1Il y avait un homme de Ramathaïm-Tsophim, de la montagne d’Éphraïm, nommé Elkana, fils de Jeroham, fils d’Élihu, fils de Thohu, fils de Tsuph, Éphratien.
2Il avait deux femmes, dont l’une s’appelait Anne, et l’autre Peninna; Peninna avait des enfants, mais Anne n’en avait point.
3Chaque année, cet homme montait de sa ville à Silo, pour se prosterner devant l’Éternel des armées et pour lui offrir des sacrifices. Là se trouvaient les deux fils d’Éli, Hophni et Phinées, sacrificateurs de l’Éternel.
4Le jour où Elkana offrait son sacrifice, il donnait des portions à Peninna, sa femme, et à tous les fils et à toutes les filles qu’il avait d’elle.
5Mais il donnait à Anne une portion double; car il aimait Anne, que l’Éternel avait rendue stérile.
6Sa rivale lui prodiguait les mortifications, pour la porter à s’irriter de ce que l’Éternel l’avait rendue stérile.
7Et toutes les années il en était ainsi. Chaque fois qu’Anne montait à la maison de l’Éternel, Peninna la mortifiait de la même manière. Alors elle pleurait et ne mangeait point.
8Elkana, son mari, lui disait: Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu, et ne manges-tu pas? Pourquoi ton cœur est-il attristé? Est-ce que je ne vaux pas pour toi mieux que dix fils?
9Anne se leva, après que l’on eut mangé et bu à Silo. Le sacrificateur Éli était assis sur un siège, près de l’un des poteaux du temple de l’Éternel.
10Et, l’amertume dans l’âme, elle pria l’Éternel et versa des pleurs.
11Elle fit un vœu, en disant: Éternel des armées! Si tu daignes regarder l’affliction de ta servante, si tu te souviens de moi et n’oublies point ta servante, et si tu donnes à ta servante un enfant mâle, je le consacrerai à l’Éternel pour tous les jours de sa vie, et le rasoir ne passera point sur sa tête.
12Comme elle restait longtemps en prière devant l’Éternel, Éli observa sa bouche.
13Anne parlait dans son cœur, et ne faisait que remuer les lèvres, mais on n’entendait point sa voix. Éli pensa qu’elle était ivre,
14et il lui dit: Jusques à quand seras-tu dans l’ivresse? Fais passer ton vin.
15Anne répondit: Non, mon seigneur, je suis une femme qui souffre en son cœur, et je n’ai bu ni vin ni boisson enivrante; mais je répandais mon âme devant l’Éternel.
16Ne prends pas ta servante pour une femme pervertie, car c’est l’excès de ma douleur et de mon chagrin qui m’a fait parler jusqu’à présent.
17Éli reprit la parole, et dit: Va en paix, et que le Dieu d’Israël exauce la prière que tu lui as adressée!
18Elle dit: Que ta servante trouve grâce à tes yeux! Et cette femme s’en alla. Elle mangea, et son visage ne fut plus le même.
19Ils se levèrent de bon matin, et après s’être prosternés devant l’Éternel, ils s’en retournèrent et revinrent dans leur maison à Rama. Naissance de Samuel V. 20-28: cf. (Ge 25:21. Ps 116:1, 2, 12-14.) 1 S 2:18-21. Elkana connut Anne, sa femme, et l’Éternel se souvint d’elle.
20Dans le cours de l’année, Anne devint enceinte, et elle enfanta un fils, qu’elle nomma Samuel, car, dit-elle, je l’ai demandé à l’Éternel.
21Son mari Elkana monta ensuite avec toute sa maison, pour offrir à l’Éternel le sacrifice annuel, et pour accomplir son vœu.
22Mais Anne ne monta point, et elle dit à son mari: Lorsque l’enfant sera sevré, je le mènerai, afin qu’il soit présenté devant l’Éternel et qu’il reste là pour toujours.
23Elkana, son mari, lui dit: Fais ce qui te semblera bon, attends de l’avoir sevré. Veuille seulement l’Éternel accomplir sa parole! Et la femme resta et allaita son fils, jusqu’à ce qu’elle le sevrât.
24Quand elle l’eut sevré, elle le fit monter avec elle, et prit trois taureaux, un épha de farine, et une outre de vin. Elle le mena dans la maison de l’Éternel à Silo: l’enfant était encore tout jeune.
25Ils égorgèrent les taureaux, et ils conduisirent l’enfant à Éli.
26Anne dit: Mon seigneur, pardon! Aussi vrai que ton âme vit, mon seigneur, je suis cette femme qui me tenais ici près de toi pour prier l’Éternel.
27C’était pour cet enfant que je priais, et l’Éternel a exaucé la prière que je lui adressais.
28Aussi je veux le prêter à l’Éternel: il sera toute sa vie prêté à l’Éternel. Et ils se prosternèrent là devant l’Éternel

1HUBO un varón de Ramathaim de Sophim, del monte de Ephraim, que se llamaba Elcana, hijo de Jeroham, hijo de Eliú, hijo de Thohu, hijo de Suph, Ephrateo.
2Y tenía él dos mujeres; el nombre de la una era Anna, y el nombre de la otra Peninna. Y Peninna tenía hijos, mas Anna no los tenía.
3Y subía aquel varón todos los años de su ciudad, á adorar y sacrificar á Jehová de los ejércitos en Silo, donde estaban dos hijos de Eli, Ophni y Phinees, sacerdotes de Jehová.
4Y cuando venía el día, Elcana sacrificaba, y daba á Peninna su mujer, y á todos sus hijos y á todas sus hijas, á cada uno su parte.
5Mas á Anna daba una parte escogida; porque amaba á Anna, aunque Jehová había cerrado su matriz.
6Y su competidora la irritaba, enojándola y entristeciéndola, porque Jehová había cerrado su matriz.
7Y así hacía cada año: cuando subía á la casa de Jehová, enojaba así á la otra; por lo cual ella lloraba, y no comía.
8Y Elcana su marido le dijo: Anna, ¿por qué lloras? ¿y por qué no comes? ¿y por qué está afligido tu corazón? ¿No te soy yo mejor que diez hijos?
9Y levantóse Anna después que hubo comido y bebido en Silo; y mientras el sacerdote Eli estaba sentado en una silla junto á un pilar del templo de Jehová,
10Ella con amargura de alma oró á Jehová, y lloró abundantemente.
11E hizo voto, diciendo: Jehová de los ejércitos, si te dignares mirar la aflicción de tu sierva, y te acordares de mí, y no te olvidares de tu sierva, mas dieres á tu sierva un hijo varón, yo lo dedicaré á Jehová todos los días de su vida, y no subirá navaja sobre su cabeza.
12Y fué que como ella orase largamente delante de Jehová, Eli estaba observando la boca de ella.
13Mas Anna hablaba en su corazón, y solamente se movían sus labios, y su voz no se oía; y túvola Eli por borracha.
14Entonces le dijo Eli: ¿Hasta cuándo estarás borracha?; digiere tu vino.
15Y Anna le respondió, diciendo: No, señor mío: mas yo soy una mujer trabajada de espíritu: no he bebido vino ni sidra, sino que he derramado mi alma delante de Jehová.
16No tengas á tu sierva por una mujer impía: porque por la magnitud de mis congojas y de mi aflicción he hablado hasta ahora.
17Y Eli respondió, y dijo: Ve en paz, y el Dios de Israel te otorgue la petición que le has hecho.
18Y ella dijo: Halle tu sierva gracia delante de tus ojos. Y fuése la mujer su camino, y comió, y no estuvo más triste.
19Y levantándose de mañana, adoraron delante de Jehová, y volviéronse, y vinieron á su casa en Ramatha. Y Elcana conoció á Anna su mujer, y Jehová se acordó de ella.
20Y fué que corrido el tiempo, después de haber concebido Anna, parió un hijo, y púsole por nombre Samuel, diciendo: Por cuanto lo demandé á Jehová.
21Después subió el varón Elcana, con toda su familia, á sacrificar á Jehová el sacrificio acostumbrado, y su voto.
22Mas Anna no subió, sino dijo á su marido: Yo no subiré hasta que el niño sea destetado; para que lo lleve y sea presentado delante de Jehová, y se quede allá para siempre.
23Y Elcana su marido le respondió: Haz lo que bien te pareciere; quédate hasta que lo destetes: solamente Jehová cumpla su palabra. Y quedóse la mujer, y crió su hijo hasta que lo destetó.
24Y después que lo hubo destetado, llevólo consigo, con tres becerros, y un epha de harina, y una vasija de vino, y trájolo á la casa de Jehová en Silo: y el niño era pequeño.
25Y matando el becerro, trajeron el niño á Eli.
26Y ella dijo: ¡Oh, señor mío! vive tu alma, señor mío, yo soy aquella mujer que estuvo aquí junto á ti orando á Jehová.
27Por este niño oraba, y Jehová me dió lo que le pedí.
28Yo pues le vuelvo también á Jehová: todos los días que viviere, será de Jehová. Y adoró allí á Jehová.

1Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:
2And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
3And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.
4And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
5But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb.
6And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.
7And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
8Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
9So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.
10And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.
11And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
12And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.
13Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
14And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.
15And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.
16Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
17Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
18And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.
19And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.
20Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
21And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.
22But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.
23And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.
24And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young.
25And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.
26And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.
27For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
28Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.

1Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
2He had two wives. The name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
3This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of Armies in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to the LORD, were there.
4When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and her daughters;
5but he gave a double portion to Hannah, for he loved Hannah, but the LORD had shut up her womb.
6Her rival provoked her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had shut up her womb.
7So year by year, when she went up to the LORD’s house, her rival provoked her. Therefore she wept, and didn’t eat.
8Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why don’t you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
9So Hannah rose up after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of the LORD’s temple.
10She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly.
11She vowed a vow, and said, “LORD of Armies, if you will indeed look at the affliction of your servant and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a boy, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head.”
12As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli saw her mouth.
13Now Hannah spoke in her heart. Only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.
14Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Get rid of your wine!”
15Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have not been drinking wine or strong drink, but I poured out my soul before the LORD.
16Don’t consider your servant a wicked woman; for I have been speaking out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation.”
17Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him.”
18She said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” So the woman went her way and ate; and her facial expression wasn’t sad any more.
19They rose up in the morning early and worshiped the LORD, then returned and came to their house to Ramah. Then Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.
20When the time had come, Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked him of the LORD.”
21The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice and his vow.
22But Hannah didn’t go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and stay there forever.”
23Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems good to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may the LORD establish his word.” So the woman waited and nursed her son until she weaned him.
24When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, and one ephah of meal, and a container of wine, and brought him to the LORD’s house in Shiloh. The child was young.
25They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli.
26She said, “Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD.
27I prayed for this child, and the LORD has given me my petition which I asked of him.
28Therefore I have also given him to the LORD. As long as he lives he is given to the LORD.” He worshiped the LORD there.
