1Et Roboam se rendit à Sichem, parce que tout Israël y était venu pour le proclamer roi.
2Or, dès que Jéroboam, fils de Nabat, apprit ces nouvelles en Égypte, où il avait fui loin de Salomon, il en revint.
3Et le peuple l'envoya chercher, et il alla devant Roboam avec toute la synagogue, disant :
4Ton père a rendu notre joug bien dur ; allège donc maintenant la servitude trop dure de ton père, que notre joug soit moins lourd, et nous te servirons.
5Et il leur dit : Allez-vous-en pendant trois jours ; puis, revenez auprès de moi ; et le peuple s'en alla.
6Le roi Roboam réunit les anciens qui, du vivant de Salomon, son père, se tenaient auprès de lui, disant : Que me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple ?
7Il lui dirent : Si aujourd'hui tu es bienveillant pour ce peuple, si tu veux bien lui dire de bonnes paroles, ils seront tes serviteurs tous les jours.
8Mais, il dédaigna le conseil des anciens qu'il avait consultés, et il consulta les jeunes gens élevés avec lui, qui se tenaient devant lui.
9Et il leur dit : Comment me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple qui me dit : Allège le joug que nous a mis ton père ?
10Or, les jeunes gens, élevés avec lui, dirent : Voici comment tu parleras à ce peuple qui t'a dit : Ton père a rendu pesant notre joug, allège-le pour nous, réponds-leur : Mon petit doigt est plus gros que le corps de mon père.
11Mon père vous a châtiés avec un joug pesant, je le rendrai pour vous plus pesant encore ; il vous a châtiés à coups de fouet, mais je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.
12Et Jéroboam revint le troisième jour, avec tout le peuple, auprès de Roboam comme il le leur avait prescrit, disant : Revenez dans trois jours.
13Et le roi leur répondit durement, car il avait dédaigné le conseil des anciens.
14Et il leur parla selon le conseil des jeunes gens, et il leur dit : Mon père vous a chargés d'un joug pesant, je le rendrai pour vous plus pesant encore ; il vous a châtiés à coups de fouet, moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.
15Et le roi n'avait point écouté les fils d'Israël, parce que Dieu s'était tourné contre lui, disant : « Le Seigneur a relevé la parole qu'il a dite, par Achias le Sélonite, concernant Jéroboam, fils de Nabat,
16Et tout Israël. » C'est pourquoi le roi ne l'avait pas écouté, et le peuple s'écria : Qu'y a-t-il entre nous et David ? Notre héritage dépend-il du fils de Jessé ? A tes tentes, ô Israël, et toi, David, veille sur ta maison. Et Israël s'en alla chacun en sa demeure.
17Et les hommes d'Israël qui habitaient Juda rentrèrent en leurs villes, et Jéroboam régna sur eux.
18Et le roi envoya aux autres fils d'Israël, Adoniram, intendant des impôts ; ils le lapidèrent, il mourut ; et le roi Roboam s'empressa de monter sur son char pour fuir, et se renfermer dans Jérusalem.
19Et jusqu'à nos jours la maison de David a été rejetée par Israël.

1Y ROBOAM fué á Sichêm porque en Sichêm se había juntado todo Israel para hacerlo rey.
2Y como lo oyó Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el cual estaba en Egipto, donde había huído á causa del rey Salomón, volvió de Egipto.
3Y enviaron y llamáronle. Vino pues Jeroboam, y todo Israel, y hablaron á Roboam, diciendo:
4Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo: afloja tú, pues, ahora algo de la dura servidumbre, y del grave yugo con que tu padre nos apremió, y te serviremos.
5Y él les dijo: Volved á mí de aquí á tres días. Y el pueblo se fué.
6Entonces el rey Roboam tomó consejo con los viejos, que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y díjoles: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que responda á este pueblo?
7Y ellos le hablaron, diciendo: Si te condujeres humanamente con este pueblo, y los agradares, y les hablares buenas palabras, ellos te servirán perpetuamente.
8Mas él, dejando el consejo que le dieron los viejos, tomó consejo con los mancebos que se habían criado con él, y que delante de él asistían;
9Y díjoles: ¿Qué aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos á este pueblo, que me ha hablado, diciendo: Alivia algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?
10Entonces los mancebos que se habían criado con él, le hablaron, diciendo: Así dirás al pueblo que te ha hablado diciendo, Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas tú descárganos: así les dirás: Lo más menudo mío es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.
11Así que, mi padre os cargó de grave yugo, y yo añadiré á vuestro yugo: mi padre os castigó con azotes, y yo con escorpiones.
12Vino pues Jeroboam con todo el pueblo á Roboam al tercer día: según el rey les había mandado diciendo: Volved á mí de aquí á tres días.
13Y respondióles el rey ásperamente; pues dejó el rey Roboam el consejo de los viejos,
14Y hablóles conforme al consejo de los mancebos, diciendo: Mi padre agravó vuestro yugo, y yo añadiré á vuestro yugo: mi padre os castigó con azotes, y yo con escorpiones.
15Y no escuchó el rey al pueblo; porque la causa era de Dios, para cumplir Jehová su palabra que había hablado, por Ahías Silonita, á Jeroboam hijo de Nabat.
16Y viendo todo Israel que el rey no les había oído, respondió el pueblo al rey, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David, ni herencia en el hijo de Isaí? ¡Israel, cada uno á sus estancias! ¡David, mira ahora por tu casa! Así se fué todo Israel á sus estancias.
17Mas reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.
18Envió luego el rey Roboam á Adoram, que tenía cargo de los tributos; pero le apedrearon los hijos de Israel, y murió. Entonces se esforzó el rey Roboam, y subiendo en un carro huyó á Jerusalem.
19Así se apartó Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy.

1And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for to Shechem were all Israel come to make him king.
2And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.
3And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying,
4Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
5And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.
6And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?
7And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
8But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.
9And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?
10And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
11For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.
13And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,
14And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.
17But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

1Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.
2When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon), Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.
3They sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came, and they spoke to Rehoboam, saying,
4“Your father made our yoke grievous. Now therefore make the grievous service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.”
5He said to them, “Come again to me after three days.” So the people departed.
6King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, “What counsel do you give me about how to answer these people?”
7They spoke to him, saying, “If you are kind to these people, please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”
8But he abandoned the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.
9He said to them, “What counsel do you give, that we may give an answer to these people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter’?”
10The young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you shall tell the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter on us;’ thus you shall say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.
11Now whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’”
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, “Come to me again the third day.”
13The king answered them roughly; and King Rehoboam abandoned the counsel of the old men,
14and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”
15So the king didn’t listen to the people; for it was brought about by God, that the LORD might establish his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion do we have in David? We don’t have an inheritance in the son of Jesse! Every man to your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So all Israel departed to their tents.
17But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and the children of Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam hurried to get himself up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19So Israel rebelled against David’s house to this day.
