1Als der König Ezechias es hörte, zerriß er seine Gewänder, hüllte sich in ein Bußgewand und ging in das Haus des Herrn.
2Dann sandte er Eljakim, den Hausvorstand, den Schreiber Sebna und die Ältesten der Priester, in Bußgewänder gehüllt, zu dem Propheten Isaias, des Amos Sohn.
3Sie sprachen zu ihm: "So spricht Ezechias: 'Ein Tag der Not und schmählicher Züchtigung ist dieser Tag. Denn Kinder kommen an den Durchbruch; da fehlt die Kraft, sie zu gebären.
4Vielleicht hört der Herr, dein Gott, auf alle die Reden des Rabsake, den sein Herr, der Assyrerkönig, gesandt, den lebendigen Gott zu lästern, und zeigt durch Worte, daß der Herr, dein Gott, es gehört hat. So leg Fürsprache für den noch vorhandenen Überrest ein!'"
5Des Ezechias Diener kamen also zu Isaias.
6Da sprach Isaias zu ihnen: "Sprecht so zu eurem Herrn! So spricht der Herr: 'Hab keine Angst der Reden wegen, die du angehört hast, mit denen die Knechte des Assyrerkönigs mich gelästert haben!
7Ich gebe ihm einen Geist ein, so daß er eine Kunde hört; dann geht er in sein Land zurück. Ich fälle ihn durch das Schwert in seinem Land.'"
8Darauf kehrte Rabsake zurück und traf den Assyrerkönig bei der Belagerung von Libna. Er hatte nämlich gehört, er sei von Lakis aufgebrochen.
9Und jener hörte von Tirhaka, dem König von Äthiopien: "Er zieht aus, mit dir zu kämpfen." Da sandte er abermals Boten an Ezechias und ließ ihm sagen:
10"So sprecht zum Judakönig Ezechias: 'Daß dich dein Gott nicht täusche, auf den du vertraust, und so denkst: Jerusalem wird nicht in des Assyrerkönigs Hand gegeben!
11Du hast selbst gehört, wie die Assyrerkönige allen Ländern getan und sie gebannt haben. Und du willst gerettet werden?
12Wurden die Heiden, die meine Väter vernichtet haben, von ihren Göttern gerettet? Gozan, Charan, Reseph und die Söhne Edens zu Telassar?
13Wo ist der König von Hamat, der König von Arpad, der König der Stadt Sepharvaim, der von Hena und von Eva?'"
14Ezechias nahm den Brief aus der Hand des Boten und las ihn. Dann ging er in das Haus des Herrn. Hier breitete ihn Ezechias vor dem Herrn aus.
15Dann betete Ezechias also zum Herrn: "Herr der Heerscharen, Gott Israels, der Du thronst über Cheruben! Nur Du allein bist Gott für alle Erdenreiche. Du hast den Himmel und die Erde gemacht.
16Neige, Herr, Dein Ohr und höre! Herr! Öffne Deine Augen! Schau darein. Merk auf die Worte Sanheribs, die er verlauten ließ, um den lebendigen Gott zu lästern!
17Wahr ist es, Herr: Die Könige von Assur haben alle Länder stark verheert
18und ihre Götter in das Feuer geworfen. Denn das waren keine Götter, nur Werk von Menschenhänden, Holz und Stein. So konnte man sie leicht vernichten.
19Nun aber Herr, Du unser Gott! Errette uns aus seiner Hand, damit alle Reiche der Erde sehen, daß Du allein der Herr bist!"
20Da sandte Isaias, des Amos Sohn, zu Ezechias und ließ sagen: "So spricht der Herr, Israels Gott: 'Was du gebetet wegen Sanherib, des Königs von Assyrien, das habe ich gehört.'
21Dies ist das Wort, das über ihn der Herr ausspricht: 'Es spottet deiner und verachtet dich die Jungfrau, Sions Tochter. Es schüttelt hinter dir das Haupt die Tochter von Jerusalem.
22Wen lästerst du? Wen schmähst du? Und gegen wen erhebst du deine Stimme? Du schlugst deine stolzen Augen auf, dem Heiligen Israels zum Trotz.
23Durch deine Knechte sprachest du vermessen von dem Herrn: "Mit meiner starken Reiterei dringe ich hinauf bis zu der Berge höchsten Höhen, selbst auf den höchsten Libanon, und fälle seine höchsten Zedern und seine schönsten Fichten. Ich dringe bis zu seinem höchsten Gipfel, in seine reichsten Waldungen.
24Firngewässer trinke ich zur Kühlung, mit meinem Fuße trete ich die Gletscherströme alle aus."
25Hast du denn nicht gehört, daß ich seit langem dies geplant, von alten Zeiten her bestimmt? Jetzt ließ ich Ähnliches geschehen, und so warst du imstande, feste Städte in Trümmerhaufen zu verwandeln.
26Und die in ihnen wohnten, für die Verteidigung zu schwach, erzitterten und bebten und wurden wie das Gras des Feldes, wie zartes Grün, wie Hälmchen auf den Dächern und wie vermengtes, unreifes Korn.
27Bekannt ist mir dein Aufstehen und dein Niedersitzen. Dein Gehen und dein Kommen kenne ich gut, und auch dein Toben gegen mich.
28Dein Toben und dein Ungestüm kam mir zu Ohren. So lege ich denn meinen Ring in deine Nase und meinen Zaum in deine Lippen und führe dich auf gleichem Wege heim, auf dem du hergekommen bist.'
29Dies diene dir als Zeichen! In diesem Jahre iß, was von selber wächst! Im zweiten Jahre, was aus den Wurzeln wächst! Im dritten Jahre aber sät und erntet wieder und pflanzet Weinberge! Genießet ihre Früchte!
30Der gerettete Rest des Hauses Juda treibt in die Tiefe Wurzeln und trägt oben Früchte.
31Denn aufblüht in Jerusalem ein Rest und ein gerettet Häuflein auf dem Sionsberg. Der Eifer des Herrn der Heerscharen tut dies.
32Darum spricht der Herr über den Assyrerkönig so: 'Er kommt nicht in diese Stadt und schießt keinen Pfeil hinein, hält ihr keinen Schild entgegen und wirft keinen Wall um sie.
33Auf dem Wege, den er kam, kehrt er um. Er kommt nicht in diese Stadt.' Ein Spruch des Herrn:
34'Ich schirme diese Stadt und helfe ihr um meiner selbst und meines Dieners David willen.'"
35In der gleichen Nacht ging des Herrn Engel aus und schlug im Assyrerlager 185.000 Mann. Am anderen Morgen waren sie alle Leichen, Tote.
36Der Assyrerkönig Sanherib brach auf und zog ab. Er kehrte heim und blieb in Ninive.
37Als er im Hause seines Gottes Nisroch betete, schlugen ihn seine Söhne Adarmelech und Sareser mit dem Schwert. Sie flohen ins Land Ararat, und sein Sohn Asarhaddon ward an seiner Statt König.

1Y COMO el rey Ezechîas lo oyó, rasgó sus vestidos, y cubrióse de saco, y entróse en la casa de Jehová.
2Y envió á Eliacim el mayordomo, y á Sebna escriba, y á los ancianos de los sacerdotes, vestidos de sacos á Isaías profeta hijo de Amós,
3Que le dijesen: Así ha dicho Ezechîas: Este día es día de angustia, y de reprensión, y de blasfemia; porque los hijos han venido hasta la rotura, y la que pare no tiene fuerzas.
4Quizá oirá Jehová tu Dios todas las palabras de Rabsaces, al cual el rey de los Asirios su señor ha enviado para injuriar al Dios vivo, y á vituperar con palabras, las cuales Jehová tu Dios ha oído: por tanto, eleva oración por las reliquias que aun se hallan.
5Vinieron pues los siervos del rey Ezechîas á Isaías.
6E Isaías les respondió: Así diréis á vuestro señor: Así ha dicho Jehová; No temas por las palabras que has oído, con las cuales me han blasfemado los siervos del rey de Asiria.
7He aquí pondré yo en él un espíritu, y oirá rumor, y volveráse á su tierra: y yo haré que en su tierra caiga á cuchillo.
8Y regresando Rabsaces, halló al rey de Asiria combatiendo á Libna; porque había oído que se había partido de Lachîs.
9Y oyó decir de Thiraca rey de Ethiopía: He aquí es salido para hacerte guerra. Entonces volvió él, y envió embajadores á Ezechîas, diciendo:
10Así diréis á Ezechîas rey de Judá: No te engañe tu Dios en quien tú confías, para decir: Jerusalem no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria.
11He aquí tú has oído lo que han hecho los reyes de Asiria á todas las tierras, destruyéndolas; ¿y has tú de escapar?
12¿Libráronlas los dioses de las gentes, que mis padres destruyeron, es á saber, Gozán, y Harán, y Reseph, y los hijos de Edén que estaban en Thalasar?
13¿Dónde está el rey de Hamath, el rey de Arphad, el rey de la ciudad de Sepharvaim, de Hena, y de Hiva?
14Y tomó Ezechîas las letras de mano de los embajadores; y después que las hubo leído, subió á la casa de Jehová, y extendiólas Ezechîas delante de Jehová.
15Y oró Ezechîas delante de Jehová, diciendo: Jehová Dios de Israel, que habitas entre los querubines, tú solo eres Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra; tú hiciste el cielo y la tierra.
16Inclina, oh Jehová, tu oído, y oye; abre, oh Jehová, tus ojos, y mira: y oye las palabras de Sennachêrib, que ha enviado á blasfemar al Dios viviente.
17Es verdad, oh Jehová, que los reyes de Asiria han destruído las gentes y sus tierras;
18Y que pusieron en el fuego á sus dioses, por cuanto ellos no eran dioses, sino obra de manos de hombres, madera ó piedra, y así los destruyeron.
19Ahora pues, oh Jehová Dios nuestro, sálvanos, te suplico, de su mano, para que sepan todos los reinos de la tierra que tú solo, Jehová, eres Dios.
20Entonces Isaías hijo de Amós envió á decir á Ezechîas: Así ha dicho Jehová, Dios de Israel: Lo que me rogaste acerca de Sennachêrib rey de Asiria, he oído.
21Esta es la palabra que Jehová ha hablado contra él: Hate menospreciado, hate escarnecido la virgen hija de Sión; ha movido su cabeza detrás de ti la hija de Jerusalem.
22¿A quién has injuriado y á quién has blasfemado? ¿y contra quién has hablado alto, y has alzado en alto tus ojos? Contra el Santo de Israel.
23Por mano de tus mensajeros has proferido injuria contra el Señor, y has dicho: Con la multitud de mis carros he subido á las cumbres de los montes, á las cuestas del Líbano; y cortaré sus altos cedros, sus hayas escogidas; y entraré á la morada de su término, al monte de su Carmel.
24Yo he cavado y bebido las aguas ajenas, y he secado con las plantas de mis pies todos los ríos de lugares bloqueados.
25¿Nunca has oído que mucho tiempo ha yo lo hice, y de días antiguos lo he formado? Y ahora lo he hecho venir, y fué para desolación de ciudades fuertes en montones de ruinas.
26Y sus moradores, cortos de manos, quebrantados y confusos, fueron cual hierba del campo, como legumbre verde, y heno de los tejados, que antes que venga á madurez es seco.
27Yo he sabido tu asentarte, tu salir y tu entrar, y tu furor contra mí.
28Por cuanto te has airado contra mí, y tu estruendo ha subido á mis oídos, yo por tanto pondré mi anzuelo en tus narices, y mi bocado en tus labios, y te haré volver por el camino por donde viniste.
29Y esto te será por señal Ezechîas: Este año comerás lo que nacerá de suyo, y el segundo año lo que nacerá de suyo; y el tercer año haréis sementera, y segaréis, y plantaréis viñas, y comeréis el fruto de ellas.
30Y lo que hubiere escapado, lo que habrá quedado de la casa de Judá, tornará á echar raíz abajo, y hará fruto arriba.
31Porque saldrán de Jerusalem reliquias, y los que escaparán, del monte de Sión: el celo de Jehová de los ejércitos hará esto.
32Por tanto, Jehová dice así del rey de Asiria: No entrará en esta ciudad, ni echará saeta en ella; ni vendrá delante de ella escudo, ni será echado contra ella baluarte.
33Por el camino que vino se volverá, y no entrará en esta ciudad, dice Jehová.
34Porque yo ampararé á esta ciudad para salvarla, por amor de mí, y por amor de David mi siervo.
35Y aconteció que la misma noche salió el ángel de Jehová, é hirió en el campo de los Asirios ciento ochenta y cinco mil; y como se levantaron por la mañana, he aquí los cuerpos de los muertos.
36Entonces Sennachêrib, rey de Asiria se partió, y se fué y tornó á Nínive, donde se estuvo.
37Y aconteció que, estando él adorando en el templo de Nisroch su dios, Adramelech y Saresar sus hijos lo hirieron á cuchillo; y huyéronse á tierra de Ararat. Y reinó en su lugar Esar-hadón su hijo.

1And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.
2And he sent Eliakim, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
3And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
4It may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that are left.
5So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
6And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
7Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
8So Rab-shakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
9And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against thee: he sent messengers again unto Hezekiah, saying,
10Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
11Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered?
12Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed; as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Thelasar?
13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivah?
14And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.
15And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.
16LORD, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, LORD, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God.
17Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands,
18And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
19Now therefore, O LORD our God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD God, even thou only.
20Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.
21This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.
22Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
23By thy messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down the tall cedar trees thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his Carmel.
24I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places.
25Hast thou not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient times that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste fenced cities into ruinous heaps.
26Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.
27But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.
28Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
29And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof.
30And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.
31For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.
32Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.
33By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.
34For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.
35And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
36So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.
37And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.

1When King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the LORD’s house.
2He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
3They said to him, “Hezekiah says, ‘Today is a day of trouble, of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them.
4It may be the LORD your God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’”
5So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
6Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master this: ‘The LORD says, “Don’t be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
7Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he will hear news, and will return to his own land. I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.”’”
8So Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish.
9When he heard it said of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, “Behold, he has come out to fight against you,” he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,
10“Tell Hezekiah king of Judah this: ‘Don’t let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.
11Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. Will you be delivered?
12Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed—Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the children of Eden who were in Telassar?
13Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?’”
14Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to the LORD’s house, and spread it before the LORD.
15Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, “LORD, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.
16Incline your ear, LORD, and hear. Open your eyes, LORD, and see. Hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to defy the living God.
17Truly, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,
18and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they have destroyed them.
19Now therefore, LORD our God, save us, I beg you, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, LORD, are God alone.”
20Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “The LORD, the God of Israel, says ‘You have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, and I have heard you.
21This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him: ‘The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.
22Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel!
23By your messengers, you have defied the Lord, and have said, “With the multitude of my chariots, I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon, and I will cut down its tall cedars and its choice cypress trees; and I will enter into his farthest lodging place, the forest of his fruitful field.
24I have dug and drunk strange waters, and I will dry up all the rivers of Egypt with the sole of my feet.”
25Haven’t you heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? Now I have brought it to pass, that it should be yours to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.
26Therefore their inhabitants had little power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops and like grain blasted before it has grown up.
27But I know your sitting down, your going out, your coming in, and your raging against me.
28Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.’
29“This will be the sign to you: This year, you will eat that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs from that; and in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
30The remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah will again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.
31For out of Jerusalem a remnant will go out, and out of Mount Zion those who shall escape. The LORD’s zeal will perform this.
32“Therefore the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria, ‘He will not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there. He will not come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.
33He will return the same way that he came, and he will not come to this city,’ says the LORD.
34‘For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for my servant David’s sake.’”
35That night, the LORD’s angel went out and struck one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.
36So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, went home, and lived at Nineveh.
37As he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.
