1Et dans la suite il arriva que les fils de Moab et les fils d'Ammon, et avec eux une fraction des Meünites s'avancèrent contre Josaphat pour l'attaquer.
2Et l'on vint en donner avis à Josaphat en ces termes : Il arrive contre toi une grande multitude depuis l'autre côté de la mer, depuis Aram, et voilà qu'ils sont à Hatsatson-Thamar, c'est-à-dire Engueddi.
3Alors Josaphat eut crainte, et il se décida à consulter pour lui l'Éternel ; et il proclama un jeûne pour tout Juda.
4Et Juda s'assembla pour obtenir secours de l'Éternel, et de toutes les villes de Juda aussi l'on arriva pour chercher l'Éternel.
5Et Josaphat parut dans l'Assemblée de Juda et de Jérusalem au Temple de l'Éternel devant le nouveau parvis
6et il dit : Éternel, Dieu de nos pères, n'es-tu pas Dieu dans les Cieux, et n'es-tu pas souverain de tous les royaumes des nations ? et dans ta main est force et vertu, et il n'est personne qui te résiste.
7N'as-tu pas, ô notre Dieu, chassé les habitants de ce pays devant ton peuple d'Israël, et ne l'as-tu pas donné pour l'éternité à la race d'Abraham qui t'aimait ?
8Et ils l'ont habité et t'y ont érigé un Sanctuaire pour ton Nom, disant :
9Si nous sommes assaillis par la calamité, l'épée, le jugement et la peste et la famine, nous nous présenterons devant ce Temple et devant toi, car ton Nom est dans ce Temple, et nous élèverons vers toi nos cris du sein de notre détresse, et tu exauceras et sauveras.
10Or maintenant voici les fils d'Ammon et de Moab et ceux de la montagne de Séïr, chez lesquels tu n'as pas permis aux Israélites d'entrer, lorsqu'ils venaient du pays d'Egypte et qu'ils évitèrent et ne détruisirent pas,
11voilà que ces gens nous payent de retour en venant nous chasser de notre propriété où tu nous as installés.
12O notre Dieu, n'exerceras-tu pas tes jugements sur eux ? Car nous sommes sans force devant cette nombreuse multitude qui marche sur nous, et nous ne savons que faire, mais nos yeux sont tournés vers toi.
13Or tout Juda était debout devant l'Éternel, et même leurs enfants, leurs femmes et leurs fils.
14Mais Jahaziel, fils de Zacharie, fils de Benaïa, fils de Jehiel, fils de Matthania, Lévite, des fils d'Asaph, reçut l'Esprit de l'Éternel au sein de l'Assemblée
15et il dit : Attention ! tout Juda, et habitants de Jérusalem, et toi, roi Josaphat ! Ainsi parle à vous l'Éternel : Soyez sans crainte et sans effroi devant cette nombreuse multitude, car ce n'est pas ici votre guerre, c'est celle de Dieu.
16Demain faites une descente sur eux ; voici, ils graviront la montée de Tsits et vous les atteindrez à l'extrémité de la vallée devant le Désert de Jéruël.
17Vous n'aurez pas à vous y battre, paraissez, faites halte et soyez témoins de la délivrance que l'Éternel opérera pour vous. Juda et Jérusalem, soyez sans crainte et sans effroi, demain sortez à leur rencontre ! et l'Éternel sera avec vous.
18Alors Josaphat s'inclina la face contre terre, et tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem se prosternèrent devant l'Éternel pour rendre hommage à l'Éternel.
19Et les Lévites, des fils des Cahathites et des fils des Coraïtes, se levèrent pour louer l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, à haute et forte voix.
20Et au matin ils se levèrent et partirent pour le Désert de Thékôa, et à leur départ Josaphat parut et dit : Écoutez-moi, Juda et habitants de Jérusalem ! soyez fermes à vous confier en l'Éternel, votre Dieu, et vous pourrez être fermes : confiez-vous dans ses prophètes et vous aurez le succès.
21Et il se consulta avec le peuple, et il désigna des chantres de l'Éternel, qui, en costume sacré, rendaient grâces en passant devant la troupe équipée, et disaient : Louez l'Éternel, car sa miséricorde est éternelle.
22Et dans le moment où ils commençaient le concert et le cantique, l'Éternel plaça une embuscade contre les fils d'Ammon, de Moab, et ceux de la montagne de Séïr venus en Juda, et ceux-ci furent défaits.
23Et les fils d'Ammon et de Moab prirent position contre les habitants de la montagne de Séïr pour les dévouer et les massacrer, et quand ils en eurent fini avec les habitants de Séïr, ils s'aidèrent l'un l'autre à leur propre carnage.
24Cependant Juda atteignit la hauteur d'où on a la vue du Désert, et là ils regardèrent du côté de la multitude, et voilà que c'étaient des cadavres jonchant la terre, et pas un n'avait échappé.
25Alors Josaphat et son monde vinrent pour le pillage de leur butin, et ils trouvèrent chez eux abondance de bien, d'habits et de vases précieux, et ils en enlevèrent tant qu'ils ne les pouvaient porter ; et ils furent trois jours à piller le butin, car il était considérable.
26Et le quatrième jour ils s'assemblèrent dans la Vallée de bénédiction, car là ils bénirent l'Éternel, c'est pourquoi ils donnèrent à ce lieu le nom de Vallée de bénédiction, qu'il a encore aujourd'hui.
27Et tous les hommes de Juda et de Jérusalem, et Josaphat à leur tête, reprirent le chemin de Jérusalem dans la joie, car l'Éternel leur avait donné dans leurs ennemis une cause de joie.
28Et ils firent leur entrée à Jérusalem avec des harpes et des luths et des trompettes, jusqu'au Temple de l'Éternel.
29Et la terreur de Dieu envahit tous les royaumes des pays divers, lorsqu'ils apprirent que l'Éternel avait livré bataille aux ennemis d'Israël.
30Et le royaume de Josaphat fut tranquille, et son Dieu lui donna le repos de toutes parts.
31Ainsi régna Josaphat sur Juda. Il avait trente-cinq ans à son avènement et régna vingt-cinq ans à Jérusalem. Or le nom de sa mère était Azuba, fille de Silchi.
32Et il marcha sur les errements de son père Asa, et il n'en dévia point, pratiquant ce qui est bien aux yeux de l'Éternel.
33Seulement les tertres ne disparurent pas, et le peuple n'avait pas non plus le cœur dirigé vers le Dieu de ses pères.
34Le reste des actes de Josaphat, les premiers et les derniers sont d'ailleurs consignés dans les histoires de Jéhu, fils de Hanani, insérées dans le livre des rois d'Israël.
35Et dans la suite Josaphat, roi de Juda, se confédéra avec Achazia, roi d'Israël, impie dans sa conduite.
36Et ils se confédérèrent ensemble pour construire des navires pour le voyage de Tarsis ; et ils firent leurs vaisseaux à Etsion-Géber.
37Alors Eliézer, fils de Dodava, de Marésa, prononça une prophétie contre Josaphat en ces termes : Parce que tu t'es confédéré avec Achazia, l'Éternel a détruit ton œuvre. Et les navires furent mis en pièces et ne purent faire le voyage de Tarsis.

1PASADAS estas cosas, aconteció que los hijos de Moab y de Ammón, y con ellos otros de los Ammonitas, vinieron contra Josaphat á la guerra.
2Y acudieron, y dieron aviso á Josaphat, diciendo: Contra ti viene una grande multitud de la otra parte de la mar, y de la Siria; y he aquí ellos están en Hasasón-tamar, que es Engedi.
3Entonces él tuvo temor; y puso Josaphat su rostro para consultar á Jehová, é hizo pregonar ayuno á todo Judá.
4Y juntáronse los de Judá para pedir socorro á Jehová: y también de todas las ciudades de Judá vinieron á pedir á Jehová.
5Púsose entonces Josaphat en pie en la reunión de Judá y de Jerusalem, en la casa de Jehová, delante del atrio nuevo;
6Y dijo: Jehová Dios de nuestros padres, ¿no eres tú Dios en los cielos, y te enseñoreas en todos los reinos de las Gentes? ¿no está en tu mano tal fuerza y potencia, que no hay quien te resista?
7Dios nuestro, ¿no echaste tú los moradores de aquesta tierra delante de tu pueblo Israel, y la diste á la simiente de Abraham tu amigo para siempre?
8Y ellos han habitado en ella, y te han edificado en ella santuario á tu nombre, diciendo:
9Si mal viniere sobre nosotros, ó espada de castigo, ó pestilencia, ó hambre, presentarnos hemos delante de esta casa, y delante de ti, (porque tu nombre está en esta casa,) y de nuestras tribulaciones clamaremos á ti, y tú nos oirás y salvarás.
10Ahora pues, he aquí los hijos de Ammón y de Moab, y los del monte de Seir, á la tierra de los cuales no quisiste que pasase Israel cuando venían de la tierra de Egipto, sino que se apartasen de ellos, y no los destruyesen;
11He aquí ellos nos dan el pago, viniendo á echarnos de tu heredad, que tú nos diste á poseer.
12¡Oh Dios nuestro! ¿no los juzgarás tú? porque en nosotros no hay fuerza contra tan grande multitud que viene contra nosotros: no sabemos lo que hemos de hacer, mas á ti volvemos nuestros ojos.
13Y todo Judá estaba en pie delante de Jehová, con sus niños, y sus mujeres, y sus hijos.
14Y estaba allí Jahaziel hijo de Zachârías, hijo de Benaías, hijo de Jeiel, hijo de Mathanías, Levita de los hijos de Asaph, sobre el cual vino el espíritu de Jehová en medio de la reunión;
15Y dijo: Oid, Judá todo, y vosotros moradores de Jerusalem, y tú, rey Josaphat. Jehová os dice así: No temáis ni os amedrentéis delante de esta tan grande multitud; porque no es vuestra la guerra, sino de Dios.
16Mañana descenderéis contra ellos: he aquí que ellos subirán por la cuesta de Sis, y los hallaréis junto al arroyo, antes del desierto de Jeruel.
17No habrá para qué vosotros peleéis en este caso: paraos, estad quedos, y ved la salud de Jehová con vosotros. Oh Judá y Jerusalem, no temáis ni desmayéis; salid mañana contra ellos, que Jehová será con vosotros.
18Entonces Josaphat se inclinó rostro por tierra, y asimismo todo Judá y los moradores de Jerusalem se postraron delante de Jehová, y adoraron á Jehová.
19Y levantáronse los Levitas de los hijos de Coath y de los hijos de Coré, para alabar á Jehová el Dios de Israel á grande y alta voz.
20Y como se levantaron por la mañana, salieron por el desierto de Tecoa. Y mientras ellos salían, Josaphat estando en pie, dijo: Oidme, Judá y moradores de Jerusalem. Creed á Jehová vuestro Dios, y seréis seguros; creed á sus profetas, y seréis prosperados.
21Y habido consejo con el pueblo, puso á algunos que cantasen á Jehová, y alabasen en la hermosura de la santidad, mientras que salía la gente armada, y dijesen: Glorificad á Jehová, porque su misericordia es para siempre.
22Y como comenzaron con clamor y con alabanza, puso Jehová contra los hijos de Ammón, de Moab, y del monte de Seir, las emboscadas de ellos mismos que venían contra Judá, y matáronse los unos á los otros:
23Pues los hijos de Ammón y Moab se levantaron contra los del monte de Seir, para matarlos y destruirlos; y como hubieron acabado á los del monte de Seir, cada cual ayudó á la destrucción de su compañero.
24Y luego que vino Judá á la atalaya del desierto, miraron hacia la multitud; mas he aquí yacían ellos en tierra muertos, que ninguno había escapado.
25Viniendo entonces Josaphat y su pueblo á despojarlos, hallaron en ellos muchas riquezas entre los cadáveres, así vestidos como preciosos enseres, los cuales tomaron para sí, tantos, que no los podían llevar: tres días duró el despojo, porque era mucho.
26Y al cuarto día se juntaron en el valle de Beracah; porque allí bendijeron á Jehová, y por esto llamaron el nombre de aquel paraje el valle de Beracah, hasta hoy.
27Y todo Judá y los de Jerusalem, y Josaphat á la cabeza de ellos, volvieron para tornarse á Jerusalem con gozo, porque Jehová les había dado gozo de sus enemigos.
28Y vinieron á Jerusalem con salterios, arpas, y bocinas, á la casa de Jehová.
29Y fué el pavor de Dios sobre todos los reinos de aquella tierra, cuando oyeron que Jehová había peleado contra los enemigos de Israel.
30Y el reino de Josaphat tuvo reposo; porque su Dios le dió reposo de todas partes.
31Así reinó Josaphat sobre Judá: de treinta y cinco años era cuando comenzó á reinar, y reinó veinte y cinco años en Jerusalem. El nombre de su madre fué Azuba, hija de Silhi.
32Y anduvo en el camino de Asa su padre, sin apartarse de él, haciendo lo recto en los ojos de Jehová.
33Con todo eso los altos no eran quitados; que el pueblo aun no había enderezado su corazón al Dios de sus padres.
34Lo demás de los hechos de Josaphat, primeros y postreros, he aquí están escritos en las palabras de Jehú hijo de Hanani, del cual es hecha mención en el libro de los reyes de Israel.
35Pasadas estas cosas, Josaphat rey de Judá trabó amistad con Ochôzías rey de Israel, el cual fué dado á la impiedad:
36E hizo con él compañía para aparejar navíos que fuesen á Tharsis; y construyeron los navíos en Esion-geber.
37Entonces Eliezer hijo de Dodava de Mareosah, profetizó contra Josaphat, diciendo: Por cuanto has hecho compañía con Ochôzías, Jehová destruirá tus obras. Y los navíos se rompieron, y no pudieron ir á Tharsis.

1It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.
2Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi.
3And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
4And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.
5And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court,
6And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?
7Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?
8And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying,
9If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help.
10And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not;
11Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.
12O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.
13And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.
14Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation;
15And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.
16To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.
17Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you.
18And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD.
19And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high.
20And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
21And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.
22And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.
23For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.
24And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.
25And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much.
26And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.
27Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.
28And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD.
29And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel.
30So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about.
31And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.
32And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD.
33Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.
34Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.
35And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly:
36And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Ezion-geber.
37Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish.

1After this, the children of Moab, the children of Ammon, and with them some of the Meunites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.
2Then some came who told Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea from Syria. Behold, they are in Hazazon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi).
3Jehoshaphat was alarmed, and set himself to seek the LORD. He proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
4Judah gathered themselves together to seek help from the LORD. They came out of all the cities of Judah to seek the LORD.
5Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the LORD’s house, before the new court;
6and he said, “LORD, the God of our fathers, aren’t you God in heaven? Aren’t you ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in your hand, so that no one is able to withstand you.
7Didn’t you, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it to the offspring of Abraham your friend forever?
8They lived in it, and have built you a sanctuary in it for your name, saying,
9‘If evil comes on us—the sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine—we will stand before this house, and before you (for your name is in this house), and cry to you in our affliction, and you will hear and save.’
10Now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom you would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned away from them, and didn’t destroy them;
11behold, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of your possession, which you have given us to inherit.
12Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that comes against us. We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”
13All Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.

15and he said, “Listen, all Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat. The LORD says to you, ‘Don’t be afraid, and don’t be dismayed because of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.
16Tomorrow, go down against them. Behold, they are coming up by the ascent of Ziz. You will find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel.
17You will not need to fight this battle. Set yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed. Go out against them tomorrow, for the LORD is with you.’”
18Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the LORD, worshiping the LORD.
19The Levites, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites, stood up to praise the LORD, the God of Israel, with an exceedingly loud voice.

23For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. When they had finished the inhabitants of Seir, everyone helped to destroy each other.
24When Judah came to the place overlooking the wilderness, they looked at the multitude; and behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and there were none who escaped.
25When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take their plunder, they found among them in abundance both riches and dead bodies with precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away. They took plunder for three days, it was so much.
26On the fourth day, they assembled themselves in Beracah Valley, for there they blessed the LORD. Therefore the name of that place was called “Beracah Valley” to this day.
27Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat in front of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.
28They came to Jerusalem with stringed instruments, harps, and trumpets to the LORD’s house.
29The fear of God was on all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel.
