1After the death of Saul, when Dauid was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites and had beene two dayes in Ziklag,
2Behold, a man came the third day out of the host from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth vpon his head: and when hee came to Dauid, he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.
3Then Dauid saide vnto him, Whence commest thou? And he said vnto him, Out of the host of Israel I am escaped.
4And Dauid saide vnto him, What is done? I pray thee, tell me. Then he said, that the people is fled from the battel, and many of the people are ouerthrowen, and dead, and also Saul and Ionathan his sonne are dead.
5And Dauid saide vnto the yong man that tolde it him, Howe knowest thou that Saul and Ionathan his sonne be dead?
6Then the yong man that tolde him, answered, As I came to mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned vpon his speare, and loe, the charets and horsemen followed hard after him.
7And when he looked backe, he saw me, and called me. And I answered, Here am I.
8And he said vnto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.
9Then saide hee vnto me, I pray thee come vpon mee, and slay me: for anguish is come vpon me, because my life is yet whole in me.
10So I came vpon him, and slewe him, and because I was sure that hee coulde not liue, after that hee had fallen, I tooke the crowne that was vpon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arme, and brought them hither vnto my lord.
11Then Dauid tooke hold on his clothes, and rent them, and likewise al the men that were with him.
12And they mourned and wept, and fasted vntil euen, for Saul and for Ionathan his sonne, and for the people of the Lord, and for the house of Israel, because they were slaine with the sword.
13Afterward Dauid saide vnto the yong man that tolde it him, Whence art thou? And hee answered, I am the sonne of a stranger an Amalekite.
14And Dauid said vnto him, How wast thou not afrayd, to put forth thine hand to destroy the Anoynted of the Lord?
15Then Dauid called one of his yong men, and said, Goe neere, and fall vpon him. And hee smote him that he dyed.
16Then said Dauid vnto him, Thy blood be vpon thine owne head: for thine owne mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I haue slaine the Lords Anoynted.
17Then Dauid mourned with this lamentation ouer Saul, and ouer Ionathan his sonne,
18(Also he bade them teach the children of Iudah to shoote, as it is written in the booke of Iasher)
19O noble Israel, hee is slane vpon thy hie places: how are the mightie ouerthrowen!
20Tell it not in Gath, nor publish it in the streetes of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistims reioyce, lest the daughters of the vncircumcised triumph.
21Ye mountaines of Gilboa, vpon you be neither dewe nor raine, nor be there fieldes of offrings: for there the shielde of the mightie is cast downe, the shielde of Saul, as though he had not bene anointed with oyle.
22The bow of Ionathan neuer turned backe, neither did the sword of Saul returne emptie from the blood of the slaine, and from the fatte of the mightie.
23Saul and Ionathan were louely and pleasant in their liues, and in their deaths they were not deuided: they were swifter then eagles, they were stronger then lions.
24Yee daughters of Israel, weepe for Saul, which clothed you in skarlet, with pleasures, and hanged ornaments of gold vpon your apparel.
25Howe were the mightie slaine in the mids of the battel! O Ionathan, thou wast slaine in thine hie places.
26Wo is me for thee, my brother Ionathan: very kinde hast thou bene vnto me: thy loue to me was wonderfull, passing the loue of women: howe are the mightie ouerthrowen, and the weapons of warre destroyed!

1Y ACONTECIÓ después de la muerte de Saúl, que vuelto David de la derrota de los Amalecitas, estuvo dos días en Siclag:
2Y al tercer día acaeció, que vino uno del campo de Saúl, rotos sus vestidos, y tierra sobre su cabeza: y llegando á David, postróse en tierra, é hizo reverencia.
3Y preguntóle David: ¿De dónde vienes? Y él respondió: Heme escapado del campo de Israel.
4Y David le dijo: ¿Qué ha acontecido? ruégote que me lo digas. Y él respondió: El pueblo huyó de la batalla, y también muchos del pueblo cayeron y son muertos: también Saúl y Jonathán su hijo murieron.
5Y dijo David á aquel mancebo que le daba las nuevas: ¿Cómo sabes que Saúl es muerto, y Jonathán su hijo?
6Y el mancebo que le daba las nuevas respondió: Casualmente vine al monte de Gilboa, y hallé á Saúl que estaba recostado sobre su lanza, y venían tras él carros y gente de á caballo.
7Y como él miró atrás, vióme y llamóme; y yo dije: Heme aquí.
8Y él me dijo: ¿Quién eres tú? Y yo le respondí: Soy Amalecita.
9Y él me volvió á decir: Yo te ruego que te pongas sobre mí, y me mates, porque me toman angustias, y toda mi alma está aún en mí.
10Yo entonces púseme sobre él, y matélo, porque sabía que no podía vivir después de su caída: y tomé la corona que tenía en su cabeza, y la ajorca que traía en su brazo, y helas traído acá á mi señor.
11Entonces David trabando de sus vestidos, rompiólos; y lo mismo hicieron los hombres que estaban con él.
12Y lloraron y lamentaron, y ayunaron hasta la tarde, por Saúl y por Jonathán su hijo, y por el pueblo de Jehová, y por la casa de Israel: porque habían caído á cuchillo.
13Y David dijo á aquel mancebo que le había traído las nuevas: ¿De dónde eres tú? Y él respondió: Yo soy hijo de un extranjero, Amalecita.
14Y díjole David: ¿Cómo no tuviste temor de extender tu mano para matar al ungido de Jehová?
15Entonces llamó David uno de los mancebos, y díjole: Llega, y mátalo. Y él lo hirió, y murió.
16Y David le dijo: Tu sangre sea sobre tu cabeza, pues que tu boca atestiguó contra ti, diciendo: Yo maté al ungido de Jehová.
17Y endechó David á Saúl y á Jonathán su hijo con esta endecha.
18(Dijo también que enseñasen al arco á los hijos de Judá. He aquí que está escrito en el libro del derecho:)
19¡Perecido ha la gloria de Israel sobre tus montañas! ¡Cómo han caído los valientes!
20No lo denunciéis en Gath, no deis las nuevas en las plazas de Ascalón; porque no se alegren las hijas de los Filisteos, porque no salten de gozo las hijas de los incircuncisos.
21Montes de Gilboa, ni rocío ni lluvia caiga sobre vosotros, ni seáis tierras de ofrendas; porque allí fué desechado el escudo de los valientes, el escudo de Saúl, como si no hubiera sido ungido con aceite.
22Sin sangre de muertos, sin grosura de valientes, el arco de Jonathán nunca volvió, ni la espada de Saúl se tornó vacía.
23Saúl y Jonathán, amados y queridos en su vida, en su muerte tampoco fueron apartados: más ligeros que águilas, más fuertes que leones.
24Hijas de Israel, llorad sobre Saúl, que os vestía de escarlata en regocijos, que adornaba vuestras ropas con ornamentos de oro.
25¡Cómo han caído los valientes en medio de la batalla! ¡Jonathán, muerto en tus alturas!
26Angustia tengo por ti, hermano mío Jonathán, que me fuiste muy dulce: más maravilloso me fué tu amor, que el amor de las mujeres.
27¡Cómo han caído los valientes, y perecieron las armas de guerra!

1Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;
2It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.
3And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.
4And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.
5And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?
6And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.
7And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.
8And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.
9He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.
10So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.
11Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:
12And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.
13And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.
14And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?
15And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.
16And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD’s anointed.
17And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:
18(Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)
19The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!
20Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.
21Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.
22From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.
23Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
24Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel.
25How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.
26I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.
27How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!

1After the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag,
2on the third day, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the earth and showed respect.
3David said to him, “Where do you come from?” He said to him, “I have escaped out of the camp of Israel.”
4David said to him, “How did it go? Please tell me.” He answered, “The people have fled from the battle, and many of the people also have fallen and are dead. Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.”
5David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?”
6The young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance on Mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning on his spear; and behold, the chariots and the horsemen followed close behind him.
7When he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. I answered, ‘Here I am.’
8He said to me, ‘Who are you?’ I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’
9He said to me, ‘Please stand beside me, and kill me, for anguish has taken hold of me because my life lingers in me.’
10So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”
11Then David took hold on his clothes and tore them; and all the men who were with him did likewise.
12They mourned, wept, and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
13David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?” He answered, “I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite.”
14David said to him, “Why were you not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?”
15David called one of the young men and said, “Go near, and cut him down!” He struck him so that he died.
16David said to him, “Your blood be on your head, for your mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have slain the LORD’s anointed.’”
17David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son
18(and he commanded them to teach the children of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):
19“Your glory, Israel, was slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!
20Don’t tell it in Gath. Don’t publish it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.
21You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain on you, and no fields of offerings; for there the shield of the mighty was defiled and cast away, the shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.
