1Joram, fils d'Achab, commença à régner sur Israël à Samarie la dix-huitième année de Josaphat, roi de Juda, et il régna douze ans.
2Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux du SEIGNEUR, mais non pas autant que son père et que sa mère, car il renversa le pilier sacré de Baal que son père avait fait.
3Néanmoins, il s'attacha aux péchés de Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, par lesquels il avait fait pécher Israël, et il ne s'en détourna point.
4Or, Méscha, roi de Moab, était éleveur de troupeaux ; il fournissait au roi d'Israël cent mille agneaux et la laine de cent mille béliers.
5Mais à la mort d'Achab, le roi de Moab se rebella contre le roi d'Israël.
6Le roi Joram sortit de Samarie en ce temps-là, et passa en revue tout Israël.
7Il se mit en marche, et fit dire à Josaphat, roi de Juda : « Le roi de Moab s'est rebellé contre moi. Iras-tu avec moi combattre contre Moab ? » Il répondit : « J'irai. Je suis comme toi, mon peuple est comme ton peuple, mes chevaux sont comme tes chevaux. »
8Il ajouta : « Par quel chemin monterons-nous ? » Joram répondit : « Par le chemin du désert d'Édom. »
9Le roi d'Israël, le roi de Juda et le roi d'Édom se mirent donc en marche. Après avoir fait un détour de sept jours, il n'y eut plus d'eau pour l'armée et pour les bêtes qui les suivaient.
10Le roi d'Israël s'écria : « Hélas ! Le SEIGNEUR a appelé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab ! »
11Mais Josaphat dit : « N'y a-t-il ici aucun prophète du SEIGNEUR, pour que nous puissions consulter le SEIGNEUR par son intermédiaire ? » L'un des serviteurs du roi d'Israël répondit : « Il y a ici Élisée, fils de Schaphath, qui versait l'eau sur les mains d'Élie. »
12Josaphat dit : « La parole du SEIGNEUR est avec lui. » Le roi d'Israël, Josaphat et le roi d'Édom descendirent donc vers lui.
13Élisée dit au roi d'Israël : « Qu'y a-t-il entre moi et toi ? Va vers les prophètes de ton père et vers les prophètes de ta mère. » Le roi d'Israël lui dit : « Non, car le SEIGNEUR a appelé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab. »
14Élisée dit : « Le SEIGNEUR des armées est vivant, lui devant qui je me tiens ! Assurément, si je n'avais pas d'égard pour Josaphat, roi de Juda, je ne ferais aucune attention à toi et je ne te regarderais même pas..
15Mais maintenant, amenez-moi un joueur de harpe. » Tandis que le joueur de harpe jouait, la main du SEIGNEUR fut sur Élisée.
16Il dit : « Ainsi parle le SEIGNEUR : « Remplissez cette vallée de tranchées. »
17Car ainsi parle le SEIGNEUR : « Vous ne verrez point de vent et vous ne verrez point de pluie, et pourtant cette vallée se remplira d'eau ; et vous boirez, vous, vos troupeaux et vos bêtes de somme.
18Mais cela est peu de chose aux yeux du SEIGNEUR. Il livrera aussi les Moabites entre vos mains.
19Vous frapperez toutes les villes fortifiées et toutes les villes d'élite, vous abattrez tous les bons arbres, vous boucherez toutes les sources d'eau, et vous ruinerez avec des pierres tous les meilleurs champs. » »
20Le matin, au moment de présenter l'offrande, voici, l'eau arriva par le chemin d'Édom, et le pays fut rempli d'eau.
21Quand tous les Moabites apprirent que les rois montaient pour les combattre, ils rassemblèrent tous ceux qui étaient en âge de porter les armes, des plus jeunes aux plus vieux, et ils se tinrent sur la frontière.
22Ils se levèrent de bon matin, et quand le soleil brilla sur les eaux, les Moabites virent vis-à-vis d'eux les eaux rouges comme du sang.
23Ils s'écrièrent : « C'est du sang ! Les rois se sont assurément détruits les uns les autres, ils se sont entre-tués. Maintenant, Moab, au pillage ! »
24Mais lorsqu'ils arrivèrent au camp d'Israël, les Israélites se levèrent et frappèrent les Moabites, qui s'enfuirent devant eux. Ils avancèrent dans le pays tout en frappant les Moabites.
25Ils détruisirent les villes ; sur chaque bon champ, chaque homme jeta sa pierre jusqu'à le remplir ; ils bouchèrent toutes les sources d'eau et abattirent tous les bons arbres. Il ne resta que les pierres de Kir-Haréseth, que les frondeurs encerclèrent et attaquèrent.
26Lorsque le roi de Moab vit que la bataille était trop forte pour lui, il prit avec lui sept cents hommes tirant l'épée, pour faire une percée jusqu'au roi d'Édom ; mais ils ne purent y parvenir.
27Il prit alors son fils aîné, qui devait régner à sa place, et l'offrit en holocauste sur la muraille. Une grande indignation s'éleva contre Israël ; ils s'éloignèrent de lui et retournèrent dans leur pays.

1Y JORAM hijo de Achâb comenzó á reinar en Samaria sobre Israel el año dieciocho de Josaphat rey de Judá; y reinó doce años.
2E hizo lo malo en ojos de Jehová, aunque no como su padre y su madre; porque quitó las estatuas de Baal que su padre había hecho.
3Mas allegóse á los pecados de Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat, que hizo pecar á Israel; y no se apartó de ellos.
4Entonces Mesa rey de Moab era propietario de ganados, y pagaba al rey de Israel cien mil corderos y cien mil carneros con sus vellones.
5Mas muerto Achâb, el rey de Moab se rebeló contra el rey de Israel.
6Y salió entonces de Samaria el rey Joram, é inspeccionó á todo Israel.
7Y fué y envió á decir á Josaphat rey de Judá: El rey de Moab se ha rebelado contra mí: ¿irás tú conmigo á la guerra contra Moab? Y él respondió: Iré, porque como yo, así tú; como mi pueblo, así tu pueblo; como mis caballos, así también tus caballos.
8Y dijo: ¿Por qué camino iremos? Y él respondió: Por el camino del desierto de Idumea.
9Partieron pues el rey de Israel, y el rey de Judá, y el rey de Idumea; y como anduvieron rodeando por el desierto siete días de camino, faltóles el agua para el ejército, y para las bestias que los seguían.
10Entonces el rey de Israel dijo: ¡Ah! que ha llamado Jehová estos tres reyes para entregarlos en manos de los Moabitas.
11Mas Josaphat dijo: ¿No hay aquí profeta de Jehová, para que consultemos á Jehová por él? Y uno de los siervos del rey de Israel respondió y dijo: Aquí está Eliseo hijo de Saphat, que daba agua á manos á Elías.
12Y Josaphat dijo: Este tendrá palabra de Jehová. Y descendieron á él el rey de Israel, y Josaphat, y el rey de Idumea.
13Entonces Eliseo dijo al rey de Israel: ¿Qué tengo yo contigo? Ve á los profetas de tu padre, y á los profetas de tu madre. Y el rey de Israel le respondió: No: porque ha juntado Jehová estos tres reyes para entregarlos en manos de los Moabitas.
14Y Eliseo dijo: Vive Jehová de los ejércitos, en cuya presencia estoy, que si no tuviese respeto al rostro de Josaphat rey de Judá, no mirara á ti, ni te viera.
15Mas ahora traedme un tañedor. Y mientras el tañedor tocaba, la mano de Jehová fué sobre Eliseo.
16Y dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: Haced en este valle muchas acequias.
17Porque Jehová ha dicho así: No veréis viento, ni veréis lluvia, y este valle será lleno de agua, y beberéis vosotros, y vuestras bestias, y vuestros ganados.
18Y esto es cosa ligera en los ojos de Jehová; dará también á los Moabitas en vuestras manos.
19Y vosotros heriréis á toda ciudad fortalecida y á toda villa hermosa, y talaréis todo buen árbol, y cegaréis todas las fuentes de aguas, y destruiréis con piedras toda tierra fértil.
20Y aconteció que por la mañana, cuando se ofrece el sacrificio, he aquí vinieron aguas por el camino de Idumea, y la tierra fué llena de aguas.
21Y todos los de Moab, como oyeron que los reyes subían á pelear contra ellos, juntáronse desde todos los que ceñían talabarte arriba, y pusiéronse en la frontera.
22Y como se levantaron por la mañana, y lució el sol sobre las aguas, vieron los de Moab desde lejos las aguas rojas como sangre;
23Y dijeron: ¡Sangre es esta de espada! Los reyes se han revuelto, y cada uno ha muerto á su compañero. Ahora pues, ¡Moab, á la presa!
24Mas cuando llegaron al campo de Israel, levantáronse los Israelitas é hirieron á los de Moab, los cuales huyeron delante de ellos: siguieron empero hiriendo todavía á los de Moab.
25Y asolaron las ciudades, y en todas las heredades fértiles echó cada uno su piedra, y las llenaron; cegaron también todas las fuentes de las aguas, y derribaron todos los buenos árboles; hasta que en Kir-hareseth solamente dejaron sus piedras; porque los honderos la cercaron, y la hirieron.
26Y cuando el rey de Moab vió que la batalla lo vencía, tomó consigo setecientos hombres que sacaban espada, para romper contra el rey de Idumea: mas no pudieron.
27Entonces arrebató á su primogénito que había de reinar en su lugar, y sacrificóle en holocausto sobre el muro. Y hubo grande enojo en Israel; y retiráronse de él, y volviéronse á su tierra.

1Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.
2And he wrought evil in the sight of the LORD; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made.
3Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.
4And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred thousand rams, with the wool.
5But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
6And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel.
7And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and my horses as thy horses.
8And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness of Edom.
9So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days’ journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.
10And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!
11But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.
12And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the LORD is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.
14And Elisha said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.
15But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him.
16And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Make this valley full of ditches.
17For thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
18And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.
19And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.
20And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
21And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border.
22And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood:
23And they said, This is blood: the kings are surely slain, and they have smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.
24And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in their country.
25And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kir-haraseth left they the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.
26And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not.
27Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

1Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.
2He did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, but not like his father and like his mother, for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made.
3Nevertheless he held to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin. He didn’t depart from them.
4Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder; and he supplied the king of Israel with one hundred thousand lambs and the wool of one hundred thousand rams.
5But when Ahab was dead, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
6King Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel.
7He went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me against Moab to battle?” He said, “I will go up. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”
8Then he said, “Which way shall we go up?” Jehoram answered, “The way of the wilderness of Edom.”
9So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and the king of Edom, and they marched for seven days along a circuitous route. There was no water for the army or for the animals that followed them.
10The king of Israel said, “Alas! For the LORD has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”
11But Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there a prophet of the LORD here, that we may inquire of the LORD by him?” One of the king of Israel’s servants answered, “Elisha the son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah, is here.”
12Jehoshaphat said, “The LORD’s word is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father, and to the prophets of your mother.” The king of Israel said to him, “No, for the LORD has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”
14Elisha said, “As the LORD of Armies lives, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I respect the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward you, nor see you.
15But now bring me a musician.” When the musician played, the LORD’s hand came on him.
16He said, “The LORD says, ‘Make this valley full of trenches.’
17For the LORD says, ‘You will not see wind, neither will you see rain, yet that valley will be filled with water, and you will drink, both you and your livestock and your other animals.
18This is an easy thing in the LORD’s sight. He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.
19You shall strike every fortified city and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all springs of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.’”
20In the morning, about the time of offering the sacrifice, behold, water came by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
21Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all who were able to put on armor, young and old, and stood on the border.
22They rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone on the water, and the Moabites saw the water opposite them as red as blood.
23They said, “This is blood. The kings are surely destroyed, and they have struck each other. Now therefore, Moab, to the plunder!”
24When they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and struck the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they went forward into the land attacking the Moabites.
25They beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land each man cast his stone, and filled it. They also stopped all the springs of water and cut down all the good trees, until in Kir Hareseth all they left was its stones; however the men armed with slings went around it and attacked it.
26When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too severe for him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew a sword, to break through to the king of Edom; but they could not.
27Then he took his oldest son who would have reigned in his place, and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. There was great wrath against Israel; and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.
