage des enfants nourris des mets délicats du roi ; et traite alors tes serviteurs d'après ce que tu auras vu.
14Et il leur déféra en cela, et fit sur eux un essai de dix jours.
15Et au bout de dix jours on leur vit meilleur visage et plus d'embonpoint qu'à tous les enfants nourris des mets délicats du roi.
16Alors le maître d'hôtel supprima leurs mets délicats, et le vin qu'ils avaient pour boisson, et leur servit des légumes.
17Et à ces jeunes gens, aux quatre, Dieu accorda la connaissance et l'intelligence de toutes les lettres, et de toute la sagesse ; et Daniel avait l'entente de toutes les visions et des songes.
18Et après l'expiration du temps fixé par le roi pour leur admission, le chef des eunuques les amena et les présenta à Nébucadnézar.
19Et le roi s'entretint avec eux, et entre eux tous aucun ne fut trouvé égal à Daniel, à Hananias, à Misaël et à Azarias ; ils furent donc placés auprès de la personne du roi.
20Et sur tous les points de sagesse et d'intelligence sur lesquels le roi les interrogeait, il les trouvait dix fois supérieurs à tous les devins et enchanteurs qui étaient dans tout son empire.
21Ainsi fut Daniel jusqu'à la première année du roi Coresch.

1EN el año tercero del reinado de Joacim rey de Judá, vino Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia á Jerusalem, y cercóla.
2Y el Señor entregó en sus manos á Joacim rey de Judá, y parte de los vasos de la casa de Dios, y trájolos á tierra de Sinar, á la casa de su dios: y metió los vasos en la casa del tesoro de su dios.
3Y dijo el rey á Aspenaz, príncipe de sus eunucos, que trajese de los hijos de Israel, del linaje real de los príncipes,
4Muchachos en quienes no hubiese tacha alguna, y de buen parecer, y enseñados en toda sabiduría, y sabios en ciencia, y de buen entendimiento, é idóneos para estar en el palacio del rey; y que les enseñase las letras y la lengua de los Caldeos.
5Y señalóles el rey ración para cada día de la ración de la comida del rey, y del vino de su beber: que los criase tres años, para que al fin de ellos estuviesen delante del rey.
6Y fueron entre ellos, de los hijos de Judá, Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías:
7A los cuales el príncipe de los eunucos puso nombres: y puso á Daniel, Beltsasar; y á Ananías, Sadrach; y á Misael, Mesach; y á Azarías, Abed-nego.
8Y Daniel propuso en su corazón de no contaminarse en la ración de la comida del rey, ni en el vino de su beber: pidió por tanto al príncipe de los eunucos de no contaminarse.
9(Y puso Dios á Daniel en gracia y en buena voluntad con el príncipe de los eunucos.)
10Y dijo el príncipe de los eunucos á Daniel: Tengo temor de mi señor el rey, que señaló vuestra comida y vuestra bebida; pues luego que él habrá visto vuestros rostros más tristes que los de los muchachos que son semejantes á vosotros, condenaréis para con el rey mi cabeza.
11Entonces dijo Daniel á Melsar, que estaba puesto por el príncipe de los eunucos sobre Daniel, Ananías, Misael, y Azarías:
12Prueba, te ruego, tus siervos diez días, y dennos legumbres á comer, y agua á beber.
13Parezcan luego delante de ti nuestros rostros, y los rostros de los muchachos que comen de la ración de la comida del rey; y según que vieres, harás con tus siervos.
14Consintió pues con ellos en esto, y probó con ellos diez días.
15Y al cabo de los diez días pareció el rostro de ellos mejor y más nutrido de carne, que los otros muchachos que comían de la ración de la comida del rey.
16Así fué que Melsar tomaba la ración de la comida de ellos, y el vino de su beber, y dábales legumbres.
17Y á estos cuatro muchachos dióles Dios conocimiento é inteligencia en todas letras y ciencia: mas Daniel tuvo entendimiento en toda visión y sueños.
18Pasados pues los días al fin de los cuales había dicho el rey que los trajesen, el príncipe de los eunucos los trajo delante de Nabucodonosor.
19Y el rey habló con ellos, y no fué hallado entre todos ellos otro como Daniel, Ananías, Misael, y Azarías: y así estuvieron delante del rey.
20Y en todo negocio de sabiduría é inteligencia que el rey les demandó, hallólos diez veces mejores que todos los magos y astrólogos que había en todo su reino.
21Y fué Daniel hasta el año primero del rey Ciro.

1In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
4Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
7Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.
8But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
10And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
11Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
14So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.
16Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
17As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
20And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
21And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

1In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
2The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god. He brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3The king spoke to Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in some of the children of Israel, even of the royal offspring and of the nobles:
4youths in whom was no defect, but well-favored, skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding science, and who had the ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.
5The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s delicacies and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years, that at its end they should stand before the king.
6Now among these of the children of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
7The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.
8But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank. Therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9Now God made Daniel find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.
10The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink. For why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? Then you would endanger my head with the king.”
11Then Daniel said to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
12“Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.
13Then let our faces be examined before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s delicacies; and as you see, deal with your servants.”
14So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days.
15At the end of ten days, their faces appeared fairer and they were fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate of the king’s delicacies.
16So the steward took away their delicacies and the wine that they were given to drink, and gave them vegetables.
17Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18At the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19The king talked with them; and among them all was found no one like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore they stood before the king.
20In every matter of wisdom and understanding concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters who were in all his realm.
21Daniel continued even to the first year of King Cyrus.
