1Als nun der König Hiskia das vernommen hatte, zerriß er seine Kleider, hüllte sich in Sackleinen und begab sich in den Tempel des HERRN;
2seinen Hausminister Eljakim aber und den Staatsschreiber Sebna samt den vornehmsten Priestern sandte er, ebenfalls in Trauerkleider gehüllt, zu dem Propheten Jesaja, dem Sohne des Amoz.
3Diese sagten zu ihm: »So läßt Hiskia dir sagen: ›Ein Tag der Bedrängnis, der Züchtigung und Schmach ist der heutige Tag; denn die Kinder sind bis zum Muttermund gekommen, aber es fehlt an Kraft zum Gebären.
4Vielleicht aber wird der HERR, dein Gott, auf alle Worte des Großwesirs hören, den sein Herr, der König von Assyrien, hergesandt hat, um den lebendigen Gott zu verhöhnen, und wird ihn für die Worte strafen, die der HERR, dein Gott, gehört hat. So lege denn Fürbitte ein für den Rest, der noch vorhanden ist!‹«
5Als nun die Diener des Königs Hiskia zu Jesaja gekommen waren,
6sagte dieser zu ihnen: »Bringt eurem Herrn folgenden Bescheid: ›So hat der HERR gesprochen: Fürchte dich nicht vor den Reden, die du gehört hast, mit denen die Diener des Königs von Assyrien mich geschmäht haben!
7Wisse wohl: ich will ihm einen Geist eingeben, daß er, wenn er eine Kunde erhält, in sein Land zurückkehrt, und ich will ihn dann in seinem eigenen Lande durch das Schwert umkommen lassen.‹«
8Als hierauf der Großwesir zurückgekehrt war, fand er den König von Assyrien mit der Belagerung von Libna beschäftigt; er hatte nämlich erfahren, daß jener von Lachis abgezogen war.
9Als (Sanherib) sodann in betreff des äthiopischen Königs Thirhaka die Nachricht erhielt, dieser sei zum Kriege gegen ihn ausgezogen, sandte er nochmals Boten an Hiskia und ließ ihm sagen:
10»Folgende Botschaft sollt ihr dem König Hiskia von Juda überbringen: Laß dich nicht von deinem Gott täuschen, auf den du dein Vertrauen setzt, indem du meinst: ›Jerusalem wird nicht in die Gewalt des Königs von Assyrien fallen!‹
11Du hast doch selbst gehört, wie die Könige von Assyrien mit allen Ländern verfahren sind, indem sie den Bann an ihnen vollstreckten, und da solltest du gerettet werden?
12Haben etwa die Götter der Völkerschaften, welche meine Väter vernichtet haben, diese Völker errettet: Gosan, Haran und Rezeph und die Bewohner von Eden in Thelassar?
13Wo ist der König von Hamath, der König von Arpad und der König von Lair und Sepharwaim, von Hena und Iwwa?«
14Als nun Hiskia das Schreiben aus der Hand der Gesandten in Empfang genommen und es gelesen hatte, ging er in den Tempel des HERRN hinauf und breitete es dort vor dem HERRN aus.
15Alsdann betete Hiskia vor dem HERRN mit den Worten: »HERR, Gott Israels, der du über den Cheruben thronst! Du allein bist der Gott über alle Reiche auf Erden; du bist’s, der Himmel und Erde geschaffen hat!
16Neige, HERR, dein Ohr und höre! Öffne deine Augen, HERR, und blicke her! Ja, höre die Worte, die Sanherib hier hat sagen lassen, um den lebendigen Gott zu verhöhnen!
17Es ist allerdings wahr, HERR, daß die Könige von Assyrien die Völkerschaften und ihr Land verwüstet
18und deren Götter ins Feuer geworfen haben; aber das waren auch keine Götter, sondern nur Machwerk von Menschenhänden, Holz und Stein: die konnten sie vernichten.
19Nun aber, HERR, unser Gott, rette uns doch aus seiner Hand, damit alle Reiche auf Erden erkennen, daß du, HERR, allein Gott bist!«
20Da sandte Jesaja, der Sohn des Amoz, zu Hiskia und ließ ihm sagen: »So hat der HERR, der Gott Israels, gesprochen: ›Was das Gebet betrifft, das du wegen Sanheribs, des Königs von Assyrien, an mich gerichtet hast, so habe ich es gehört.‹
21Folgenden Ausspruch hat der HERR über ihn getan: ›Es verachtet dich, es spottet deiner die jungfräuliche Tochter Zion; hinter dir her schüttelt das Haupt die Tochter Jerusalem!
22Wen hast du geschmäht und gelästert und gegen wen deine Stimme erhoben und deine Augen hochmütig emporgerichtet? Gegen den Heiligen Israels!
23Durch den Mund deiner Gesandten hast du den HERRN geschmäht und hast gesagt: Mit meiner Kriegswagen Menge ersteige ich die Höhen der Berge, den obersten Gipfel des Libanon; ich haue nieder den Hochwald seiner Zedern, die Auslese seiner Zypressen, und dringe vor bis zu seinem obersten Gipfel, in seinen dichtesten Baumgarten.
24Ich grabe den Erdboden auf und trinke Wasser und mache andrerseits mit der Sohle meiner Füße versiegen alle Nilarme Ägyptens! –
25Hast du es nicht gehört? Von lange her habe ich es festgesetzt und seit den Tagen der Vorzeit es vorbereitet, nunmehr aber es eintreten lassen, daß du feste Städte zu wüsten Steinhaufen verheeren solltest,
26und ihre Bewohner, deren Arm zu kurz war, sollten erschreckt dastehen und zuschanden werden, sollten wie Kraut des Feldes und grünender Rasen sein, wie Gras auf den Dächern und wie Getreide, das versengt ist, ehe es aufschießt.
27Mir ist dein Aufstehen und dein Sitzen offenbar, dein Gehen und Kommen kenne ich wohl, auch dein Toben wider mich.
28Weil du nun wider mich tobst und dein Großtun zu meinen Ohren aufgestiegen ist, will ich dir meinen Ring in die Nase legen und meinen Zaum an deine Lippen und will dich auf dem Wege zurückkehren lassen, auf dem du hergekommen bist.‹
29Folgendes aber möge dir, Hiskia, als Wahrzeichen dienen: In diesem Jahr wird man den Brachwuchs essen und im nächsten Jahre den Wurzelwuchs; im dritten Jahre aber sollt ihr säen und ernten, sollt ihr Weinberge anlegen und ihren Ertrag genießen.
30Was dann vom Hause Juda entronnen und als Rest übriggeblieben ist, wird aufs neue unten Wurzel treiben und oben Früchte tragen;
31denn von Jerusalem wird ein Überrest ausgehen und eine Schar Entronnener vom Berge Zion; der Eifer des HERRN der Heerscharen wird dies vollführen!
32Darum hat der HERR in bezug auf den König von Assyrien so gesprochen: ›Er soll nicht in diese Stadt hineinkommen und keinen Pfeil hineinschießen; er soll mit keinem Schild gegen sie anrücken und keinen Wall gegen sie aufführen!
33Nein, auf dem Wege, auf dem er gekommen ist, soll er zurückkehren und in diese Stadt nicht eindringen!‹ – so lautet der Ausspruch des HERRN.
34›Ja, ich will diese Stadt beschirmen, um sie zu erretten, um meiner selbst willen und um meines Knechtes David willen!‹«
35In derselben Nacht aber ging der Engel des HERRN aus und ließ im Lager der Assyrer 185000 Mann sterben; und als man am Morgen früh aufstand, fand man sie alle tot als Leichen vor.
36Da brach Sanherib, der König von Assyrien, auf und zog ab; er kehrte nach Hause zurück und nahm seinen Wohnsitz in Ninive.
37Als er aber dort (einmal) im Tempel seines Gottes Nisroch anbetete, erschlugen ihn seine Söhne Adrammelech und Sarezer mit dem Schwert; sie entflohen dann ins Land Ararat, und sein Sohn Esarhaddon folgte ihm als König in der Regierung nach.

1Y COMO el rey Ezechîas lo oyó, rasgó sus vestidos, y cubrióse de saco, y entróse en la casa de Jehová.
2Y envió á Eliacim el mayordomo, y á Sebna escriba, y á los ancianos de los sacerdotes, vestidos de sacos á Isaías profeta hijo de Amós,
3Que le dijesen: Así ha dicho Ezechîas: Este día es día de angustia, y de reprensión, y de blasfemia; porque los hijos han venido hasta la rotura, y la que pare no tiene fuerzas.
4Quizá oirá Jehová tu Dios todas las palabras de Rabsaces, al cual el rey de los Asirios su señor ha enviado para injuriar al Dios vivo, y á vituperar con palabras, las cuales Jehová tu Dios ha oído: por tanto, eleva oración por las reliquias que aun se hallan.
5Vinieron pues los siervos del rey Ezechîas á Isaías.
6E Isaías les respondió: Así diréis á vuestro señor: Así ha dicho Jehová; No temas por las palabras que has oído, con las cuales me han blasfemado los siervos del rey de Asiria.
7He aquí pondré yo en él un espíritu, y oirá rumor, y volveráse á su tierra: y yo haré que en su tierra caiga á cuchillo.
8Y regresando Rabsaces, halló al rey de Asiria combatiendo á Libna; porque había oído que se había partido de Lachîs.
9Y oyó decir de Thiraca rey de Ethiopía: He aquí es salido para hacerte guerra. Entonces volvió él, y envió embajadores á Ezechîas, diciendo:
10Así diréis á Ezechîas rey de Judá: No te engañe tu Dios en quien tú confías, para decir: Jerusalem no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria.
11He aquí tú has oído lo que han hecho los reyes de Asiria á todas las tierras, destruyéndolas; ¿y has tú de escapar?
12¿Libráronlas los dioses de las gentes, que mis padres destruyeron, es á saber, Gozán, y Harán, y Reseph, y los hijos de Edén que estaban en Thalasar?
13¿Dónde está el rey de Hamath, el rey de Arphad, el rey de la ciudad de Sepharvaim, de Hena, y de Hiva?
14Y tomó Ezechîas las letras de mano de los embajadores; y después que las hubo leído, subió á la casa de Jehová, y extendiólas Ezechîas delante de Jehová.
15Y oró Ezechîas delante de Jehová, diciendo: Jehová Dios de Israel, que habitas entre los querubines, tú solo eres Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra; tú hiciste el cielo y la tierra.
16Inclina, oh Jehová, tu oído, y oye; abre, oh Jehová, tus ojos, y mira: y oye las palabras de Sennachêrib, que ha enviado á blasfemar al Dios viviente.
17Es verdad, oh Jehová, que los reyes de Asiria han destruído las gentes y sus tierras;
18Y que pusieron en el fuego á sus dioses, por cuanto ellos no eran dioses, sino obra de manos de hombres, madera ó piedra, y así los destruyeron.
19Ahora pues, oh Jehová Dios nuestro, sálvanos, te suplico, de su mano, para que sepan todos los reinos de la tierra que tú solo, Jehová, eres Dios.
20Entonces Isaías hijo de Amós envió á decir á Ezechîas: Así ha dicho Jehová, Dios de Israel: Lo que me rogaste acerca de Sennachêrib rey de Asiria, he oído.
21Esta es la palabra que Jehová ha hablado contra él: Hate menospreciado, hate escarnecido la virgen hija de Sión; ha movido su cabeza detrás de ti la hija de Jerusalem.
22¿A quién has injuriado y á quién has blasfemado? ¿y contra quién has hablado alto, y has alzado en alto tus ojos? Contra el Santo de Israel.
23Por mano de tus mensajeros has proferido injuria contra el Señor, y has dicho: Con la multitud de mis carros he subido á las cumbres de los montes, á las cuestas del Líbano; y cortaré sus altos cedros, sus hayas escogidas; y entraré á la morada de su término, al monte de su Carmel.
24Yo he cavado y bebido las aguas ajenas, y he secado con las plantas de mis pies todos los ríos de lugares bloqueados.
25¿Nunca has oído que mucho tiempo ha yo lo hice, y de días antiguos lo he formado? Y ahora lo he hecho venir, y fué para desolación de ciudades fuertes en montones de ruinas.
26Y sus moradores, cortos de manos, quebrantados y confusos, fueron cual hierba del campo, como legumbre verde, y heno de los tejados, que antes que venga á madurez es seco.
27Yo he sabido tu asentarte, tu salir y tu entrar, y tu furor contra mí.
28Por cuanto te has airado contra mí, y tu estruendo ha subido á mis oídos, yo por tanto pondré mi anzuelo en tus narices, y mi bocado en tus labios, y te haré volver por el camino por donde viniste.
29Y esto te será por señal Ezechîas: Este año comerás lo que nacerá de suyo, y el segundo año lo que nacerá de suyo; y el tercer año haréis sementera, y segaréis, y plantaréis viñas, y comeréis el fruto de ellas.
30Y lo que hubiere escapado, lo que habrá quedado de la casa de Judá, tornará á echar raíz abajo, y hará fruto arriba.
31Porque saldrán de Jerusalem reliquias, y los que escaparán, del monte de Sión: el celo de Jehová de los ejércitos hará esto.
32Por tanto, Jehová dice así del rey de Asiria: No entrará en esta ciudad, ni echará saeta en ella; ni vendrá delante de ella escudo, ni será echado contra ella baluarte.
33Por el camino que vino se volverá, y no entrará en esta ciudad, dice Jehová.
34Porque yo ampararé á esta ciudad para salvarla, por amor de mí, y por amor de David mi siervo.
35Y aconteció que la misma noche salió el ángel de Jehová, é hirió en el campo de los Asirios ciento ochenta y cinco mil; y como se levantaron por la mañana, he aquí los cuerpos de los muertos.
36Entonces Sennachêrib, rey de Asiria se partió, y se fué y tornó á Nínive, donde se estuvo.
37Y aconteció que, estando él adorando en el templo de Nisroch su dios, Adramelech y Saresar sus hijos lo hirieron á cuchillo; y huyéronse á tierra de Ararat. Y reinó en su lugar Esar-hadón su hijo.

1And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.
2And he sent Eliakim, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
3And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
4It may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that are left.
5So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
6And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
7Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
8So Rab-shakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
9And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against thee: he sent messengers again unto Hezekiah, saying,
10Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
11Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered?
12Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed; as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Thelasar?
13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivah?
14And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.
15And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.
16LORD, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, LORD, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God.
17Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands,
18And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
19Now therefore, O LORD our God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD God, even thou only.
20Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.
21This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.
22Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
23By thy messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down the tall cedar trees thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his Carmel.
24I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places.
25Hast thou not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient times that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste fenced cities into ruinous heaps.
26Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.
27But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.
28Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
29And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof.
30And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.
31For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.
32Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.
33By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.
34For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.
35And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
36So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.
37And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.

1When King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the LORD’s house.
2He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
3They said to him, “Hezekiah says, ‘Today is a day of trouble, of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them.
4It may be the LORD your God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’”
5So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
6Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master this: ‘The LORD says, “Don’t be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
7Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he will hear news, and will return to his own land. I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.”’”
8So Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish.
9When he heard it said of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, “Behold, he has come out to fight against you,” he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,
10“Tell Hezekiah king of Judah this: ‘Don’t let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.
11Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. Will you be delivered?
12Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed—Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the children of Eden who were in Telassar?
13Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?’”
14Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to the LORD’s house, and spread it before the LORD.
15Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, “LORD, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.
16Incline your ear, LORD, and hear. Open your eyes, LORD, and see. Hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to defy the living God.
17Truly, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,
18and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they have destroyed them.
19Now therefore, LORD our God, save us, I beg you, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, LORD, are God alone.”
20Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “The LORD, the God of Israel, says ‘You have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, and I have heard you.
21This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him: ‘The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.
22Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel!
23By your messengers, you have defied the Lord, and have said, “With the multitude of my chariots, I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon, and I will cut down its tall cedars and its choice cypress trees; and I will enter into his farthest lodging place, the forest of his fruitful field.
24I have dug and drunk strange waters, and I will dry up all the rivers of Egypt with the sole of my feet.”
25Haven’t you heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? Now I have brought it to pass, that it should be yours to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.
26Therefore their inhabitants had little power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops and like grain blasted before it has grown up.
27But I know your sitting down, your going out, your coming in, and your raging against me.
28Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.’
29“This will be the sign to you: This year, you will eat that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs from that; and in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
30The remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah will again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.
31For out of Jerusalem a remnant will go out, and out of Mount Zion those who shall escape. The LORD’s zeal will perform this.
32“Therefore the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria, ‘He will not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there. He will not come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.
33He will return the same way that he came, and he will not come to this city,’ says the LORD.
34‘For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for my servant David’s sake.’”
35That night, the LORD’s angel went out and struck one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.
36So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, went home, and lived at Nineveh.
37As he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.
