1Le grand prêtre dit : " En est-il bien ainsi? "
2Lui répondit : " Frères et pères, écoutez. Le Dieu de gloire apparut à notre père Abraham, lorsqu`il était en Mésopotamie, avant qu`il demeurât à Harran,
3et il lui dit : Quitte ton pays et ta famille, et va dans le pays que je te montrerai.
4Alors il quitta le pays des Chaldéens et demeura à Harran. De là, après la mort de son père, (Dieu) le fit émigrer dans ce pays où vous-mêmes demeurez maintenant.
5Et il ne lui donna aucun lot, dans ce (pays), pas même une enjambée, mais il lui promit de le lui donner en possession, et à sa postérité après lui, bien qu`il fût sans enfant.
6Dieu parla ainsi : Sa postérité séjournera en pays étranger; on l`asservira et on la maltraitera pendant quatre cents ans;
7mais la nation à laquelle ils seront asservis, c`est moi qui la jugerai, dit Dieu, et après cela ils sortiront et ils m`adoreront en ce lieu.
8Et (Dieu) lui donna l`alliance de la circoncision; et ainsi (Abraham), après avoir engendré Isaac, le circoncit le huitième jour; puis Isaac engendra et circoncit Jacob, et Jacob les douze patriarches.
9Et les patriarches, jalousant Joseph (le) vendirent pour l`Egypte; mais Dieu était avec lui,
10et il le tira de toutes ses épreuves, et lui donna grâce et sagesse devant Pharaon, roi d`Egypte, qui le mit à la tête de l`Egypte et de toute sa maison.
11Or il survint une famine dans tout le pays d`Egypte et en Canaan, et une grande détresse, et nos pères ne trouvaient pas de nourriture.
12Mais Jacob, ayant appris qu`il y avait des vivres en Egypte, (y) envoya nos pères une première fois.
13Et la seconde fois, Joseph fut reconnu par ses frères, et Pharaon connut quelle était son origine.
14Et Joseph envoya chercher Jacob, son père et toute la famille, (composée) de soixante-quinze personnes.
15Et Jacob descendit en Egypte, et il mourut, ainsi que nos pères.
16Et ils furent transportés à Sichem et déposés dans le sépulcre qu`Abraham avait acheté à prix d`argent des fils d`Hémor, à Sichem.
17Comme le temps approchait où devait s`accomplir la promesse que Dieu avait faite à Abraham, le peuple s`accrut et se multiplia en Egypte,
18jusqu`à ce que se leva sur l`Egypte un autre roi qui ne connaissait pas Joseph.
19Ce (roi), usant de ruse envers notre race, maltraita (nos) pères en leur faisant exposer leurs enfants, afin qu`ils ne vécussent pas.
20A cette époque naquit Moïse, qui était beau pour Dieu; il fut nourri trois mois dans la maison de (son) père
21et, quand il eut été exposé, la fille de Pharaon le recueillit et l`éleva comme son fils.
22Moïse fut instruit dans toute la sagesse des Egyptiens, et il était puissant en ses paroles et en ses œuvres.
23Mais quand il eut atteint l`âge de quarante ans, il lui vint dans l`esprit de visiter ses frères, les enfants d`Israël.
24Et en ayant vu un qu`on maltraitait, il prit sa défense et vengea l`opprimé en frappant l`Egyptien.
25Or il pensait que ses frères comprendraient que Dieu leur donnait le salut par sa main; mais ils ne comprirent pas.
26Le jour suivant, il se montra devant (deux) qui se battaient, et il tentait de les mettre en paix disant : " Hommes, vous êtes frères : pourquoi vous maltraiter l`un l`autre? "
27Mais celui qui maltraitait son congénère le repoussa, disant : Qui t`a établi chef et juge sur nous?
28Veux-tu me tuer, comme tu as tué hier l`Egyptien?
29A cette parole, Moïse s`enfuit, et il alla séjourner au pays de Madian, où il engendra deux fils.
30Quarante ans s`étant écoulés, un ange lui apparut, au désert du mont Sinaï, dans la flamme d`un buisson en feu.
31A cette vue, Moïse était étonné de l`apparition et comme il s`approchait pour regarder, la voix du Seigneur se fit (entendre) :
32Je suis le Dieu de tes pères, le Dieu d`Abraham, d`Isaac et de Jacob. Mais, devenu tremblant, Moïse n`osait regarder.
33Et le seigneur lui dit : Ote la chaussure de tes pieds, car le lieu où tu te tiens est une terre sainte.
34J`ai vu l`affliction de mon peuple qui est en Egypte, j`ai entendu leur gémissement, et je suis descendu pour les délivrer. Et maintenant viens, que je t`envoie en Egypte.
35Ce Moïse qu`ils avaient renié en disant : Qui t`a établi chef et juge? c`est lui que Dieu a envoyé comme chef et rédempteur, avec l`assistance de l`ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson.
36C`est lui qui les fit sortir en opérant des prodiges et des miracles dans la terre d`Egypte, dans la mer Rouge et au désert pendant quarante ans.
37C`est ce Moïse qui dit aux enfants d`Israël : Dieu vous suscitera d`entre vos frères un prophète comme moi.
38C`est lui qui, dans l`assemblée, au désert, fut avec l`ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sinaï et avec nos pères; qui reçut des paroles de vie pour vous les donner;
39à qui nos pères ne voulurent pas obéir, mais qu`ils repoussèrent, tandis que, retournés de cœur vers l`Egypte,
40ils dirent à Aaron : Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous, car ce Moïse, qui nous a fait sortir du pays d`Egypte, nous ne savons ce qui lui est arrivé.
41Ils fabriquèrent en ces jours-là un veau (d`or), et ils offrirent un sacrifice à l`idole, et ils se réjouissaient des œuvres de leurs mains.
42Mais Dieu se détourna et les livra au culte de l`armée du ciel, selon qu`il est écrit au livre des Prophètes : M`avez-vous offert des victimes et des sacrifices pendant quarante ans au désert, maison d`Israël?
43Vous avez porté la tente de Moloch et l`astre de votre dieu Réphan, les images que vous avez faites pour les adorer ! Aussi je vous transporterai par delà Babylone.
44Nos pères dans le désert avaient le tabernacle du témoignage, comme l`avait ordonné celui qui dit à Moïse de le faire selon le modèle qu`il avait vu.
45L`ayant reçu, nos pères l`amenèrent aussi, avec Josué, lorsqu`ils firent la conquête sur les nations que Dieu chassa de devant nos pères, (et ils le gardèrent) jusqu`aux jours de David.
46Celui-ci trouva grâce devant Dieu, et il demanda de trouver une demeure pour le Dieu de Jacob.
47Néanmoins ce fut Salomon qui lui bâtit une maison.
48Mais le Très-Haut n`habite pas dans ce qui est fait de main d`homme, comme dit le prophète :
49Le ciel est mon trône, et la terre l`escabeau de mes pieds. Quelle maison me bâtirez-vous, dit le Seigneur, ou quel sera mon lieu de repos?
50N`est-ce pas ma main qui a fait toutes ces choses?
51(Hommes) au cou raide, incirconcis de cœur et d`oreille, vous résistez toujours à l`Esprit-Saint : tels vos pères, tels vous-mêmes.
52Lequel des prophètes vos pères n`ont-ils pas persécuté? Ils ont même tué ceux qui prédisaient la venue du Juste, envers lequel maintenant vous êtes devenus traîtres et meurtriers,
53(vous) qui avez reçu la Loi par le ministère des anges, et ne l`avez pas gardée ! "
54En entendant ces paroles, ils avaient le cœur exaspéré, et ils grinçaient des dents contre lui.
55Mais (Etienne), qui était rempli de l`Esprit-Saint, ayant fixé les yeux au ciel, vit la gloire de Dieu et Jésus debout à la droite de Dieu,
56et il dit : " Voici que je vois les cieux ouverts et le Fils de l`homme debout à la droite de Dieu. "
57Ils poussèrent de grands cris, se bouchèrent les oreilles et se jetèrent tous ensemble sur lui;
58et après l`avoir entraîné hors de la ville, ils le lapidèrent. Les témoins déposèrent leurs vêtements aux pieds d`un jeune homme nommé Saul.
59Pendant qu`ils lapidaient Etienne, il priait disant : " Seigneur Jésus, recevez mon esprit ! "
60S`étant mis à genoux, il s`écria d`une voix forte : " Seigneur, ne leur imputez pas ce péché ! " Et, cela dit, il mourut.

1EL príncipe de los sacerdotes dijo entonces: ¿Es esto así?
2Y él dijo: Varones hermanos y padres, oid: El Dios de la gloria apareció á nuestro padre Abraham, estando en Mesopotamia, antes que morase en Chârán,
3Y le dijo: Sal de tu tierra y de tu parentela, y ven á la tierra que te mostraré.
4Entonces salió de la tierra de los Caldeos, y habitó en Chârán: y de allí, muerto su padre, le traspasó á esta tierra, en la cual vosotros habitáis ahora;
5Y no le dió herencia en ella, ni aun para asentar un pie: mas le prometió que se la daría en posesión, y á su simiente después de él, no teniendo hijo.
6Y hablóle Dios así: Que su simiente sería extranjera en tierra ajena, y que los reducirían á servidumbre y maltratarían, por cuatrocientos años.
7Mas yo juzgaré, dijo Dios, la nación á la cual serán siervos: y después de esto saldrán y me servirán en este lugar.
8Y dióle el pacto de la circuncisión: y así Abraham engendró á Isaac, y le circuncidó al octavo día; é Isaac á Jacob, y Jacob á los doce patriarcas.
9Y los patriarcas, movidos de envidia, vendieron á José para Egipto; mas Dios era con él,
10Y le libró de todas sus tribulaciones, y le dió gracia y sabiduría en la presencia de Faraón, rey de Egipto, el cual le puso por gobernador sobre Egipto, y sobre toda su casa.
11Vino entonces hambre en toda la tierra de Egipto y de Canaán, y grande tribulación; y nuestros padres no hallaban alimentos.
12Y como oyese Jacob que había trigo en Egipto, envió á nuestros padres la primera vez.
13Y en la segunda, José fué conocido de sus hermanos, y fué sabido de Faraón el linaje de José.
14Y enviando José, hizo venir á su padre Jacob, y á toda su parentela, en número de setenta y cinco personas.
15Así descendió Jacob á Egipto, donde murió él y nuestros padres;
16Los cuales fueron trasladados á Sichêm, y puestos en el sepulcro que compró Abraham á precio de dinero de los hijos de Hemor de Sichêm.
17Mas como se acercaba el tiempo de la promesa, la cual Dios había jurado á Abraham, el pueblo creció y multiplicóse en Egipto,
18Hasta que se levantó otro rey en Egipto que no conocía á José.
19Este, usando de astucia con nuestro linaje, maltrató á nuestros padres, á fin de que pusiesen á peligro de muerte sus niños, para que cesase la generación.
20En aquel mismo tiempo nació Moisés, y fué agradable á Dios: y fué criado tres meses en casa de su padre.
21Mas siendo puesto al peligro, la hija de Faraón le tomó, y le crió como á hijo suyo.
22Y fué enseñado Moisés en toda la sabiduría de los egipcios; y era poderoso en sus dichos y hechos.
23Y cuando hubo cumplido la edad de cuarenta años, le vino voluntad de visitar á sus hermanos los hijos de Israel.
24Y como vió á uno que era injuriado, defendióle, é hiriendo al Egipcio, vengó al injuriado.
25Pero él pensaba que sus hermanos entendían que Dios les había de dar salud por su mano; mas ellos no lo habían entendido.
26Y al día siguiente, riñendo ellos, se les mostró, y los ponía en paz, diciendo: Varones, hermanos sois, ¿por qué os injuriáis los unos á los otros?
27Entonces el que injuriaba á su prójimo, le rempujó, diciendo: ¿Quién te ha puesto por príncipe y juez sobre nosotros?
28¿Quieres tú matarme, como mataste ayer al Egipcio?
29A esta palabra Moisés huyó, y se hizo extranjero en tierra de Madián, donde engendró dos hijos.
30Y cumplidos cuarenta años, un ángel le apareció en el desierto del monte Sina, en fuego de llama de una zarza.
31Entonces Moisés mirando, se maravilló de la visión: y llegándose para considerar, fué hecha á él voz del Señor:
32Yo soy el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abraham, y el Dios de Isaac, y el Dios de Jacob. Mas Moisés, temeroso, no osaba mirar.
33Y le dijo el Señor: Quita los zapatos de tus pies, porque el lugar en que estás es tierra santa.
34He visto, he visto la aflicción de mi pueblo que está en Egipto, y he oído el gemido de ellos, y he descendido para librarlos. Ahora pues, ven, te enviaré á Egipto.
35A este Moisés, al cual habían rehusado, diciendo: ¿Quién te ha puesto por príncipe y juez? á éste envió Dios por príncipe y redentor con la mano del ángel que le apareció en la zarza.
36Este los sacó, habiendo hecho prodigios y milagros en la tierra de Egipto, y en el mar Bermejo, y en el desierto por cuarenta años.
37Este es el Moisés, el cual dijo á los hijos de Israel: Profeta os levantará el Señor Dios vuestro de vuestros hermanos, como yo; á él oiréis.
38Este es aquél que estuvo en la congregación en el desierto con el ángel que le hablaba en el monte Sina, y con nuestros padres; y recibió las palabras de vida para darnos:
39Al cual nuestros padres no quisieron obedecer; antes le desecharon, y se apartaron de corazón á Egipto,
40Diciendo á Aarón: Haznos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros; porque á este Moisés, que nos sacó de tierra de Egipto, no sabemos qué le ha acontecido.
41Y entonces hicieron un becerro, y ofrecieron sacrificio al ídolo, y en las obras de sus manos se holgaron.
42Y Dios se apartó, y los entregó que sirviesen al ejército del cielo; como está escrito en el libro de los profetas: ¿Me ofrecisteis víctimas y sacrificios en el desierto por cuarenta años, casa de Israel?
43Antes, trajisteis el tabernáculo de Moloch, y la estrella de vuestro dios Remphan: figuras que os hicisteis para adorarlas: os transportaré pues, más allá de Babilonia.
44Tuvieron nuestros padres el tabernáculo del testimonio en el desierto, como había ordenado Dios, hablando á Moisés que lo hiciese según la forma que había visto.
45El cual recibido, metieron también nuestros padres con Josué en la posesión de los Gentiles, que Dios echó de la presencia de nuestros padres, hasta los días de David;
46El cual halló gracia delante de Dios, y pidió hallar tabernáculo para el Dios de Jacob.
47Mas Salomón le edificó casa.
48Si bien el Altísimo no habita en templos hechos de mano; como el profeta dice:
49El cielo es mi trono, y la tierra es el estrado de mis pies. ¿Qué casa me edificaréis? dice el Señor; ¿ó cuál es el lugar de mi reposo?
50¿No hizo mi mano todas estas cosas?
51Duros de cerviz, é incircuncisos de corazón y de oídos, vosotros resistís siempre al Espíritu Santo: como vuestros padres, así también vosotros.
52¿A cuál de los profetas no persiguieron vuestros padres? y mataron á los que antes anunciaron la venida del Justo, del cual vosotros ahora habéis sido entregadores y matadores;
53Que recibisteis la ley por disposición de ángeles, y no la guardasteis.
54Y oyendo estas cosas, regañaban de sus corazones, y crujían los dientes contra él.
55Mas él, estando lleno de Espíritu Santo, puestos los ojos en el cielo, vió la gloria de Dios, y á Jesús que estaba á la diestra de Dios,
56Y dijo: He aquí, veo los cielos abiertos, y al Hijo del hombre que está á la diestra de Dios.
57Entonces dando grandes voces, se taparon sus oídos, y arremetieron unánimes contra él;
58Y echándolo fuera de la ciudad, le apedreaban: y los testigos pusieron sus vestidos á los pies de un mancebo que se llamaba Saulo.
59Y apedrearon á Esteban, invocando él y diciendo: Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu.
60Y puesto de rodillas, clamó á gran voz: Señor, no les imputes este pecado. Y habiendo dicho esto, durmió.

1Then said the high priest, Are these things so?
2And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
3And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
4Then came he out of the land of the Chaldæans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.
5And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
6And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.
7And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.
8And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.
9And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
10And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
11Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.
12But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.
13And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph’s kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.
14Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.
15So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,
16And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.
17But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
18Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.
19The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.
20In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father’s house three months:
21And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
22And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
23And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
24And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:
25For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.
26And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
27But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?
28Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?
29Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.
30And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.
31When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,
32Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.
33Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
34I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
35This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.
36He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
37This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.
38This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:
39To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,
40Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
41And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
42Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?
43Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
44Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.
45Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;
46Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
47But Solomon built him an house.
48Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
49Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
50Hath not my hand made all these things?
51Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
52Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
53Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
54When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.
55But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
57Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,
58And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.
59And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
60And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

1The high priest said, “Are these things so?”
2He said, “Brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,
3and said to him, ‘Get out of your land and away from your relatives, and come into a land which I will show you.’
4Then he came out of the land of the Chaldaeans and lived in Haran. From there, when his father was dead, God moved him into this land where you are now living.
5He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his offspring after him, when he still had no child.
6God spoke in this way: that his offspring would live as aliens in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.
7‘I will judge the nation to which they will be in bondage,’ said God, ‘and after that they will come out and serve me in this place.’
8He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.
9“The patriarchs, moved with jealousy against Joseph, sold him into Egypt. God was with him
10and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. He made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
11Now a famine came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction. Our fathers found no food.
12But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers the first time.
13On the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family was revealed to Pharaoh.
14Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his relatives, seventy-five souls.
15Jacob went down into Egypt and he died, himself and our fathers;
16and they were brought back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in silver from the children of Hamor of Shechem.
17“But as the time of the promise came close which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
18until there arose a different king who didn’t know Joseph.
19The same took advantage of our race and mistreated our fathers, and forced them to abandon their babies, so that they wouldn’t stay alive.
20At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome to God. He was nourished three months in his father’s house.
21When he was abandoned, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up and reared him as her own son.
22Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. He was mighty in his words and works.
23But when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
24Seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him and avenged him who was oppressed, striking the Egyptian.
25He supposed that his brothers understood that God, by his hand, was giving them deliverance; but they didn’t understand.
26“The day following, he appeared to them as they fought, and urged them to be at peace again, saying, ‘Sirs, you are brothers. Why do you wrong one another?’
27But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?
28Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’
29Moses fled at this saying, and became a stranger in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.
30“When forty years were fulfilled, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.
31When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight. As he came close to see, the voice of the Lord came to him,
32‘I am the God of your fathers: the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ Moses trembled and dared not look.
33The Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you stand is holy ground.
34I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning. I have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you into Egypt.’
35“This Moses whom they refused, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—God has sent him as both a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
36This man led them out, having worked wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.
37This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, ‘The Lord our God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me.’
38This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received living revelations to give to us,
39to whom our fathers wouldn’t be obedient, but rejected him and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,
40saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’
41They made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.
42But God turned away and gave them up to serve the army of the sky, as it is written in the book of the prophets, ‘Did you offer to me slain animals and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
43You took up the tabernacle of Moloch, the star of your god Rephan, the figures which you made to worship, so I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’
44“Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to make it according to the pattern that he had seen;
45which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered into the possession of the nations whom God drove out before the face of our fathers to the days of David,
46who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.
47But Solomon built him a house.
48However, the Most High doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says,
49‘heaven is my throne, and the earth a footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build me?’ says the Lord. ‘Or what is the place of my rest?
50Didn’t my hand make all these things?’
51“You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.
52Which of the prophets didn’t your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.
53You received the law as it was ordained by angels, and didn’t keep it!”
54Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.
55But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56and said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
57But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears, then rushed at him with one accord.
58They threw him out of the city and stoned him. The witnesses placed their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
59They stoned Stephen as he called out, saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”
60He kneeled down and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, don’t hold this sin against them!” When he had said this, he fell asleep.
