1Darauf, im dritten Regierungsjahre Hoseas, des Sohnes Elas, des Königs von Israel, wurde Hiskia König, der Sohn des Königs Ahas von Juda.
2Im Alter von fünfundzwanzig Jahren wurde er König, und neunundzwanzig Jahre regierte er in Jerusalem; seine Mutter hieß Abi und war die Tochter Sacharjas.
3Er tat, was dem HERRN wohlgefiel, ganz so wie sein Ahnherr David getan hatte.
4Er war es, der den Höhendienst abschaffte, die Malsteine zertrümmerte, die Götzenbäume umhieb und die eherne Schlange zerschlug, die Mose angefertigt hatte; denn bis zu dieser Zeit hatten die Israeliten ihr immerfort geopfert, und man nannte sie Nehustan.
5Er setzte sein Vertrauen auf den HERRN, den Gott Israels, so daß unter allen Königen von Juda weder nach ihm noch unter denen, die vor ihm gewesen waren, irgendeiner ihm gleichgekommen ist.
6Er hielt am HERRN fest, ohne von ihm abzuweichen, und beobachtete seine Gebote, die der HERR dem Mose gegeben hatte.
7So war denn auch der HERR mit ihm, so daß er bei allen seinen Unternehmungen Glück hatte. Er fiel auch vom König von Assyrien ab und machte sich unabhängig von ihm.
8Er schlug auch die Philister bis nach Gaza hin, und zwar bis an die Grenze dieser Stadt, vom Wächterturm an bis zur befestigten Stadt.
9Im vierten Regierungsjahre des Königs Hiskia aber – das war das siebte Regierungsjahr des Königs Hosea von Israel, des Sohnes Elas – zog der assyrische König Salmanassar gegen Samaria heran, belagerte es
10und nahm es nach Ablauf von drei Jahren ein; im sechsten Regierungsjahr Hiskias – das war das neunte Regierungsjahr des Königs Hosea von Israel – wurde Samaria erobert.
11Der König von Assyrien führte dann die Israeliten in die Gefangenschaft nach Assyrien und verpflanzte sie nach Halah und an den Habor, den Fluß Gosans, und in die Ortschaften der Meder,
12zur Strafe dafür, daß sie den Weisungen des HERRN, ihres Gottes, nicht nachgekommen waren und seinen Bund übertreten hatten, alles was Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, ihnen geboten hatte: sie hatten weder darauf gehört noch danach getan.
13Im vierzehnten Regierungsjahr des Königs Hiskia aber zog der assyrische König Sanherib gegen alle festen Städte Judas heran und eroberte sie.
14Da schickte der König Hiskia von Juda eine Gesandtschaft an den König von Assyrien nach Lachis und ließ ihm sagen: »Ich habe unrecht getan; ziehe aus meinem Lande wieder ab! Was du mir auferlegst, will ich tragen.« Da legte der König von Assyrien dem Könige Hiskia von Juda die Zahlung von dreihundert Talenten Silber und dreißig Talenten Gold auf;
15und Hiskia gab alles Silber hin, das sich im Tempel des HERRN und in den Schatzkammern des königlichen Palastes vorfand.
16Zu jener Zeit ließ Hiskia von den Türen im Tempel des HERRN und von den Pfeilern, die er selbst mit Goldblech hatte überziehen lassen, das Gold abnehmen und gab es dem König von Assyrien.
17Aber der assyrische König sandte seinen Großwesir und den Oberkämmerer und den Obermundschenk mit einem starken Heere von Lachis aus gegen den König Hiskia nach Jerusalem. Als diese hinaufgezogen und vor Jerusalem angekommen waren, stellten sie sich bei der Wasserleitung des oberen Teiches auf, der an der Straße nach dem Walkerfeld liegt.
18Als sie nun den König zu sprechen verlangten, ging der Hausminister Eljakim, der Sohn Hilkias, mit dem Staatsschreiber Sebna und dem Kanzler Joah, dem Sohne Asaphs, zu ihnen hinaus.
19Da sagte der Obermundschenk zu ihnen: »Berichtet dem Hiskia: So hat der Großkönig, der König von Assyrien, gesprochen: ›Worauf beruht denn das feste Vertrauen, das du hegst?
20Meinst du etwa, der Verlauf und Ausgang eines Krieges hänge lediglich von Worten ab? Auf wen verläßt du dich eigentlich, daß du dich gegen mich empört hast?
21Nun ja, du verläßt dich auf Ägypten, auf diesen eingeknickten Rohrstab, der jedem, welcher sich darauf stützt, in die Hand fährt und sie durchbohrt: so erweist sich nämlich der Pharao, der König von Ägypten, allen denen, die sich auf ihn verlassen.
22Wenn ihr mir aber entgegnen wollt: Auf den HERRN, unsern Gott, verlassen wir uns! – ist das nicht derselbe, dessen Höhen(- dienst) und Altäre Hiskia beseitigt hat, als er in Juda und Jerusalem den Befehl erließ: Nur vor dem Altar hier in Jerusalem dürft ihr euch niederwerfen?
23Und nun, gehe doch mit meinem Herrn, dem König von Assyrien, eine Wette ein: ich will dir zweitausend Pferde liefern, ob du wohl imstande bist, die Reiter für sie aufzubringen!
24Wie willst du da den Kampf mit einem einzigen Befehlshaber von den geringsten Dienern meines Herrn aufnehmen? Und doch verläßt du dich auf Ägypten um der Wagen und Reiter willen!
25Zudem: bin ich etwa ohne Zutun des HERRN, eures Gottes, gegen diesen Ort herangezogen, um ihn zu verheeren? Der HERR selbst hat mich aufgefordert, gegen dieses Land zu ziehen und es zu verheeren!‹«
26Hierauf sagten Eljakim, der Sohn Hilkias, und Sebna und Joah zu dem Obermundschenk: »Sprich doch aramäisch mit deinen Knechten, denn wir verstehen es, und sprich nicht judäisch mit uns vor den Ohren des Volkes, das auf der Mauer steht!«
27Aber der Obermundschenk erwiderte ihnen: »Hat mich mein Herr etwa nur zu deinem Herrn und zu dir gesandt, um diese Verhandlungen zu führen, und nicht auch zu den Männern, die dort auf der Mauer sitzen, um schließlich mit euch zusammen ihren eigenen Kot zu verzehren und ihren Harn zu trinken?«
28Hierauf trat der Obermundschenk vor und rief mit gehobener Stimme auf judäisch die Worte aus: »Vernehmt die Botschaft des Großkönigs, des Königs von Assyrien!
29So läßt euch der König sagen: ›Laßt euch von Hiskia nicht täuschen! Denn er vermag euch nicht aus meiner Gewalt zu erretten;
30auch laßt euch von Hiskia nicht auf Gott den HERRN vertrösten, wenn er sagt: Gott der HERR wird uns sicherlich erretten, und unsere Stadt wird nicht in die Hand des Königs von Assyrien fallen!
31Hört nicht auf Hiskia! Denn so läßt euch der König von Assyrien sagen: Schließt Frieden mit mir und ergebt euch mir! Dann sollt ihr ein jeder von seinem eigenen Weinstock und seinem eigenen Feigenbaum essen und ein jeder das Wasser aus seiner eigenen Zisterne trinken,
32bis ich komme, um euch in ein Land mitzunehmen, das gleich dem eurigen ist, ein Land voll von Getreide und Most, ein Land voll von Brot und Weinbergen, ein Land voll von Ölbäumen und Honig, damit ihr am Leben bleibt und nicht zu sterben braucht. Aber hört nicht auf Hiskia! Denn er will euch nur betören, wenn er sagt: Gott der HERR wird uns erretten!
33Hat etwa von den Göttern der anderen Völker irgendeiner sein Land aus der Gewalt des Königs von Assyrien gerettet?
34Wo sind die Götter von Hamath und Arpad? Wo die Götter von Sepharwaim, von Hena und Iwwa? Und ebensowenig haben sie Samaria aus meiner Gewalt gerettet.
35Wo ist unter allen Göttern der Länder ein einziger, der sein Land aus meiner Gewalt gerettet hätte, daß jetzt Gott der HERR Jerusalem aus meiner Gewalt erretten sollte?‹«
36Da schwieg das Volk still und antwortete ihm kein Wort; denn es lag ein Befehl des Königs vor, der geboten hatte: »Ihr sollt ihm nicht antworten!« –
37Hierauf kehrten der Hausminister Eljakim, der Sohn Hilkias, und der Staatsschreiber Sebna und der Kanzler Joah, der Sohn Asaphs, mit zerrissenen Kleidern zu Hiskia zurück und berichteten ihm, was der Obermundschenk gesagt hatte.

1EN el tercer año de Oseas hijo de Ela rey de Israel, comenzó á reinar Ezechîas hijo de Achâz rey de Judá.
2Cuando comenzó á reinar era de veinticinco años, y reinó en Jerusalem veintinueve años. El nombre de su madre fué Abi hija de Zachârías.
3Hizo lo recto en ojos de Jehová, conforme á todas las cosas que había hecho David su padre.
4El quitó los altos, y quebró las imágenes, y taló los bosques, é hizo pedazos la serpiente de bronce que había hecho Moisés, porque hasta entonces le quemaban perfumes los hijos de Israel; y llamóle por nombre Nehustán.
5En Jehová Dios de Israel puso su esperanza: después ni antes de él no hubo otro como él en todos los reyes de Judá.
6Porque se llegó á Jehová, y no se apartó de él, sino que guardó los mandamientos que Jehová prescribió á Moisés.
7Y Jehová fué con él; y en todas las cosas á que salía prosperaba. El se rebeló contra el rey de Asiria, y no le sirvió.
8Hirió también á los Filisteos hasta Gaza y sus términos, desde las torres de las atalayas hasta la ciudad fortalecida.
9En el cuarto año del rey Ezechîas, que era el año séptimo de Oseas hijo de Ela rey de Israel, subió Salmanasar rey de los Asirios contra Samaria, y cercóla.
10Y tomáronla al cabo de tres años; esto es, en el sexto año de Ezechîas, el cual era el año nono de Oseas rey de Israel, fué Samaria tomada.
11Y el rey de Asiria traspuso á Israel á Asiria, y púsolos en Hala, y en Habor, junto al río de Gozán, y en las ciudades de los Medos:
12Por cuanto no habían atendido la voz de Jehová su Dios, antes habían quebrantado su pacto; y todas las cosas que Moisés siervo de Jehová había mandado, ni las habían escuchado, ni puesto por obra.
13Y á los catorce años del rey Ezechîas, subió Sennachêrib rey de Asiria contra todas las ciudades fuertes de Judá, y tomólas.
14Entonces Ezechîas rey de Judá envió á decir al rey de Asiria en Lachîs: Yo he pecado: vuélvete de mí, y llevaré todo lo que me impusieres. Y el rey de Asiria impuso á Ezechîas rey de Judá trescientos talentos de plata, y treinta talentos de oro.
15Dió por tanto Ezechîas toda la plata que fué hallada en la casa de Jehová, y en los tesoros de la casa real.
16Entonces descompuso Ezechîas las puertas del templo de Jehová, y los quiciales que el mismo rey Ezechîas había cubierto de oro, y diólo al rey de Asiria.
17Después el rey de Asiria envió al rey Ezechîas, desde Lachîs contra Jerusalem, á Thartán y á Rabsaris y á Rabsaces, con un grande ejército: y subieron, y vinieron á Jerusalem. Y habiendo subido, vinieron y pararon junto al conducto del estanque de arriba, que es en el camino de la heredad del batanero.
18Llamaron luego al rey, y salió á ellos Eliacim hijo de Hilcías, que era mayordomo, y Sebna escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph, canciller.
19Y díjoles Rabsaces: Decid ahora á Ezechîas: Así dice el gran rey de Asiria: ¿Qué confianza es esta en que tú estás?
20Dices, (por cierto palabras de labios): Consejo tengo y esfuerzo para la guerra. Mas ¿en qué confías, que te has rebelado contra mí?
21He aquí tú confías ahora en este bordón de caña cascada, en Egipto, en el que si alguno se apoyare, entrarále por la mano, y se le pasará. Tal es Faraón rey de Egipto, para todos los que en él confían.
22Y si me decís: Nosotros confiamos en Jehová nuestro Dios: ¿no es aquél cuyos altos y altares ha quitado Ezechîas, y ha dicho á Judá y á Jerusalem: Delante de este altar adoraréis en Jerusalem?
23Por tanto, ahora yo te ruego que des rehenes á mi señor, el rey de Asiria, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si tú pudieres dar jinetes para ellos.
24¿Cómo pues harás volver el rostro de un capitán el menor de los siervos de mi señor, aunque estés confiado en Egipto por sus carros y su gente de á caballo?
25Además, ¿he venido yo ahora sin Jehová á este lugar, para destruirlo? Jehová me ha dicho: Sube á esta tierra, y destrúyela.
26Entonces dijo Eliacim hijo de Hilcías, y Sebna y Joah, á Rabsaces: Ruégote que hables á tus siervos siriaco, porque nosotros lo entendemos, y no hables con nosotros judaico á oídos del pueblo que está sobre el muro.
27Y Rabsaces les dijo: ¿Hame enviado mi señor á ti y á tu señor para decir estas palabras, y no antes á los hombres que están sobre el muro, para comer su estiércol, y beber el agua de sus pies con vosotros?
28Paróse luego Rabsaces, y clamó á gran voz en judaico, y habló, diciendo: Oid la palabra del gran rey, el rey de Asiria.
29Así ha dicho el rey: No os engañe Ezechîas, porque no os podrá librar de mi mano.
30Y no os haga Ezechîas confiar en Jehová, diciendo: De cierto nos librará Jehová, y esta ciudad no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria.
31No oigáis á Ezechîas, porque así dice el rey de Asiria: Haced conmigo paz, y salid á mí, y cada uno comerá de su vid, y de su higuera, y cada uno beberá las aguas de su pozo;
32Hasta que yo venga, y os lleve á una tierra como la vuestra, tierra de grano y de vino, tierra de pan y de viñas, tierra de olivas, de aceite, y de miel; y viviréis, y no moriréis. No oigáis á Ezechîas, porque os engaña cuando dice: Jehová nos librará.
33¿Acaso alguno de los dioses de las gentes ha librado su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria?
34¿Dónde está el dios de Hamath, y de Arphad? ¿dónde el dios de Sepharvaim, de Hena, y de Hiva? ¿pudieron éstos librar á Samaria de mi mano?
35¿Qué dios de todos los dioses de las provincias ha librado á su provincia de mi mano, para que libre Jehová de mi mano á Jerusalem?
36Y el pueblo calló, que no le respondieron palabra: porque había mandamiento del rey, el cual había dicho: No le respondáis.
37Entonces Eliacim hijo de Hilcías, que era mayordomo, y Sebna el escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph, canciller, vinieron á Ezechîas, rotos sus vestidos, y recitáronle las palabras de Rabsaces.

1Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.
2Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah.
3And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.
4He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.
5He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.
6For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.
7And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.
8He smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.
9And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it.
10And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.
11And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes:
12Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.
13Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.
14And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
15And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house.
16At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.
17And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rab-shakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field.
18And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.
19And Rab-shakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
20Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
21Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.
22But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
23Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
24How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
25Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
26Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
27But Rab-shakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
28Then Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:
29Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:
30Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
31Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:
32Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.
33Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
34Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?
35Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?
36But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
37Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rab-shakeh.

1Now in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.
2He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah.
3He did that which was right in the LORD’s eyes, according to all that David his father had done.
4He removed the high places, broke the pillars, and cut down the Asherah. He also broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, because in those days the children of Israel burned incense to it; and he called it Nehushtan.
5He trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel, so that after him was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, nor among them that were before him.
6For he joined with the LORD. He didn’t depart from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.
7The LORD was with him. Wherever he went, he prospered. He rebelled against the king of Assyria, and didn’t serve him.
8He struck the Philistines to Gaza and its borders, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.

20You say (but they are but vain words), ‘There is counsel and strength for war.’ Now on whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?
21Now, behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt. If a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust on him.
22But if you tell me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ isn’t that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?
23Now therefore, please give pledges to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses if you are able on your part to set riders on them.

27But Rabshakeh said to them, “Has my master sent me to your master and to you, to speak these words? Hasn’t he sent me to the men who sit on the wall, to eat their own dung, and to drink their own urine with you?”
28Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spoke, saying, “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria.
29The king says, ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you out of his hand.
30Don’t let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, “The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”
31Don’t listen to Hezekiah.’ For the king of Assyria says, ‘Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and everyone of you eat from his own vine, and everyone from his own fig tree, and everyone drink water from his own cistern;
32until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and of honey, that you may live and not die. Don’t listen to Hezekiah when he persuades you, saying, “The LORD will deliver us.”
33Has any of the gods of the nations ever delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
34Where are the gods of Hamath and of Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
35Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’”
36But the people stayed quiet, and answered him not a word; for the king’s commandment was, “Don’t answer him.”
37Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, came with Shebna the scribe and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him Rabshakeh’s words.
