1Por isso resolvi não deixá-los tristes com outra visita dolorosa.
2Porque, se eu os entristecer, quem é que vai me alegrar? Como poderão me alegrar se eu lhes causar tristeza?
3Foi por isso que eu lhes escrevi daquela maneira em minha última carta, a fim de que vocês acertassem as coisas erradas antes que eu fosse. Então, quando eu for, não serei entristecido justamente por aqueles que compartilhariam da minha alegria. Eu tinha certeza de que a felicidade de vocês estava tão ligada a mim que vocês não se sentiriam felizes, a não ser que eu fosse com alegria.
4Escrevi aquela carta com aflição e angústia! Ela quase despedaçou meu coração, e digo-lhes francamente que chorei por causa dela. Eu não queria entristecê-los, mas tinha que mostrar-lhes quão profundamente os amava e me preocupava com o que estava acontecendo a vocês.
5Lembrem-se de que o homem acerca do qual escrevi, aquele que causou todo aquele transtorno, não me causou tanta tristeza quanto a vocês. Não quero ser mais severo com ele do que devo.
6Ele já foi suficientemente castigado com a reprovação da maioria de vocês.
7Agora é o momento de perdoá-lo e confortá-lo. Caso contrário, ele poderá ficar excessivamente desanimado.
8Assim, eu lhes peço que mostrem a ele agora que vocês verdadeiramente ainda o amam muito.
9E lhes escrevi daquele modo para poder verificar até que ponto vocês seriam obedientes ao meu ensino.
10Quando vocês perdoam alguém, eu também perdoo. E tudo quanto eu perdoei, se é que havia alguma coisa para perdoar, perdoei-o na presença de Cristo, para o bem de vocês,
11a fim de que Satanás, com a sua astúcia, não obtivesse vantagens sobre nós; pois conhecemos bem tudo o que ele está procurando fazer.
12Ora, quando cheguei à cidade de Trôade, o Senhor me deu oportunidades enormes para pregar o evangelho de Cristo.
13Contudo, Tito, meu querido irmão, não estava lá para me encontrar e eu não tive sossego no meu espírito, procurando saber onde ele estaria e o que lhe teria acontecido. Assim, despedi-me deles e fui direto para a Macedônia.
14Mas, demos graças a Deus, porque Cristo, por meio daquilo que fez, sempre nos conduz em vitória, de modo que agora, aonde quer que vamos, ele nos usa para falarmos aos outros a respeito do Senhor, e para espalharmos o evangelho como um perfume suave.
15Para com Deus, somos um aroma refrescante e saudável de Cristo, um perfume tanto para os salvos como para os que estão se perdendo.
16Para aqueles que estão se perdendo, somos um odor temível de morte e condenação, enquanto para aqueles que conhecem a Cristo somos um perfume vivificante. Mas quem é capacitado para uma tarefa dessas?
17Só aqueles que, como nós mesmos, são homens verdadeiros, enviados por Deus, falando com o poder de Cristo, e com o olhar divino sobre nós. Porque não somos como aqueles cujo propósito é negociar a palavra de Deus para conseguir com isso um bom lucro.

1ESTO pues determiné para conmigo, no venir otra vez á vosotros con tristeza.
2Porque si yo os contristo, ¿quién será luego el que me alegrará, sino aquel á quien yo contristare?
3Y esto mismo os escribí, porque cuando llegare no tenga tristeza sobre tristeza de los que me debiera gozar; confiando en vosotros todos que mi gozo es el de todos vosotros.
4Porque por la mucha tribulación y angustia del corazón os escribí con muchas lágrimas; no para que fueseis contristados, mas para que supieseis cuánto más amor tengo para con vosotros.
5Que si alguno me contristó, no me contristó á mí, sino en parte, por no cargaros, á todos vosotros.
6Bástale al tal esta reprensión hecha de muchos;
7Así que, al contrario, vosotros más bien lo perdonéis y consoléis, porque no sea el tal consumido de demasiada tristeza.
8Por lo cual os ruego que confirméis el amor para con él.
9Porque también por este fin os escribí, para tener experiencia de vosotros si sois obedientes en todo.
10Y al que vosotros perdonareis, yo también: porque también yo lo que he perdonado, si algo he perdonado, por vosotros lo he hecho en persona de Cristo;
11Porque no seamos engañados de Satanás: pues no ignoramos sus maquinaciones.
12Cuando vine á Troas para el evangelio de Cristo, aunque me fué abierta puerta en el Señor,
13No tuve reposo en mi espíritu, por no haber hallado á Tito mi hermano: así, despidiéndome de ellos, partí para Macedonia.
14Mas á Dios gracias, el cual hace que siempre triunfemos en Cristo Jesús, y manifiesta el olor de su conocimiento por nosotros en todo lugar.
15Porque para Dios somos buen olor de Cristo en los que se salvan, y en los que se pierden:
16A éstos ciertamente olor de muerte para muerte; y á aquéllos olor de vida para vida. Y para estas cosas ¿quién es suficiente?
17Porque no somos como muchos, mercaderes falsos de la palabra de Dios: antes con sinceridad, como de Dios, delante de Dios, hablamos en Cristo.

1But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.
2For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?
3And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
4For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
5But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
6Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.
7So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
8Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.
9For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
10To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;
11Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
12Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ’s gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
13I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.
14Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
15For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
16To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
17For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
World English Bible
1But I determined this for myself, that I would not come to you again in sorrow.
2For if I make you grieve, then who will make me glad but he who is made to grieve by me?
3And I wrote this very thing to you, so that when I came, I wouldn’t have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all that my joy would be shared by all of you.
4For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not that you should be made to grieve, but that you might know the love that I have so abundantly for you.
5But if any has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow not to me, but in part (that I not press too heavily) to you all.
6This punishment which was inflicted by the many is sufficient for such a one;
7so that, on the contrary, you should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his excessive sorrow.
8Therefore I beg you to confirm your love toward him.
9For to this end I also wrote, that I might know the proof of you, whether you are obedient in all things.
10Now I also forgive whomever you forgive anything. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ,
11that no advantage may be gained over us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes.
12Now when I came to Troas for the Good News of Christ, and when a door was opened to me in the Lord,
13I had no relief for my spirit, because I didn’t find Titus my brother, but taking my leave of them, I went out into Macedonia.
14Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and reveals through us the sweet aroma of his knowledge in every place.
15For we are a sweet aroma of Christ to God in those who are being saved and in those who perish:
16to the one a stench from death to death, to the other a sweet aroma from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?
17For we are not as so many, peddling the word of God. But as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God, we speak in Christ.
