1Joas avait sept ans lorsqu'il devint roi, et il régna quarante ans à Jérusalem. Et le nom de sa mère était Tsibia, de Béerséba.
2Et Joas fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Eternel pendant toute la vie de Jéhojada, le sacrificateur.
3Et Jéhojada lui fit épouser deux femmes, et il engendra des fils et des filles.
4Et après ces choses, Joas forma le dessein de restaurer la maison de l'Eternel.
5Et il assembla les sacrificateurs et les Lévites, et il leur dit : Sortez dans les villes de Juda, et vous recueillerez dans tout Israël de l'argent pour réparer la maison de votre Dieu, d'année en année ; et mettez à cette affaire de l'empressement. Mais les Lévites ne se hâtèrent point.
6Et le roi appela Jéhojada, le souverain sacrificateur, et lui dit : Pourquoi n'as-tu pas veillé à ce que les Lévites apportassent de Juda et de Jérusalem l'impôt mis sur Israël par Moïse, serviteur de l'Eternel, et par l'assemblée, pour le Tabernacle du témoignage ?
7Car Athalie, l'impie, ses fils, ont fait des dégâts à la maison de Dieu, et même ils ont employé pour les Baals tous les objets sacrés de la maison de l'Eternel.
8Alors, sur l'ordre du roi, on fit une caisse et on la plaça à la porte de la maison de l'Eternel, en dehors.
9Et on publia dans Juda et dans Jérusalem qu'on apportât à l'Eternel l'impôt mis par Moïse, serviteur de Dieu, sur Israël dans le désert.
10Et tous les chefs et tout le peuple se réjouirent, et ils apportèrent l'argent de l'impôt et le jetèrent dans la caisse, jusqu'à ce qu'on eût fini.
11Et quand le moment était venu d'apporter la caisse au contrôle du roi, par les soins des Lévites, quand ils voyaient qu'il y avait beaucoup d'argent, le secrétaire du roi et le commissaire du souverain sacrificateur venaient vider la caisse, puis ils l'emportaient et la remettaient à sa place. Ils faisaient ainsi de temps en temps et ils recueillaient de l'argent en abondance.
12Et le roi et Jéhojada le donnaient au directeur des travaux de la maison de l'Eternel, et l'on prenait à gage des tailleurs de pierre et des charpentiers pour restaurer la maison de l'Eternel, et aussi des ouvriers en fer et en airain, pour réparer la maison de l'Eternel.
13Et les directeurs des travaux furent actifs et les réparations avancèrent par leurs soins ; et ils rétablirent la maison de Dieu d'après son plan, et ils la remirent en état.
14Et quand ils eurent achevé, ils apportèrent devant le roi et Jéhojada le reste de l'argent ; et on en fit des ustensiles pour la maison de l'Eternel, des ustensiles pour le service et pour les sacrifices, et des coupes et des ustensiles d'or et d'argent. Et l'on offrit continuellement des holocaustes dans la maison de l'Eternel pendant toute la vie de Jéhojada.
15Et Jéhojada, devenu vieux et rassasié de jours, mourut ; il avait cent trente ans lorsqu'il mourut.
16Et on l'enterra dans la cité de David, avec les rois ; car il avait bien agi en Israël et envers Dieu et sa maison.
17Et après la mort de Jéhojada les chefs de Juda vinrent et se prosternèrent devant le roi. Alors le roi les écouta.
18Et ils abandonnèrent la maison de l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs pères, et ils servirent les aschères et les idoles ; et le courroux de l'Eternel fut sur Juda et Jérusalem, parce qu'ils s'étaient ainsi rendus coupables.
19Et il envoya parmi eux pour les ramener à l'Eternel des prophètes qui protestèrent contre leur conduite, mais ils n'écoutèrent point.
20Et l'Esprit de Dieu revêtit Zacharie, fils de Jéhojada, le sacrificateur, et il se présenta devant le peuple et leur dit : Ainsi parle Dieu : Pourquoi transgressez-vous les commandements de l'Eternel ? Vous ne réussissez point. Parce que vous avez abandonné l'Eternel, il vous a abandonnés !
21Et ils conspirèrent contre lui et ils le lapidèrent par ordre du roi dans les parvis de la maison de l'Eternel.
22Et le roi Joas ne se souvint pas de la bienveillance que lui avait témoignée Jéhojada, le père de Zacharie, et il fit tuer son fils. Et en mourant, Zacharie dit : Que l'Eternel voie et redemande !
23Et quand l'année fut révolue, l'armée des Syriens monta contre Joas et ils vinrent en Juda et à Jérusalem, et ils firent périr parmi le peuple tous les chefs du peuple et ils envoyèrent au roi de Damas tout leur butin.
24Car l'armée des Syriens était venue avec un petit nombre d'hommes ; et l'Eternel livra entre leurs mains une armée très considérable, parce qu'ils avaient abandonné l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs pères, et les Syriens firent justice de Joas.
25Et quand ils se furent éloignés de lui, (car ils le laissèrent dans de grandes souffrances), ses serviteurs conspirèrent contre lui à cause du meurtre des fils de Jéhojada, le sacrificateur, et ils le tuèrent sur son lit et il mourut. Et on l'enterra dans la cité de David, mais on ne l'enterra pas dans les sépulcres des rois.
26Et voici ceux qui conspirèrent contre lui : Zabad, fils de Siméath, une Ammonite, et Jéhozabad, fils de Simrith, une Moabite.
27Et quant à ses fils et à l'importance du tribut qui lui fut imposé, et à la fondation de la maison de Dieu, voici, ces choses sont écrites dans le Midrasch du livre des Rois. Et Amatsia, son fils, régna à sa place.

1DE SIETE años era Joas cuando comenzó á reinar, y cuarenta años reinó en Jerusalem. El nombre de su madre fué Sibia, de Beer-seba.
2E hizo Joas lo recto en ojos de Jehová todos los días de Joiada el sacerdote.
3Y tomó para él Joiada dos mujeres; y engendró hijos é hijas.
4Después de esto aconteció que Joas tuvo voluntad de reparar la casa de Jehová.
5Y juntó los sacerdotes y los Levitas, y díjoles: Salid por las ciudades de Judá, y juntad dinero de todo Israel, para que cada año sea reparada la casa de vuestro Dios; y vosotros poned diligencia en el negocio. Mas los Levitas no pusieron diligencia.
6Por lo cual el rey llamó á Joiada el principal, y díjole: ¿Por qué no has procurado que los Levitas traigan de Judá y de Jerusalem al tabernáculo del testimonio, la ofrenda que impuso Moisés siervo de Jehová, y de la congregación de Israel?
7Porque la impía Athalía y sus hijos habían destruído la casa de Dios, y además habían gastado en los ídolos todas las cosas consagradas á la casa de Jehová.
8Mandó pues el rey que hiciesen un arca, la cual pusieron fuera á la puerta de la casa de Jehová;
9E hicieron pregonar en Judá y en Jerusalem, que trajesen á Jehová la ofrenda que Moisés siervo de Dios había impuesto á Israel en el desierto.
10Y todos los príncipes y todo el pueblo se holgaron: y traían, y echaban en el arca hasta henchirla.
11Y como venía el tiempo para llevar el arca al magistrado del rey por mano de los Levitas, cuando veían que había mucho dinero, venía el escriba del rey, y el que estaba puesto por el sumo sacerdote, y llevaban el arca, y vaciábanla, y volvíanla á su lugar: y así lo hacían de día en día, y recogían mucho dinero;
12El cual daba el rey y Joiada á los que hacían la obra del servicio de la casa de Jehová, y tomaban canteros y oficiales que reparasen la casa de Jehová, y herreros y metalarios para componer la casa de Jehová.
13Hacían pues los oficiales la obra, y por sus manos fué la obra restaurada, y restituyeron la casa de Dios á su condición, y la consolidaron.
14Y cuando hubieron acabado, trajeron lo que quedaba del dinero al rey y á Joiada, é hicieron de él vasos para la casa de Jehová, vasos para el servicio, morteros, cucharas, vasos de oro y de plata. Y sacrificaban holocaustos continuamente en la casa de Jehová todos los días de Joiada.
15Mas Joiada envejeció, y murió harto de días: de ciento y treinta años era cuando murió.
16Y sepultáronlo en la ciudad de David con los reyes, por cuanto había hecho bien con Israel, y para con Dios, y con su casa.
17Muerto Joiada, vinieron los príncipes de Judá, é hicieron acatamiento al rey; y el rey los oyó.
18Y desampararon la casa de Jehová el Dios de sus padres, y sirvieron á los bosques y á las imágenes esculpidas; y la ira vino sobre Judá y Jerusalem por este su pecado.
19Y envióles profetas, para que los redujesen á Jehová, los cuales les protestaron: mas ellos no los escucharon.
20Y el espíritu de Dios envistió á Zachârías, hijo de Joiada el sacerdote, el cual estando sobre el pueblo, les dijo: Así ha dicho Dios: ¿Por qué quebrantáis los mandamientos de Jehová? No os vendrá bien de ello; porque por haber dejado á Jehová, él también os dejará.
21Mas ellos hicieron conspiración contra él, y cubriéronle de piedras por mandato del rey, en el patio de la casa de Jehová.
22No tuvo pues memoria el rey Joas de la misericordia que su padre Joiada había hecho con él, antes matóle su hijo; el cual dijo al morir: Jehová lo vea, y lo requiera.
23A la vuelta del año subió contra él el ejército de Siria; y vinieron á Judá y á Jerusalem, y destruyeron en el pueblo á todos los principales de él, y enviaron todos sus despojos al rey á Damasco.
24Porque aunque el ejército de Siria había venido con poca gente, Jehová les entregó en sus manos un ejército muy numeroso; por cuanto habían dejado á Jehová el Dios de sus padres. Y con Joas hicieron juicios.
25Y yéndose de él los Siros, dejáronlo en muchas enfermedades; y conspiraron contra él sus siervos á causa de las sangres de los hijos de Joiada el sacerdote, é hiriéronle en su cama, y murió: y sepultáronle en la ciudad de David, mas no lo sepultaron en los sepulcros de los reyes.
26Los que conspiraron contra él fueron Zabad, hijo de Simath Ammonita, y Jozabad, hijo de Simrith Moabita.
27De sus hijos, y de la multiplicación que hizo de las rentas, y de la instauración de la casa de Jehová, he aquí está escrito en la historia del libro de los reyes. Y reinó en su lugar Amasías su hijo.

1Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beer-sheba.
2And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
3And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.
4And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the LORD.
5And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not.
6And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?
7For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD did they bestow upon Baalim.
8And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the LORD.
9And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.
10And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.
11Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.
12And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the LORD, and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the LORD.
13So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.
14And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of the LORD, even vessels to minister, and to offer withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the days of Jehoiada.
15But Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.
16And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.
17Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.
18And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass.
19Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.
20And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.
21And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.
22Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.
23And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.
24For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.
25And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.
26And these are they that conspired against him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess.
27Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

8So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it outside at the gate of the LORD’s house.

20The Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them, “God says, ‘Why do you disobey the LORD’s commandments, so that you can’t prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has also forsaken you.’”
21They conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the LORD’s house.
22Thus Joash the king didn’t remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but killed his son. When he died, he said, “May the LORD look at it, and repay it.”
23At the end of the year, the army of the Syrians came up against him. They came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all their plunder to the king of Damascus.
24For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and the LORD delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment on Joash.
