1Der Krieg zwischen dem Hause Sauls und dem Hause Davids zog sich dann in die Länge; aber Davids Macht nahm immerfort zu, während das Haus Sauls immer schwächer wurde.
2In Hebron wurden dem David folgende Söhne geboren: sein Erstgeborener war Amnon, von Ahinoam aus Jesreel;
3sein zweiter Sohn Kileab, von Abigail, der Witwe Nabals, aus Karmel; der dritte Absalom, der Sohn der Maacha, der Tochter Thalmais, des Königs von Gesur;
4der vierte Adonia, der Sohn der Haggith; der fünfte Sephatja, der Sohn der Abital;
5der sechste Jithream, von Davids Frau Egla. Diese wurden dem David in Hebron geboren.
6Solange nun der Krieg zwischen dem Hause Sauls und dem Hause Davids währte, hielt Abner treu zum Hause Sauls.
7Saul hatte aber ein Nebenweib gehabt namens Rizpa, eine Tochter Ajas. Nun richtete (Isboseth) eines Tages die Frage an Abner: »Warum hast du ein Verhältnis mit dem Nebenweibe meines Vaters gehabt?«
8Über diese Äußerung Isboseths geriet Abner in heftigen Zorn, so daß er ausrief: »Bin ich denn ein judäischer Hundskopf?! Bis heute habe ich dem Hause deines Vaters Saul und seinen Verwandten und Freunden treu gedient und dich nicht in Davids Hände fallen lassen, und doch wirfst du mir heute eine Verschuldung mit einem Weibe vor?
9So möge denn Gott mich, Abner, jetzt und künftighin strafen, wenn ich nicht das, was der HERR dem David zugeschworen hat, jetzt für ihn verwirkliche,
10daß ich nämlich das Königtum dem Hause Sauls nehme und den Thron Davids über Israel und über Juda aufrichte von Dan bis Beerseba!«
11Da vermochte jener dem Abner kein Wort mehr zu erwidern: so fürchtete er sich vor ihm.
12Darauf sandte Abner auf der Stelle Boten zu David und ließ (ihm) sagen: »Wem gehört das Land? Schließe einen Vertrag mit mir, dann stelle ich mich dir zur Verfügung, um ganz Israel auf deine Seite zu bringen.«
13(David) gab zur Antwort: »Gut! Ich will einen Vertrag mit dir schließen; doch fordere ich eins von dir, nämlich: du darfst mir nicht vor die Augen treten, es sei denn, daß du Sauls Tochter Michal mitbringst, wenn du herkommst, um vor mir zu erscheinen.«
14Zugleich schickte David aber auch Gesandte an Isboseth, den Sohn Sauls, mit der Forderung: »Gib mir meine Gattin Michal zurück, die ich mir um den Preis von hundert Vorhäuten der Philister zur Frau gewonnen habe!«
15Da sandte Isboseth hin und ließ sie ihrem Gatten Paltiel, dem Sohne des Lais, wegnehmen.
16Ihr Gatte aber ging mit ihr und begleitete sie unter beständigem Weinen bis Bachurim; dann, als Abner ihn aufforderte, heimzugehen, kehrte er nach Hause zurück.
17Abner aber hatte mit den Ältesten von Israel Verhandlungen angeknüpft und ihnen vorgestellt: »Schon längst habt ihr David zum König über euch gewünscht:
18so führt es denn jetzt aus! Denn der HERR hat im Hinblick auf David verheißen: ›Durch die Hand meines Knechtes David will ich mein Volk Israel aus der Gewalt der Philister und aller seiner Feinde befreien.‹«
19Ebenso hatte Abner auch mit den Benjaminiten heimlich unterhandelt; und endlich machte er sich auf den Weg, um David in Hebron persönlich alles mitzuteilen, was Israel und der ganze Stamm Benjamin beschlossen hatten.
20Als nun Abner in Begleitung von zwanzig Männern zu David nach Hebron kam und David ihm und seinen Begleitern ein Festmahl hatte ausrichten lassen,
21sagte Abner zu David: »Ich will mich jetzt aufmachen und hingehen und ganz Israel um meinen Herrn, den König, sammeln, damit sie einen Vertrag mit dir schließen; dann kannst du als König ganz nach Herzenswunsch regieren!« Darauf entließ David den Abner, der sich in Frieden entfernte.
22Da aber kamen gerade Davids Leute und Joab von einem Streifzug zurück und brachten reiche Beute mit, als Abner sich bereits nicht mehr bei David in Hebron befand, sondern dieser ihn entlassen hatte, so daß er in Frieden heimzog.
23Als nun Joab mit der ganzen Mannschaft, die bei ihm war, heimkam und man ihm berichtete: »Abner, der Sohn Ners, ist zum König gekommen, und der hat ihn ruhig wieder ziehen lassen«,
24da ging Joab zum König hinein und sagte: »Was hast du da getan? Ich weiß, Abner ist bei dir gewesen: warum hast du ihn nun ungehindert wieder ziehen lassen?
25Du mußt doch Abner, den Sohn Ners, so weit kennen, daß er nur gekommen ist, um dich zu überlisten! Er will nur all dein Tun und Lassen auskundschaften und alles, was du vorhast, erkunden.«
26Als Joab dann David verlassen hatte, sandte er Boten hinter Abner her, die ihn von der Zisterne Sira wieder zurückholen mußten, ohne daß David etwas davon wußte.
27Als Abner nun nach Hebron zurückkam, führte Joab ihn abseits in das Innere des Tores, als wollte er vertraulich mit ihm reden; dort versetzte er ihm einen Stich in den Unterleib, daß er starb – um die Blutrache für seinen Bruder Asahel zu vollziehen.
28Als David hernach die Sache erfuhr, rief er aus: »Ich und mein Königtum sind für immer schuldlos vor dem HERRN an der Ermordung Abners, des Sohnes Ners!
29(Sein Blut) falle auf das Haupt Joabs und auf sein ganzes Geschlecht zurück! Möge es im Hause Joabs nie an Schwindsüchtigen und Aussätzigen fehlen, nie an solchen, die an Krücken gehen, die durchs Schwert fallen und denen es an Brot mangelt!«
30Als nun Joab und sein Bruder Abisai Abner ermordet hatten, weil er ihren Bruder Asahel bei Gibeon im Kampf getötet hatte,
31befahl David dem Joab und allen Personen, die zu seiner Umgebung gehörten: »Zerreißt eure Kleider, legt Trauergewänder an und stimmt die Totenklage an vor Abners Bahre her!« Der König David aber ging hinter der Bahre her;
32und als man Abner in Hebron begrub, brach der König am Grabe Abners in lautes Weinen aus, und das ganze Volk weinte mit.
33Sodann stimmte der König ein Klagelied um Abner an, das da lautete: Mußte Abner sterben, wie ein Gottloser stirbt?
34Deine Hände waren nicht gefesselt und deine Füße nicht in Ketten gelegt: nein, du bist gefallen, wie man vor Verbrechern fällt! Da weinte alles Volk noch mehr um ihn.
35Als dann alles Volk kam, um David zum Essen zu bewegen, solange es noch Tag war, schwur David: »Gott strafe mich jetzt und künftig, wenn ich vor Sonnenuntergang Brot oder irgend etwas anderes genieße!«
36Als alles Volk dies wahrnahm, gefiel es ihnen wohl; überhaupt fand das ganze Verhalten des Königs beim gesamten Volke Beifall;
37und das ganze Volk, auch ganz Israel, kam an jenem Tage zu der Erkenntnis, daß die Ermordung Abners, des Sohnes Ners, nicht vom Könige ausgegangen war.
38Auch sagte der König zu seiner Umgebung: »Wißt ihr nicht, daß am heutigen Tage ein Fürst und Großer in Israel gefallen ist?
39Ich aber, obgleich zum König gesalbt, bin jetzt noch zu machtlos, und diese Männer, die Söhne der Zeruja, sind zu hart für mich. Der HERR lasse den, der die Freveltat begangen hat, für seinen Frevel büßen!«

1Y HUBO larga guerra entre la casa de Saúl y la casa de David; mas David se iba fortificando, y la casa de Saúl iba en disminución.
2Y nacieron hijos á David en Hebrón: su primogénito fué Ammón, de Ahinoam Jezreelita;
3Su segundo Chileab, de Abigail la mujer de Nabal, el del Carmelo; el tercero, Absalóm, hijo de Maachâ, hija de Talmai rey de Gessur:
4El cuarto, Adonías hijo de Haggith; el quinto, Saphatías hijo de Abital;
5El sexto, Jetream, de Egla mujer de David. Estos nacieron á David en Hebrón.
6Y como había guerra entre la casa de Saúl y la de David, aconteció que Abner se esforzaba por la casa de Saúl.
7Y había Saúl tenido una concubina que se llamaba Rispa, hija de Aja. Y dijo Is-boseth á Abner: ¿Por qué has entrado á la concubina de mi padre?
8Y enojóse Abner en gran manera por las palabras de Is-boseth, y dijo: ¿Soy yo cabeza de perros respecto de Judá? Yo he hecho hoy misericordia con la casa de Saúl tu padre, con sus hermanos, y con sus amigos, y no te he entregado en las manos de David: ¿y tú me haces hoy cargo del pecado de esta mujer?
9Así haga Dios á Abner y así le añada, si como ha jurado Jehová á David no hiciere yo así con él,
10Trasladando el reino de la casa de Saúl, y confirmando el trono de David sobre Israel y sobre Judá, desde Dan hasta Beer-sebah.
11Y él no pudo responder palabra á Abner, porque le temía.
12Y envió Abner mensajeros á David de su parte, diciendo: ¿Cúya es la tierra? Y que le dijesen: Haz alianza conmigo, y he aquí que mi mano será contigo para volver á ti á todo Israel.
13Y David dijo: Bien; yo haré contigo alianza: mas una cosa te pido, y es, que no me vengas á ver sin que primero traigas á Michâl la hija de Saúl, cuando vinieres á verme.
14Después de esto envió David mensajeros á Is-boseth hijo de Saúl, diciendo: Restitúyeme á mi mujer Michâl, la cual yo desposé conmigo por cien prepucios de Filisteos.
15Entonces Is-boseth envió, y quitóla á su marido Paltiel, hijo de Lais.
16Y su marido fué con ella, siguiéndola y llorando hasta Bahurim. Y díjole Abner: Anda, vuélvete. Entonces él se volvió.
17Y habló Abner con los ancianos de Israel, diciendo: Ayer y antes procurabais que David fuese rey sobre vosotros;
18Ahora, pues, hacedlo; porque Jehová ha hablado á David, diciendo: Por la mano de mi siervo David libraré á mi pueblo Israel de mano de los Filisteos, y de mano de todos sus enemigos.
19Y habló también Abner á los de Benjamín: y fué también Abner á Hebrón á decir á David todo el parecer de los de Israel y de toda la casa de Benjamín.
20Vino pues Abner á David en Hebrón, y con él veinte hombres: y David hizo banquete á Abner y á los que con él habían venido.
21Y dijo Abner á David: Yo me levantaré é iré, y juntaré á mi señor el rey á todo Israel, para que hagan contigo alianza, y tú reines como deseas. David despidió luego á Abner, y él se fué en paz.
22Y he aquí los siervos de David y Joab, que venían del campo, y traían consigo gran presa. Mas Abner no estaba con David en Hebrón, que ya lo había él despedido, y él se había ido en paz.
23Y luego que llegó Joab y todo el ejército que con él estaba, fué dado aviso á Joab, diciendo: Abner hijo de Ner ha venido al rey, y él le ha despedido, y se fué en paz.
24Entonces Joab vino al rey, y díjole: ¿Qué has hecho? He aquí habíase venido Abner á ti: ¿por qué pues lo dejaste que se fuése?
25¿Sabes tú que Abner hijo de Ner ha venido para engañarte, y á saber tu salida y tu entrada, y por entender todo lo que tú haces?
26Y saliéndose Joab de con David, envió mensajeros tras Abner, los cuales le volvieron desde el pozo de Sira, sin saberlo David.
27Y como Abner volvió á Hebrón, apartólo Joab al medio de la puerta, hablando con él blandamente, y allí le hirió por la quinta costilla, á causa de la muerte de Asael su hermano, y murió.
28Cuando David supo después esto, dijo: Limpio estoy yo y mi reino, por Jehová, para siempre, de la sangre de Abner hijo de Ner.
29Caiga sobre la cabeza de Joab, y sobre toda la casa de su padre; que nunca falte de la casa de Joab quien padezca flujo, ni leproso, ni quien ande con báculo, ni quien muera á cuchillo, ni quien tenga falta de pan.
30Joab pues y Abisai su hermano mataron á Abner, porque él había muerto á Asael, hermano de ellos en la batalla de Gabaón.
31Entonces dijo David á Joab, y á todo el pueblo que con él estaba: Romped vuestros vestidos, y ceñíos de sacos, y haced duelo delante de Abner. Y el rey iba detrás del féretro.
32Y sepultaron á Abner en Hebrón: y alzando el rey su voz, lloró junto al sepulcro de Abner; y lloró también todo el pueblo.
33Y endechando el rey al mismo Abner, decía: ¿Murió Abner como muere un villano?
34Tus manos no estaban atadas, ni tus pies ligados con grillos: caíste como los que caen delante de malos hombres. Y todo el pueblo volvió á llorar sobre él.
35Y como todo el pueblo viniese á dar de comer pan á David siendo aún de día, David juró, diciendo: Así me haga Dios y así me añada, si antes que se ponga el sol gustare yo pan, ú otra cualquier cosa.
36Súpolo así todo el pueblo, y plugo en sus ojos; porque todo lo que el rey hacía parecía bien en ojos de todo el pueblo.
37Y todo el pueblo y todo Israel entendieron aquel día, que no había venido del rey que Abner hijo de Ner muriese.
38Y el rey dijo á sus siervos: ¿No sabéis que ha caído hoy en Israel un príncipe, y grande?
39Que yo ahora aun soy tierno rey ungido; y estos hombres, los hijos de Sarvia, muy duros me son: Jehová dé el pago al que mal hace, conforme á su malicia.

1Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.
2And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;
3And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;
4And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;
5And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David’s wife. These were born to David in Hebron.
6And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.
7And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ish-bosheth said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father’s concubine?
8Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog’s head, which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman?
9So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the LORD hath sworn to David, even so I do to him;
10To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beer-sheba.
11And he could not answer Abner a word again, because he feared him.
12And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.
13And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul’s daughter, when thou comest to see my face.
14And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Saul’s son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines.
15And Ish-bosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish.
16And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned.
17And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you:
18Now then do it: for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.
19And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin.
20So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast.
21And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.
22And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.
23When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.
24Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?
25Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest.
26And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not.
27And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.
28And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner:
29Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.
30So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.
31And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier.
32And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.
33And the king lamented over Abner, and said, Died Abner as a fool dieth?
34Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people wept again over him.
35And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.
36And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people.
37For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner.
38And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?
39And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.

1Now there was long war between Saul’s house and David’s house. David grew stronger and stronger, but Saul’s house grew weaker and weaker.
2Sons were born to David in Hebron. His firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

9God do so to Abner, and more also, if, as the LORD has sworn to David, I don’t do even so to him:
10to transfer the kingdom from Saul’s house, and to set up David’s throne over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.”
11He could not answer Abner another word, because he was afraid of him.
12Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, “Whose is the land?” and saying, “Make your alliance with me, and behold, my hand will be with you to bring all Israel around to you.”
13David said, “Good. I will make a treaty with you, but one thing I require of you. That is, you will not see my face unless you first bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.”
14David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Deliver me my wife Michal, whom I was given to marry for one hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”
15Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, Paltiel the son of Laish.
16Her husband went with her, weeping as he went, and followed her to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, “Go! Return!” and he returned.
17Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, “In times past, you sought for David to be king over you.
18Now then do it! For the LORD has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of my servant David, I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.’”
19Abner also spoke in the ears of Benjamin; and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and to the whole house of Benjamin.
20So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. David made Abner and the men who were with him a feast.
21Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may reign over all that your soul desires.” David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.
22Behold, David’s servants and Joab came from a raid and brought in a great plunder with them; but Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace.
23When Joab and all the army who was with him had come, they told Joab, “Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he has sent him away, and he has gone in peace.”
24Then Joab came to the king and said, “What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you. Why is it that you have sent him away, and he is already gone?
25You know Abner the son of Ner. He came to deceive you, and to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you do.”
26When Joab had come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah; but David didn’t know it.
27When Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the middle of the gate to speak with him quietly, and struck him there in the body, so that he died for the blood of Asahel his brother.
28Afterward, when David heard it, he said, “I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner.
29Let it fall on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house. Let there not fail from the house of Joab one who has a discharge, or who is a leper, or who leans on a staff, or who falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.”
30So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.
31David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes, and clothe yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn in front of Abner.” King David followed the bier.
32They buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at Abner’s grave; and all the people wept.
33The king lamented for Abner, and said, “Should Abner die as a fool dies?
34Your hands weren’t bound, and your feet weren’t put into fetters. As a man falls before the children of iniquity, so you fell.” All the people wept again over him.
35All the people came to urge David to eat bread while it was yet day; but David swore, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else, until the sun goes down.”
36All the people took notice of it, and it pleased them, as whatever the king did pleased all the people.
37So all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to kill Abner the son of Ner.
38The king said to his servants, “Don’t you know that a prince and a great man has fallen today in Israel?
39I am weak today, though anointed king. These men, the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me. May the LORD reward the evildoer according to his wickedness.”
