1Saul war ein Jahr im Königtum und regierte zwei Jahre über Israel;
2Und Saul erwählte sich dreitausend Mann aus Israel; und bei Saul waren zweitausend in Michmasch und auf dem Berge von Bethel, und tausend waren bei Jonathan zu Gibea-Benjamin, und das übrige Volk entsandte er, jeden Mann in seine Zelte.
3Und Jonathan schlug den Posten der Philister in Geba, und die Philister hörten es. Und Saul ließ im ganzen Lande in die Posaune stoßen und sagen: Die Hebräer sollen das hören.
4Und ganz Israel hörte sagen: Saul hat den Posten der Philister geschlagen, und Israel stinkt auch bei den Philistern; und alles Volk wurde gerufen nach Gilgal, hinter Saul her.
5Und die Philister versammelten sich, mit Israel zu streiten, dreißigtausend Streitwagen und sechstausend Reiter und des Volkes wie der Sand am Meeresufer in Menge, und sie zogen herauf und lagerten in Michmasch, östlich von Beth-Aven.
6Und die Männer von Israel sahen, daß sie in Drangsal waren, denn das Volk war in der Enge, und das Volk versteckte sich in Höhlen und in Dornhecken und in Felsklippen und in Festen und in Gruben.
7Und es gingen Hebräer über den Jordan in das Land Gad und Gilead. Saul aber war noch in Gilgal und alles Volk hinter ihm erzitterte.
8Und es wartete sieben Tage, bis zu der Zeit, die Samuel bestimmt hatte. Aber Samuel kam nicht nach Gilgal und das Volk zerstreute sich von ihm.
9Und Saul sprach: Bringt mir das Brandopfer und die Dankopfer herbei; und er opferte das Brandopfer auf.
10Und es geschah, als er das Brandopfer aufzuopfern vollendet hatte, siehe, da kam Samuel, und Saul ging hinaus, ihm entgegen, daß er ihn segne.
11Und Samuel sprach: Was hast du getan? Und Saul sprach: Weil ich sah, daß das Volk sich von mir zerstreute, und du zur bestimmten Zeit der Tage nicht kamst, und die Philister in Michmasch sich versammelten;
12Und ich sprach: Jetzt werden die Philister wider mich nach Gilgal herabkommen, und ich habe das Angesicht Jehovahs noch nicht angefleht; da hielt ich an mich und opferte das Brandopfer auf.
13Samuel aber sprach zu Saul: Du hast närrisch gehandelt, du hast das Gebot Jehovahs, deines Gottes, das Er dir geboten, nicht gehalten; denn jetzt hätte Jehovah dein Königtum über Israel auf ewig befestigt.
14Nun aber wird dein Königtum nicht bestätigt. Jehovah hat Sich einen Mann nach Seinem Herzen gesucht, und Jehovah hat ihm geboten, Führer zu sein über Sein Volk, weil du nicht gehalten hast, was Jehovah dir gebot.
15Und Samuel machte sich auf und ging hinauf von Gilgal nach Gibeah-Benjamin; Saul aber musterte das Volk, das sich bei ihm fand, bei sechshundert Mann.
16Und Saul und Jonathan, sein Sohn, und das Volk, das sich bei ihnen fand, lagen in Geba-Benjamin, die Philister aber lagerten in Michmasch.
17Und es ging ein Verheerungszug aus dem Lager der Philister in drei Haufen aus. Ein Haufe wandte sich auf den Weg nach Ophrah zum Lande Schual;
18Und ein Haufe wandte sich auf den Weg nach Beth-Choron, und ein Haufe wandte sich auf den Weg nach der Grenze, die hinschaut über die Schlucht Zeboim nach der Wüste zu.
19Es fand sich aber im ganzen Lande Israel kein Schmied, denn die Philister sagten: Damit die Hebräer sich weder Schwert noch Spieß machen.
20Und ganz Israel ging zu den Philistern hinab, wenn ein Mann seine Pflugschar und seine Hacke und seine Axt und seine Sichel wollte schmieden lassen.
21Und es waren Scharten an den Schneiden der Pflugscharen und der Hacken und der Dreizacken und der Äxte, und die Ochsenstacheln waren zu spitzen.
22Und am Tage des Streites fand sich weder Schwert noch Spieß in der Hand des ganzen Volkes, das mit Saul und Jonathan war, aber bei Saul und seinem Sohne Jonathan fanden sie sich.
23Und der Posten der Philister zog aus nach dem Passe von Michmasch.

1HABÍA ya Saúl reinado un año; y reinado que hubo dos años sobre Israel,
2Escogióse luego tres mil de Israel: los dos mil estuvieron con Saúl en Michmas y en el monte de Beth-el, y los mil estuvieron con Jonathán en Gabaa de Benjamín; y envió á todo el otro pueblo cada uno á sus tiendas.
3Y Jonathán hirió la guarnición de los Filisteos que había en el collado, y oyéronlo los Filisteos. E hizo Saúl tocar trompetas por toda la tierra, diciendo: Oigan los Hebreos.
4Y todo Israel oyó que se decía: Saúl ha herido la guarnición de los Filisteos; y también que Israel olía mal á los Filisteos. Y juntóse el pueblo en pos de Saúl en Gilgal.
5Entonces los Filisteos se juntaron para pelear con Israel, treinta mil carros, y seis mil caballos, y pueblo como la arena que está á la orilla de la mar en multitud; y subieron, y asentaron campo en Michmas, al oriente de Beth-aven.
6Mas los hombres de Israel, viéndose puestos en estrecho, (porque el pueblo estaba en aprieto), escondióse el pueblo en cuevas, en fosos, en peñascos, en rocas y en cisternas.
7Y algunos de los Hebreos pasaron el Jordán á la tierra de Gad y de Galaad: y Saúl se estaba aún en Gilgal, y todo el pueblo iba tras él temblando.
8Y él esperó siete días, conforme al plazo que Samuel había dicho; pero Samuel no venía á Gilgal, y el pueblo se le desertaba.
9Entonces dijo Saúl: Traedme holocausto y sacrificios pacíficos. Y ofreció el holocausto.
10Y como él acababa de hacer el holocausto, he aquí Samuel que venía; y Saúl le salió á recibir para saludarle.
11Entonces Samuel dijo: ¿Qué has hecho? Y Saúl respondió: Porque vi que el pueblo se me iba, y que tú no venías al plazo de los días, y que los Filisteos estaban juntos en Michmas,
12Me dije: Los Filisteos descenderán ahora contra mí á Gilgal, y yo no he implorado el favor de Jehová. Esforcéme pues, y ofrecí holocausto.
13Entonces Samuel dijo á Saúl: Locamente has hecho; no guardaste el mandamiento de Jehová tu Dios, que él te había intimado; porque ahora Jehová hubiera confirmado tu reino sobre Israel para siempre.
14Mas ahora tu reino no será durable: Jehová se ha buscado varón según su corazón, al cual Jehová ha mandado que sea capitán sobre su pueblo, por cuanto tú no has guardado lo que Jehová te mandó.
15Y levantándose Samuel, subió de Gilgal á Gabaa de Benjamín. Y Saúl contó la gente que se hallaba con él, como seiscientos hombres.
16Saúl pues y Jonathán su hijo, y el pueblo que con ellos se hallaba, quedáronse en Gabaa de Benjamín: mas los Filisteos habían puesto su campo en Michmas.
17Y salieron del campo de los Filisteos en correría tres escuadrones. El un escuadrón tiró por el camino de Ophra hacia la tierra de Sual.
18El otro escuadrón marchó hacia Beth-oron, y el tercer escuadrón marchó hacia la región que mira al valle de Seboim hacia el desierto.
19Y en toda la tierra de Israel no se hallaba herrero; porque los Filisteos habían dicho: Para que los Hebreos no hagan espada ó lanza.
20Y todos los de Israel descendían á los Filisteos cada cual á amolar su reja, su azadón, su hacha, ó su sacho,
21Y cuando se hacían bocas en las rejas, ó en los azadones, ó en las horquillas, ó en las hachas; hasta para una ahijada que se hubiera de componer.
22Así aconteció que el día de la batalla no se halló espada ni lanza en mano de alguno de todo el pueblo que estaba con Saúl y con Jonathán, excepto Saúl y Jonathán su hijo, que las tenían.
23Y la guarnición de los Filisteos salió al paso de Michmas.

1Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,
2Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Beth-el, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
3And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
4And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.
5And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven.
6When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
7And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
8And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
9And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.
10And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
11And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;
12Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
13And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
14But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
15And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.
16And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
17And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:
18And another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:
20But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.
21Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.
22So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
23And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.

1Saul was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-two years.
2Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the Mount of Bethel, and one thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. He sent the rest of the people to their own tents.
3Jonathan struck the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!”
4All Israel heard that Saul had struck the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel was considered an abomination to the Philistines. The people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal.
5The Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel: thirty thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude. They came up and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth Aven.
6When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in tombs, and in pits.
7Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
8He stayed seven days, according to the time set by Samuel; but Samuel didn’t come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him.
9Saul said, “Bring the burnt offering to me here, and the peace offerings.” He offered the burnt offering.
10It came to pass that as soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.
11Samuel said, “What have you done?” Saul said, “Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you didn’t come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash,
12therefore I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down on me to Gilgal, and I haven’t entreated the favor of the LORD.’ I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt offering.”
13Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which he commanded you; for now the LORD would have established your kingdom on Israel forever.
14But now your kingdom will not continue. The LORD has sought for himself a man after his own heart, and the LORD has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which the LORD commanded you.”
15Samuel arose, and went from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul counted the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.
16Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who were present with them, stayed in Geba of Benjamin; but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
17The raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned to the way that leads to Ophrah, to the land of Shual;
18another company turned the way to Beth Horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looks down on the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19Now there was no blacksmith found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make themselves swords or spears”;
20but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, each man to sharpen his own plowshare, mattock, ax, and sickle.
21The price was one payim each to sharpen mattocks, plowshares, pitchforks, axes, and goads.
22So it came to pass in the day of battle that neither sword nor spear was found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan; but Saul and Jonathan his son had them.
23The garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.
