Cuando Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat, lo oyó (pues estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido a causa del rey Salomón), regresó de Egipto.

And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

Enviaron a llamarlo; y vinieron Jeroboam y todo Israel, y hablaron a Roboam, diciendo:

«Tu padre hizo pesado nuestro yugo. Ahora, pues, alivia tú la dura servidumbre de tu padre y el pesado yugo que puso sobre nosotros, y te serviremos».
Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo: afloja tú, pues, ahora algo de la dura servidumbre, y del grave yugo con que tu padre nos apremió, y te serviremos.
Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
“Your father made our yoke grievous. Now therefore make the grievous service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.”
Él les respondió: «Volved a mí de aquí a tres días». Y el pueblo se marchó.
Y él les dijo: Volved á mí de aquí á tres días. Y el pueblo se fué.
And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.
He said to them, “Come again to me after three days.” So the people departed.
El rey Roboam consultó a los ancianos que habían estado al servicio de su padre Salomón cuando aún vivía, y les preguntó: «¿Qué me aconsejáis que responda a este pueblo?»
Entonces el rey Roboam tomó consejo con los viejos, que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y díjoles: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que responda á este pueblo?
And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?
King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, “What counsel do you give me about how to answer these people?”
Ellos le respondieron diciendo: «Si eres bondadoso con este pueblo, y los complaces, y les hablas buenas palabras, ellos serán tus siervos para siempre».
Y ellos le hablaron, diciendo: Si te condujeres humanamente con este pueblo, y los agradares, y les hablares buenas palabras, ellos te servirán perpetuamente.
And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
They spoke to him, saying, “If you are kind to these people, please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”
Pero él rechazó el consejo que le dieron los ancianos, y consultó con los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y que estaban a su servicio.
Mas él, dejando el consejo que le dieron los viejos, tomó consejo con los mancebos que se habían criado con él, y que delante de él asistían;
But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.
But he abandoned the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.
Les dijo: “¿Qué aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos a este pueblo que me ha hablado diciendo: ‘Alivia el yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros’?”
Y díjoles: ¿Qué aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos á este pueblo, que me ha hablado, diciendo: Alivia algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?
And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?
He said to them, “What counsel do you give, that we may give an answer to these people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter’?”
Los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le respondieron diciendo: “Así dirás al pueblo que te ha hablado diciendo: ‘Tu padre hizo pesado nuestro yugo, pero tú aligéralo sobre nosotros’. Así les dirás: ‘Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que la cintura de mi padre.
Entonces los mancebos que se habían criado con él, le hablaron, diciendo: Así dirás al pueblo que te ha hablado diciendo, Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas tú descárganos: así les dirás: Lo más menudo mío es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.
And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
The young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you shall tell the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter on us;’ thus you shall say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.
Así que, si mi padre os impuso un yugo pesado, yo añadiré más a vuestro yugo. Mi padre os castigó con látigos, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones’”.

For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

Al tercer día, Jeroboam y todo el pueblo vinieron a Roboam, tal como el rey había dicho: «Volved a mí al tercer día».
Vino pues Jeroboam con todo el pueblo á Roboam al tercer día: según el rey les había mandado diciendo: Volved á mí de aquí á tres días.
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.

El rey les respondió con dureza; pues el rey Roboam abandonó el consejo de los ancianos,

And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”
Así pues, el rey no escuchó al pueblo; porque esto era un designio de Dios, para que Yahvé cumpliera la palabra que había pronunciado por medio de Ahías el silonita a Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat.
Y no escuchó el rey al pueblo; porque la causa era de Dios, para cumplir Jehová su palabra que había hablado, por Ahías Silonita, á Jeroboam hijo de Nabat.
So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
So the king didn’t listen to the people; for it was brought about by God, that the LORD might establish his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
Cuando todo Israel vio que el rey no los escuchaba, el pueblo respondió al rey diciendo: «¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? ¡No tenemos herencia en el hijo de Jesé! ¡A tus tiendas, Israel! ¡Mira ahora por tu propia casa, David!» Y todo Israel se fue a sus tiendas.
Y viendo todo Israel que el rey no les había oído, respondió el pueblo al rey, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David, ni herencia en el hijo de Isaí? ¡Israel, cada uno á sus estancias! ¡David, mira ahora por tu casa! Así se fué todo Israel á sus estancias.
And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.
When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion do we have in David? We don’t have an inheritance in the son of Jesse! Every man to your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So all Israel departed to their tents.

Entonces el rey Roboam envió a Hadoram, que estaba a cargo de los trabajos forzados, pero los hijos de Israel lo mataron a pedradas. El rey Roboam, sin embargo, logró subir rápidamente a su carro para huir a Jerusalén.
Envió luego el rey Roboam á Adoram, que tenía cargo de los tributos; pero le apedrearon los hijos de Israel, y murió. Entonces se esforzó el rey Roboam, y subiendo en un carro huyó á Jerusalem.
Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

Así se rebeló Israel contra la casa de David, hasta el día de hoy.
