1Et Samuel dit à Saül : C'est à moi que l'Éternel a donné la mission de t'oindre pour t'établir roi sur son peuple, sur Israël : écoute donc l'énoncé des paroles de l'Éternel !
2Ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées : Je veux punir ce qu'ont fait les Amalécites à Israël en se mettant sur son chemin lorsqu'il sortait de l'Egypte.
3Dès lors, marche et défais les Amalécites et dévoue tout ce qui est à eux, sans pitié pour eux, et fais mourir hommes et femmes, et l'enfant et le nourrisson, et le bœuf et la brebis, et le chameau et l'âne.
4Et Saül adressa l'appel au peuple, et le fit passer à la revue à Telaïm où il compta deux cent mille hommes d'infanterie, et dix mille hommes de Juda.
5Et Saül s'avança jusqu'à la ville d'Amalek et dressa une embuscade dans la vallée.
6Et Saül dit aux Kénites : Allez, faites votre retraite, descendez et sortez du milieu des Amalécites, afin que je ne vous emporte pas avec eux. Car vous avez montré de l'amitié à tous les Israélites lorsqu'ils venaient de l'Egypte. Et les Kénites se retirèrent du milieu des Amalécites.
7Et Saül battit Amalek de Havila à Sour qui est au devant de l'Egypte.
8Et il prit vivant Agag, roi d'Amalek ; et il exécuta l'anathème sur tout le peuple au fil de l'épée.
9Mais Saül et le peuple épargnèrent Agag et les meilleures pièces du menu et du gros bétail, et celles de seconde qualité, et les agneaux, et tout ce qui était bon ; et ils ne voulurent pas le dévouer ; mais tout ce qui était vil et détérioré, ils le dévouèrent.
10Alors la parole de l'Éternel fut adressée à Samuel en ces termes :
11Je me repens d'avoir fait Saül roi, car il s'est détourné de moi, et n'a point mis à effet mes paroles. Et Samuel fut irrité, et toute la nuit il éleva des cris vers l'Éternel.
12Et Samuel se leva pour rencontrer Saül le matin. Et Samuel reçut cet avis : Saül est venu au Carmel, et voilà qu'il s'érige un monument, et il s'en retourne et passe pour descendre à Guilgal.
13Et lorsque Samuel arriva près de Saül, Saül lui dit : Sois béni de l'Éternel, car j'ai mis à effet la parole de l'Éternel.
14Et Samuel dit : Mais qu'est-ce que ce que ces bêlements de brebis, qui arrivent à mes oreilles, et ces mugissements de bœufs que j'entends ?
15Et Saül dit : ils ont été amenés d'Amalek parce que le peuple a épargné les meilleures pièces du menu et du gros bétail, pour les offrir à l'Éternel, ton Dieu ; mais le reste, nous l'avons dévoué.
16Et Samuel dit à Saül : Arrête pour que je te déclare ce que l'Éternel m'a dit cette nuit. Et il lui dit : Parle.
17Et Samuel dit : Est-ce que, lors même que tu étais petit à tes propres yeux, tu n'es pas devenu le chef des Tribus d'Israël et par l'onction de l'Éternel ne t'a-t-Il pas créé roi d'Israël ?
18Et l'Éternel t'avait donné la mission de marcher, et Il t'avait dit : Va et mets sous l'anathème les pécheurs, les Amalécites, et leur fais la guerre jusqu'à ce que tu les aies extermines ;
19or, pourquoi n'as-tu pas écouté la voix de l'Éternel, et t'es-tu jeté sur le butin, et as-tu fait ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel ?
20Et Saül dit à Samuel : J'ai écouté la voix de l'Éternel et suivi la route par laquelle Il m'envoyait ; et j'ai amené Agag, roi d'Amalek et exécuté l'anathème sur les Amalécites.
21Mais le peuple a pris sur le butin des brebis et des bœufs, prémices de l'anathème, pour les sacrifier à l'Éternel ton Dieu, à Guilgal.
22Et Samuel dit : L'Éternel prend-Il plaisir aux holocaustes et aux victimes comme à l'obéissance rendue à l'Éternel ? Voici, l'obéissance est plus qu'une belle victime, l'attention plus que la graisse des béliers.
23Car la rébellion équivaut au péché de divination, et la révolte au crime d'idolâtrie. Puisque tu as rejeté la parole de l'Éternel, l'Éternel t'a rejeté pour t'ôter la royauté.
24Et Saül dit à Samuel : J'ai péché en transgressant l'ordre de l'Éternel et tes instructions, car j'ai eu peur du peuple et j'ai écouté sa voix.
25Et maintenant pardonne mon péché, et reviens avec moi, afin que j'adore l'Éternel !
26Et Samuel dit à Saül : Je ne retournerai point avec toi ! Puisque tu as répudié la parole de l'Éternel, l'Éternel t'a aussi répudié pour que tu ne règnes plus sur Israël.
27Puis Samuel se tourna pour s'en aller ; mais Saül le saisit par la houppe de son manteau, qui fut arrachée.
28Alors Samuel lui dit : Aujourd'hui l'Éternel t'arrache la royauté d'Israël, et Il la donne à un autre, meilleur que toi.
29Aussi bien Celui en qui Israël place sa confiance ne ment point et ne se repent point ; car Il n'est pas homme, pour se repentir.
30Et Saül dit : J'ai péché ! toutefois honore-moi devant les Anciens de mon peuple et devant Israël et reviens avec moi, afin que je rende mes adorations à l'Éternel, ton Dieu.
31Alors Samuel retourna à la suite de Saül, et Saül rendit ses adorations à l'Éternel.
32Et Samuel dit : Amenez-moi Agag, roi d'Amalek. Et Agag l'aborda gaiement, et Agag dit : Certes, la mort a perdu son amertume.
33Et Samuel dit : De même que ton épée a privé des femmes de leurs enfants, de même entre les femmes ta mère restera sans enfants. Et Samuel coupa Agag en pièces devant l'Éternel à Guilgal.
34Ensuite Samuel partit pour Rama, et Saül retourna dans sa maison à Gibea de Saül.
35Samuel ne visita plus Saül jusqu'au jour de sa mort ; car Samuel était dans le deuil à cause de Saül, et l'Éternel se repentait d'avoir fait Saül roi d'Israël.

1Y SAMUEL dijo á Saúl: Jehová me envió á que te ungiese por rey sobre su pueblo Israel: oye pues la voz de las palabras de Jehová.
2Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos: Acuérdome de lo que hizo Amalec á Israel; que se le opuso en el camino, cuando subía de Egipto.
3Ve pues, y hiere á Amalec, y destruiréis en él todo lo que tuviere: y no te apiades de él: mata hombres y mujeres, niños y mamantes, vacas y ovejas, camellos y asnos.
4Saúl pues juntó el pueblo, y reconociólos en Telaim, doscientos mil de á pie, y diez mil hombres de Judá.
5Y viniendo Saúl á la ciudad de Amalec, puso emboscada en el valle.
6Y dijo Saúl al Cineo: Idos, apartaos, y salid de entre los de Amalec, para que no te destruya juntamente con él: pues que tú hiciste misericordia con todos los hijos de Israel, cuando subían de Egipto. Apartóse pues el Cineo de entre los de Amalec.
7Y Saúl hirió á Amalec, desde Havila hasta llegar á Shur, que está á la frontera de Egipto.
8Y tomó vivo á Agag rey de Amalec, mas á todo el pueblo mató á filo de espada.
9Y Saúl y el pueblo perdonaron á Agag, y á lo mejor de las ovejas, y al ganado mayor, á los gruesos y á los carneros, y á todo lo bueno: que no lo quisieron destruir: mas todo lo que era vil y flaco destruyeron.
10Y fué palabra de Jehová á Samuel, diciendo:
11Pésame de haber puesto por rey á Saúl, porque se ha vuelto de en pos de mí, y no ha cumplido mis palabras. Y apesadumbróse Samuel, y clamó á Jehová toda aquella noche.
12Madrugó luego Samuel para ir á encontrar á Saúl por la mañana; y fué dado aviso á Samuel, diciendo: Saúl ha venido al Carmel, y he aquí él se ha levantado un trofeo, y después volviendo, ha pasado y descendido á Gilgal.
13Vino pues Samuel á Saúl, y Saúl le dijo: Bendito seas tú de Jehová; yo he cumplido la palabra de Jehová.
14Samuel entonces dijo: ¿Pues qué balido de ganados y bramido de bueyes es este que yo oigo con mis oídos?
15Y Saúl respondió: De Amalec los han traído; porque el pueblo perdonó á lo mejor de las ovejas y de las vacas, para sacrificarlas á Jehová tu Dios; pero lo demás lo destruimos.
16Entonces dijo Samuel á Saúl: Déjame declararte lo que Jehová me ha dicho esta noche. Y él le respondió: Di.
17Y dijo Samuel: Siendo tú pequeño en tus ojos ¿no has sido hecho cabeza á las tribus de Israel, y Jehová te ha ungido por rey sobre Israel?
18Y envióte Jehová en jornada, y dijo: Ve, y destruye los pecadores de Amalec, y hazles guerra hasta que los acabes.
19¿Por qué pues no has oído la voz de Jehová, sino que vuelto al despojo, has hecho lo malo en los ojos de Jehová?
20Y Saúl respondió á Samuel: Antes he oído la voz de Jehová, y fuí á la jornada que Jehová me envió, y he traído á Agag rey de Amalec, y he destruído á los Amalecitas:
21Mas el pueblo tomó del despojo ovejas y vacas, las primicias del anatema, para sacrificarlas á Jehová tu Dios en Gilgal.
22Y Samuel dijo: ¿Tiene Jehová tanto contentamiento con los holocaustos y víctimas, como en obedecer á las palabras de Jehová? Ciertamente el obedecer es mejor que los sacrificios; y el prestar atención que el sebo de los carneros:
23Porque como pecado de adivinación es la rebelión, y como ídolos é idolatría el infringir. Por cuanto tú desechaste la palabra de Jehová, él también te ha desechado para que no seas rey.
24Entonces Saúl dijo á Samuel: Yo he pecado; que he quebrantado el dicho de Jehová y tus palabras: porque temí al pueblo, consentí á la voz de ellos. Perdona pues ahora mi pecado,
25Y vuelve conmigo para que adore á Jehová.
26Y Samuel respondió á Saúl: No volveré contigo; porque desechaste la palabra de Jehová, y Jehová te ha desechado para que no seas rey sobre Israel.
27Y volviéndose Samuel para irse, él echó mano de la orla de su capa, y desgarróse.
28Entonces Samuel le dijo: Jehová ha desgarrado hoy de ti el reino de Israel, y lo ha dado á tu prójimo mejor que tú.
29Y también el Vencedor de Israel no mentirá, ni se arrepentirá: porque no es hombre para que se arrepienta.
30Y él dijo: Yo he pecado: mas ruégote que me honres delante de los ancianos de mi pueblo, y delante de Israel; y vuelve conmigo para que adore á Jehová tu Dios.
31Y volvió Samuel tras Saúl, y adoró Saúl á Jehová.
32Después dijo Samuel: Traedme á Agag rey de Amalec. Y Agag vino á él delicadamente. Y dijo Agag: Ciertamente se pasó la amargura de la muerte.
33Y Samuel dijo: Como tu espada dejó las mujeres sin hijos, así tu madre será sin hijo entre las mujeres. Entonces Samuel cortó en pedazos á Agag delante de Jehová en Gilgal.
34Fuése luego Samuel á Rama, y Saúl subió á su casa en Gabaa de Saúl.
35Y nunca después vió Samuel á Saúl en toda su vida: y Samuel lloraba á Saúl: mas Jehová se había arrepentido de haber puesto á Saúl por rey sobre Israel.

1Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD.
2Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.
3Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.
4And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.
5And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.
6And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
7And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt.
8And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
9But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
10Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying,
11It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.
12And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.
13And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD.
14And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
15And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.
16Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
17And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?
18And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
19Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?
20And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.
22And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
23For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
24And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.
25Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD.
26And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.
27And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.
28And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
29And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.
30Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God.
31So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.
32Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.
33And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.
34Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.
35And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
World English Bible
1Samuel said to Saul, “The LORD sent me to anoint you to be king over his people, over Israel. Now therefore listen to the voice of the LORD’s words.
2The LORD of Armies says, ‘I remember what Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way when he came up out of Egypt.
3Now go and strike Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and don’t spare them; but kill both man and woman, infant and nursing baby, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”
4Saul summoned the people, and counted them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen and ten thousand men of Judah.
5Saul came to the city of Amalek, and set an ambush in the valley.
6Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart, go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
7Saul struck the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, which is before Egypt.
8He took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
9But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, of the cattle, of the fat calves, of the lambs, and all that was good, and were not willing to utterly destroy them; but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
10Then the LORD’s word came to Samuel, saying,
11“It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king, for he has turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments.” Samuel was angry; and he cried to the LORD all night.
12Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and Samuel was told, saying, “Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself, turned, passed on, and went down to Gilgal.”
13Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, “You are blessed by the LORD! I have performed the commandment of the LORD.”
14Samuel said, “Then what does this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the cattle which I hear mean?”
15Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the cattle, to sacrifice to the LORD your God. We have utterly destroyed the rest.”
16Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stay, and I will tell you what the LORD said to me last night.” He said to him, “Say on.”
17Samuel said, “Though you were little in your own sight, weren’t you made the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel;
18and the LORD sent you on a journey, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’
19Why then didn’t you obey the LORD’s voice, but took the plunder, and did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight?”
20Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed the LORD’s voice, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21But the people took of the plunder, sheep and cattle, the best of the devoted things, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal.”
22Samuel said, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the LORD’s voice? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.
23For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected the LORD’s word, he has also rejected you from being king.”
24Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.
25Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD.”
26Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected the LORD’s word, and the LORD has rejected you from being king over Israel.”
27As Samuel turned around to go away, Saul grabbed the skirt of his robe, and it tore.
28Samuel said to him, “The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you.
29Also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.”
30Then he said, “I have sinned; yet please honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and come back with me, that I may worship the LORD your God.”
31So Samuel went back with Saul; and Saul worshiped the LORD.
32Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag the king of the Amalekites here to me!” Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women!” Then Samuel cut Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.
34Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.
35Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death, but Samuel mourned for Saul. The LORD grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.
