1In Cäsarea lebte ein Mann namens Kornelius, Hauptmann in der so genannten Italischen Kohorte.
2Er war samt seinem ganzen Hause fromm und gottesfürchtig, gab dem Volke reichlich Almosen und betete unablässig zu Gott.
3Es war um die neunte Tagesstunde, da sah er ganz deutlich in einem Gesichte, wie ein Engel Gottes zu ihm hereinkam und zu ihm sprach: "Kornelius!"
4Er aber schaute ihn starr an und fragte voll Furcht: "Was, o Herr?" Er antwortete ihm: "Deine Gebete und deine Almosen sind emporgestiegen zu Gott als Gedächtnisopfer.
5Doch jetzt sende Männer nach Joppe und laß den Simon holen, der auch Petrus heißt.
6Er ist zu Gast bei einem Gerber namens Simon, der am Meer ein Haus besitzt" Der wird dir sagen, was du tun sollst.
7Der Engel, der mit ihm geredet hatte, verschwand. Er rief zwei seiner Sklaven und einen gottesfürchtigen Soldaten aus seiner ständigen Umgebung,
8setzte ihnen alles auseinander und schickte sie nach Joppe.
9Am anderen Tag, während jene noch unterwegs waren und sich der Stadt näherten, stieg Petrus auf das Dach, um zu beten. Es war um die sechste Stunde.
10Er war hungrig und wünschte zu essen. Während man zurichtete, kam über ihn eine Verzückung:
11Er schaute den Himmel offen und ein Behältnis wie ein großes Linnentuch herabkommen, das an den vier Enden auf die Erde herabgelassen wurde.
12In ihm befanden sich alle vierfüßigen und kriechenden Tiere der Erde und Vögel des Himmels.
13Eine Stimme rief ihm zu: "Steh auf, Petrus, schlachte und iß!"
14Petrus erwiderte: "Nein, Herr! Noch nie habe ich etwas Gemeines und Unreines gegessen."
15Zum zweitenmal rief es ihm zu: "Was Gott gereinigt hat, sollst du nicht gemein heißen."
16Das geschah dreimal. Gleich darauf wurde das Behältnis wieder in den Himmel emporgehoben
17Während Petrus noch überlegte, was das Gesicht, das er gesehen hatte, zu bedeuten habe, standen die Leute, die Kornelius abgesandt und die sich zum Hause des Simon bereits durchgefragt hatten, am Tore.
18Sie riefen und fragten, ob hier ein Simon mit dem Beinamen Petrus wohne.
19Petrus dachte immer noch über das Gesicht nach. Da sprach der Geist zu ihm: "Drei Männer suchen dich.
20Steh auf und geh hinab und zieh mit ihnen ohne irgendein Bedenken; denn ich habe sie gesandt."
21Da ging Petrus zu den Leuten hinunter und sprach zu ihnen: "Ich bin es, den ihr suchet. Was führt euch hierher?"
22Sie antworteten ihm: "Kornelius, der Hauptmann, ein rechtlicher und gottesfürchtiger Mann, der bei der ganzen jüdischen Bevölkerung in gutem Rufe steht, ward von einem heiligen Engel angewiesen, dich in sein Haus zu holen und von dir Belehrung zu empfangen."
23Da lud er sie ein und beherbergte sie. Am folgenden Tage machte er sich auf und zog mit ihnen fort; einige der Brüder aus Joppe begleiteten ihn.
24Am anderen Tag langte er in Cäsarea an. Kornelius erwartete sie und hatte seine Verwandten und vertrauten Freunde eingeladen.
25Als Petrus eintrat, ging ihm Kornelius entgegen, fiel ihm zu Füßen und begrüßte ihn.
26Petrus aber hob ihn auf und sprach: "Steh auf! Auch ich bin nur ein Mensch."
27Im Gespräch mit ihm trat er ein und fand viele Leute versammelt.
28Da sprach er zu ihnen: "Ihr wisset wohl, daß es einem Juden nicht erlaubt ist, mit einem Nichtjuden näher zu verkehren oder zu ihm zu gehen. Doch mir hat Gott gezeigt, daß man keinen Menschen gemein und unrein nennen darf.
29Ich bin deshalb ohne irgendein Bedenken mitgegangen, als ihr mich rufen ließet. Ich möchte aber doch nun wissen, warum ihr mich habt rufen lassen."
30Kornelius erwiderte: "Gerade vor vier Tagen, auf die Stunde hin, da betete ich in meinem Hause um die neunte Stunde. Und siehe, da stand ein Mann vor mir in glänzend weißem Kleide
31und sprach: 'Kornelius! Dein Gebet ist erhört und deiner Almosen ward vor Gott gedacht.
32Schick hin nach Joppe und laß Simon rufen, der auch Petrus heißt; er weilt als Gast im Hause des Gerbers Simon dicht am Meer.'
33Und sogleich sandte ich zu dir, und du hast recht getan, daß du gekommen bist. Jetzt sind wir alle hier vor Gott versammelt, um zu hören, was dir vom Herrn aufgetragen ist."
34Da tat Petrus seinen Mund auf und sprach: "Nunmehr begreife ich in Wahrheit, daß Gott nicht auf die Person sieht,
35daß ihm vielmehr in jedem Volke der angenehm ist, der ihn fürchtet und Gerechtigkeit übt.
36Das Wort hat er den Kindern Israels gesandt, indem er Frieden verkündigte durch Jesus Christus; dieser ist der Herr aller.
37Ihr kennt die Begebenheiten, die sich im ganzen Judenland zugetragen haben: In Galiläa fing er an nach der Taufe, die Johannes verkündete;
38ich meine Jesus von Nazareth, den Gott mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Wunderkraft gesalbt hat, der dann umhergezogen ist, Wohltaten spendete und alle vom Teufel Besessenen geheilt hat; Gott war ja mit ihm.
39Wir sind von all dem Zeugen, was er im Judenland und in Jerusalem gewirkt hat. Man hat ihn zwar getötet, indem man ihn ans Holz gehängt hat.
40Gott aber hat ihn am dritten Tag auferweckt und sichtbar werden lassen,
41zwar nicht dem ganzen Volke, doch den von Gott vorbestimmten Zeugen, uns, die wir nach seiner Auferstehung von den Toten mit ihm zusammen gesessen und getrunken haben.
42Er hat uns aufgetragen, dem Volke zu verkünden und zu bezeugen, daß er der von Gott bestellte Richter über Lebendige und Tote ist.
43Von ihm bezeugen alle Propheten, daß jeder, der an ihn glaubt, durch seinen Namen Nachlaß der Sünden empfangen wird."
44Während Petrus noch so redete, kam der Heilige Geist auf alle herab, die die Predigt hörten.
45Die Gläubigen aus der Beschneidung, die mit Petrus gekommen waren, wunderten sich, daß auch über die Heiden die Gabe des Heiligen Geistes ausgegossen wurde;
46denn sie hörten, wie sie in Sprachen redeten und Gott lobpriesen. Da sprach Petrus:
47"Kann man das Wasser der Taufe denen versagen, die gleich uns den Heiligen Geist empfangen haben?"
48So ließ er sie denn im Namen Jesu Christi taufen. Hierauf baten sie ihn, noch einige Tage dazubleiben.

1Y HABÍA un varón en Cesarea llamado Cornelio, centurión de la compañía que se llamaba la Italiana,
2Pío y temeroso de Dios con toda su casa, y que hacía muchas limosnas al pueblo, y oraba á Dios siempre.
3Este vió en visión manifiestamente, como á la hora nona del día, que un ángel de Dios entraba á él, y le decía: Cornelio.
4Y él, puestos en él los ojos, espantado, dijo: ¿Qué es, Señor? Y díjole: Tus oraciones y tus limosnas han subido en memoria á la presencia de Dios.
5Envía pues ahora hombres á Joppe, y haz venir á un Simón, que tiene por sobrenombre Pedro.
6Este posa en casa de un Simón, curtidor, que tiene su casa junto á la mar: él te dirá lo que te conviene hacer.
7E ido el ángel que hablaba con Cornelio, llamó dos de sus criados, y un devoto soldado de los que le asistían;
8A los cuales, después de habérselo contado todo, los envió á Joppe.
9Y al día siguiente, yendo ellos su camino, y llegando cerca de la ciudad, Pedro subió á la azotea á orar, cerca de la hora de sexta;
10Y aconteció que le vino una grande hambre, y quiso comer; pero mientras disponían, sobrevínole un éxtasis;
11Y vió el cielo abierto, y que descendía un vaso, como un gran lienzo, que atado de los cuatro cabos era bajado á la tierra;
12En el cual había de todos los animales cuadrúpedos de la tierra, y reptiles, y aves del cielo.
13Y le vino una voz: Levántate, Pedro, mata y come.
14Entonces Pedro dijo: Señor, no; porque ninguna cosa común é inmunda he comido jamás.
15Y volvió la voz hacia él la segunda vez: Lo que Dios limpió, no lo llames tú común.
16Y esto fué hecho por tres veces; y el vaso volvió á ser recogido en el cielo.
17Y estando Pedro dudando dentro de sí qué sería la visión que había visto, he aquí, los hombres que habían sido enviados por Cornelio, que, preguntando por la casa de Simón, llegaron á la puerta.
18Y llamando, preguntaron si un Simón que tenía por sobrenombre Pedro, posaba allí.
19Y estando Pedro pensando en la visión, le dijo el Espíritu: He aquí, tres hombres te buscan.
20Levántate, pues, y desciende, y no dudes ir con ellos; porque yo los he enviado.
21Entonces Pedro, descendiendo á los hombres que eran enviados por Cornelio, dijo: He aquí, yo soy el que buscáis: ¿cuál es la causa por la que habéis venido?
22Y ellos dijeron: Cornelio, el centurión, varón justo y temeroso de Dios, y que tiene testimonio de toda la nación de los Judíos, ha recibido respuesta por un santo ángel, de hacerte venir á su casa, y oir de ti palabras.
23Entonces metiéndolos dentro, los hospedó. Y al día siguiente, levantándose, se fué con ellos; y le acompañaron algunos de los hermanos de Joppe.
24Y al otro día entraron en Cesarea. Y Cornelio los estaba esperando, habiendo llamado á sus parientes y los amigos más familiares.
25Y como Pedro entró, salió Cornelio á recibirle; y derribándose á sus pies, adoró.
26Mas Pedro le levantó, diciendo: Levántate; yo mismo también soy hombre.
27Y hablando con él, entró, y halló á muchos que se habían juntado.
28Y les dijo: Vosotros sabéis que es abominable á un varón Judío juntarse ó llegarse á extranjero; mas me ha mostrado Dios que á ningún hombre llame común ó inmundo;
29Por lo cual, llamado, he venido sin dudar. Así que pregunto: ¿por qué causa me habéis hecho venir?
30Entonces Cornelio dijo: Cuatro días ha que á esta hora yo estaba ayuno; y á la hora de nona estando orando en mi casa, he aquí, un varón se puso delante de mí en vestido resplandeciente.
31Y dijo: Cornelio, tu oración es oída, y tus limosnas han venido en memoria en la presencia de Dios.
32Envía pues á Joppe, y haz venir á un Simón, que tiene por sobrenombre Pedro; éste posa en casa de Simón, curtidor, junto á la mar; el cual venido, te hablará.
33Así que, luego envié á ti; y tú has hecho bien en venir. Ahora pues, todos nosotros estamos aquí en la presencia de Dios, para oir todo lo que Dios te ha mandado.
34Entonces Pedro, abriendo su boca, dijo: Por verdad hallo que Dios no hace acepción de personas;
35Sino que de cualquiera nación que le teme y obra justicia, se agrada.
36Envió palabra Dios á los hijos de Israel, anunciando la paz por Jesucristo; éste es el Señor de todos.
37Vosotros sabéis lo que fué divulgado por toda Judea; comenzando desde Galilea después del bautismo que Juan predicó,
38Cuanto á Jesús de Nazaret; cómo le ungió Dios de Espíritu Santo y de potencia; el cual anduvo haciendo bienes, y sanando á todos los oprimidos del diablo; porque Dios era con él.
39Y nosotros somos testigos de todas las cosas que hizo en la tierra de Judea, y en Jerusalem; al cual mataron colgándole en un madero.
40A éste levantó Dios al tercer día, é hizo que apareciese manifiesto,
41No á todo el pueblo, sino á los testigos que Dios antes había ordenado, es á saber, á nosotros que comimos y bebimos con él, después que resucitó de los muertos.
42Y nos mandó que predicásemos al pueblo, y testificásemos que él es el que Dios ha puesto por Juez de vivos y muertos.
43A éste dan testimonio todos los profetas, de que todos los que en él creyeren, recibirán perdón de pecados por su nombre.
44Estando aún hablando Pedro estas palabras, el Espíritu Santo cayó sobre todos los que oían el sermón.
45Y se espantaron los fieles que eran de la circuncisión, que habían venido con Pedro, de que también sobre los Gentiles se derramase el don del Espíritu Santo.
46Porque los oían que hablaban en lenguas, y que magnificaban á Dios.
47Entonces respondió Pedro: ¿Puede alguno impedir el agua, para que no sean bautizados éstos que han recibido el Espíritu Santo también como nosotros?
48Y les mandó bautizar en el nombre del Señor Jesús. Entonces le rogaron que se quedase por algunos días.

1There was a certain man in Cæsarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,
2A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.
3He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.
4And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.
5And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:
6He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.
7And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;
8And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.
9On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:
10And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,
11And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
12Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
13And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
14But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
15And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
16This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.
17Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate,
18And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.
19While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
20Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
21Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?
22And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.
23Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
24And the morrow after they entered into Cæsarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends.
25And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.
26But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.
27And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.
28And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
29Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?
30And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
31And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.
32Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.
33Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.
34Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
35But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
36The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)
37That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judæa, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
38How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
39And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
40Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
41Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
42And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
43To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
44While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
45And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
46For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
47Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

1Now there was a certain man in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment,
2a devout man, and one who feared God with all his house, who gave gifts for the needy generously to the people, and always prayed to God.
3At about the ninth hour of the day, he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God coming to him and saying to him, “Cornelius!”
4He, fastening his eyes on him and being frightened, said, “What is it, Lord?” He said to him, “Your prayers and your gifts to the needy have gone up for a memorial before God.
5Now send men to Joppa, and get Simon, who is also called Peter.
6He is staying with a tanner named Simon, whose house is by the seaside.
7When the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier of those who waited on him continually.
8Having explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
9Now on the next day as they were on their journey and got close to the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray at about noon.
10He became hungry and desired to eat, but while they were preparing, he fell into a trance.
11He saw heaven opened and a certain container descending to him, like a great sheet let down by four corners on the earth,
12in which were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, reptiles, and birds of the sky.
13A voice came to him, “Rise, Peter, kill and eat!”
14But Peter said, “Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.”
15A voice came to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed, you must not call unclean.”
16This was done three times, and immediately the thing was received up into heaven.
17Now while Peter was very perplexed in himself what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon’s house, stood before the gate,
18and called and asked whether Simon, who was also called Peter, was lodging there.
19While Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men seek you.
20But arise, get down, and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.”
21Peter went down to the men, and said, “Behold, I am he whom you seek. Why have you come?”
22They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous man and one who fears God, and well spoken of by all the nation of the Jews, was directed by a holy angel to invite you to his house, and to listen to what you say.”
23So he called them in and provided a place to stay. On the next day Peter arose and went out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.
24On the next day they entered into Caesarea. Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his relatives and his near friends.
25When Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell down at his feet, and worshiped him.
26But Peter raised him up, saying, “Stand up! I myself am also a man.”
27As he talked with him, he went in and found many gathered together.
28He said to them, “You yourselves know how it is an unlawful thing for a man who is a Jew to join himself or come to one of another nation, but God has shown me that I shouldn’t call any man unholy or unclean.
29Therefore I also came without complaint when I was sent for. I ask therefore, why did you send for me?”
30Cornelius said, “Four days ago, I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour, I prayed in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing
31and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer is heard, and your gifts to the needy are remembered in the sight of God.
32Send therefore to Joppa and summon Simon, who is also called Peter. He is staying in the house of a tanner named Simon, by the seaside. When he comes, he will speak to you.’
33Therefore I sent to you at once, and it was good of you to come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God to hear all things that have been commanded you by God.”
34Peter opened his mouth and said, “Truly I perceive that God doesn’t show favoritism;
35but in every nation he who fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him.
36The word which he sent to the children of Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all—
37you yourselves know what happened, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
39We are witnesses of everything he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem; whom they also killed, hanging him on a tree.
40God raised him up the third day and gave him to be revealed,
41not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen before by God, to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that this is he who is appointed by God as the Judge of the living and the dead.
43All the prophets testify about him, that through his name everyone who believes in him will receive remission of sins.”
44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word.
45They of the circumcision who believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured out on the Gentiles.
46For they heard them speaking in other languages and magnifying God. Then Peter answered,
47“Can anyone forbid these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just like us.”
48He commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay some days.
