1Entonces sacó Samuel una redomita de óleo o bálsamo, y la derramó sobre la cabeza de Saúl, y lo besó, diciendo: He aquí que el Señor te ha ungido para príncipe sobre su herencia y tú librarás a su pueblo de las manos de sus enemigos que la rodean. Esta señal tendrás de que Dios te ha ungido para príncipe:
2Cuando hoy te hayas separado de mí encontrarás dos hombres junto al sepulcro de Raquel, en la frontera de Benjamín, hacia la parte meridional, que te dirán: Se han hallado ya las burras que fuiste a buscar; y no pensando ya tu padre en ellas, está inquieto por causa de vosotros, y dice: ¿Qué le habrá sucedido a mi hijo?;
3y luego que partas de allí, y pases más adelante, llegando a la encina del Tabor, encontrarás tres hombres, que irán a adorar a Dios en Betel, uno que llevará tres cabritos, otro tres hogazas de pan, y el tercero una bota de vino;
4y habiéndote saludado te darán dos panes, que tú recibirás de su mano.
5Después que llegues al collado de Dios, donde está el presidio de los filisteos, y entres en la ciudad, encontrarás una compañía o coro de profetas, que bajan del lugar excelso, precedidos de salterio, tambor, y flauta, y cítara y ellos profetizando.
6Y te arrebatará el espíritu del Señor, y profetizarás con ellos, y quedarás mudado en otro hombre.
7Cuando vieres, pues, cumplidas todas estas señales, haz osadamente cuanto te ocurra deber hacer, porque contigo está el Señor.
8Después descenderás antes que yo a Gálgala (donde iré yo a encontrarte), para ofrecer holocaustos y sacrificar víctimas pacíficas al Señor. Me aguardarás siete días, hasta tanto que yo llegue, y te declararé lo que debes hacer.
9Así que Saúl volvió las espaldas, y se separó de Samuel, le mudó Dios el corazón en otro, y le sucedieron aquel día todas estas señales.
10En efecto, llegados al collado arriba dicho, he aquí que se encuentra con un coro de profetas; y arrebatado del espíritu del Señor se puso a profetizar o cantar en medio de ellos.
11Y viendo los que le habían conocido poco antes, como estaba con los profetas y profetizando, se dijeron unos a otros: ¿Qué es esto que ha sucedido al hijo de Cis? Pues, ¿también Saúl es uno de los profetas?
12Sobre lo cual respondieron algunos: Y ¿quién es el padre de estos otros profetas? Por donde pasó a proverbio: Pues, ¿también Saúl es uno de los profetas?
13Y cesó Saúl de profetizar, y se fue al lugar alto, a Gabaa, su patria.
14Y un tío suyo le dijo a él y a su criado: ¿A dónde habéis ido? Le respondieron: A buscar las burras; y no habiéndolas encontrado; nos dirigimos a Samuel.
15Le dijo su tío: Cuéntame lo que te ha dicho Samuel.
16Le respondió Saúl: Nos hizo saber que habían aparecido las burras. Mas no le descubrió nada de lo que Samuel le había dicho acerca del reino.
17Después de esto convocó Samuel al pueblo delante del Señor, en Masfa.
18Y dijo a los hijos de Israel: Esto dice el Señor Dios de Israel: Yo saqué a Israel de Egipto, y os libré de las manos de todos los reyes que os oprimían.
19Mas vosotros en el día habéis desechado a vuestro Dios, solo el cual os ha salvado de todos los males y tribulaciones, y habéis dicho: No más así, establécenos un rey que nos gobierne. Ahora, pues, presentaos delante del Señor por orden de vuestras tribus y familias.
20Y sorteó Samuel todas las tribus de Israel, y cayó la suerte sobre la tribu de Benjamín.
21Sorteó después las familias de la tribu de Benjamín, y tocó la suerte a la familia de Metri, y finalmente a Saúl, hijo de Cis. Lo buscaron luego, mas no pudieron encontrarlo.
22Con esto consultaron al Señor para saber si comparecería allí Saúl. A lo que respondió el Señor: A estas horas está escondido en su casa.
23Fueron, pues, corriendo, y lo trajeron de allí; y así que estuvo en medio del pueblo, se vio que era más alto que todos los demás todo lo que va de hombros arriba.
24Dijo entonces Samuel a todo el pueblo: Ya véis a quien ha elegido el Señor, y que no hay en todo el pueblo uno semejante a él. Y gritó todo el pueblo, diciendo: ¡Viva el rey!
25En seguida expuso Samuel al pueblo la ley de la monarquía, y la escribió en un libro, que depositó en el Tabernáculo delante del Señor; después de lo cual despidió Samuel a todo el pueblo, cada cual a su casa.
26También Saúl se fue a su casa, en Gabaa; siguiéndole parte del ejército, aquellos cuyos corazones había movido el Señor.
27Al contrario los hijos de Belial, o los desobedientes al Señor, dijeron: ¿Por ventura podrá éste salvarnos? Y le despreciaron, y no le ofrecieron los donativos acostumbrados; mas él disimuló, haciendo como que no lo entendía.

1TOMANDO entonces Samuel una ampolla de aceite, derramóla sobre su cabeza, y besólo, y díjole: ¿No te ha ungido Jehová por capitán sobre su heredad?
2Hoy, después que te hayas apartado de mí, hallarás dos hombres junto al sepulcro de Rachêl, en el término de Benjamín, en Selsah, los cuales te dirán: Las asnas que habías ido á buscar, se han hallado; tu padre pues ha dejado ya el negocio de las asnas, si bien está angustioso por vosotros, diciendo: ¿Qué haré acerca de mi hijo?
3Y como de allí te fueres más adelante, y llegares á la campiña de Tabor, te saldrán al encuentro tres hombres que suben á Dios en Beth-el, llevando el uno tres cabritos, y el otro tres tortas de pan, y el tercero una vasija de vino:
4Los cuales, luego que te hayan saludado, te darán dos panes, los que tomarás de manos de ellos.
5De allí vendrás al collado de Dios donde está la guarnición de los Filisteos; y cuando entrares allá en la ciudad encontrarás una compañía de profetas que descienden del alto, y delante de ellos salterio, y adufe, y flauta, y arpa, y ellos profetizando:
6Y el espíritu de Jehová te arrebatará, y profetizarás con ellos, y serás mudado en otro hombre.
7Y cuando te hubieren sobrevenido estas señales, haz lo que te viniere á la mano, porque Dios es contigo.
8Y bajarás delante de mí á Gilgal; y luego descenderé yo á ti para sacrificar holocaustos, é inmolar víctimas pacíficas. Espera siete días, hasta que yo venga á ti, y te enseñe lo que has de hacer.
9Y fué que así como tornó él su hombro para partirse de Samuel, mudóle Dios su corazón; y todas estas señales acaecieron en aquel día.
10Y cuando llegaron allá al collado, he aquí la compañía de los profetas que venía á encontrarse con él, y el espíritu de Dios lo arrebató, y profetizó entre ellos.
11Y aconteció que, cuando todos los que le conocían de ayer y de antes, vieron como profetizaba con los profetas, el pueblo decía el uno al otro: ¿Qué ha sucedido al hijo de Cis? ¿Saúl también entre los profetas?
12Y alguno de allí respondió, y dijo: ¿Y quién es el padre de ellos? Por esta causa se tornó en proverbio: ¿También Saúl entre los profetas?
13Y cesó de profetizar, y llegó al alto.
14Y un tío de Saúl dijo á él y á su criado: ¿Dónde fuisteis? Y él respondió: A buscar las asnas; y como vimos que no parecían, fuimos á Samuel.
15Y dijo el tío de Saúl: Yo te ruego me declares qué os dijo Samuel.
16Y Saúl respondió á su tío: Declarónos expresamente que las asnas habían parecido. Mas del negocio del reino, de que Samuel le había hablado, no le descubrió nada.
17Y Samuel convocó el pueblo á Jehová en Mizpa;
18Y dijo á los hijos de Israel: Así ha dicho Jehová el Dios de Israel: Yo saqué á Israel de Egipto, y os libré de mano de los Egipcios, y de mano de todos los reinos que os afligieron:
19Mas vosotros habéis desechado hoy á vuestro Dios, que os guarda de todas vuestras aflicciones y angustias, y dijisteis: No, sino pon rey sobre nosotros. Ahora pues, poneos delante de Jehová por vuestras tribus y por vuestros millares.
20Y haciendo allegar Samuel todas las tribus de Israel, fué tomada la tribu de Benjamín.
21E hizo llegar la tribu de Benjamín por sus linajes, y fué tomada la familia de Matri; y de ella fué tomado Saúl hijo de Cis. Y le buscaron, mas no fué hallado.
22Preguntaron pues otra vez á Jehová, si había aún de venir allí aquel varón. Y respondió Jehová: He aquí que él está escondido entre el bagaje.
23Entonces corrieron, y tomáronlo de allí, y puesto en medio del pueblo, desde el hombro arriba era más alto que todo el pueblo.
24Y Samuel dijo á todo el pueblo: ¿Habéis visto al que ha elegido Jehová, que no hay semejante á él en todo el pueblo? Entonces el pueblo clamó con alegría, diciendo: Viva el rey.
25Samuel recitó luego al pueblo el derecho del reino, y escribiólo en un libro, el cual guardó delante de Jehová.
26Y envió Samuel á todo el pueblo cada uno á su casa. Y Saúl también se fué á su casa en Gabaa, y fueron con él el ejército, el corazón de los cuales Dios había tocado.
27Pero los impíos dijeron: ¿Cómo nos ha de salvar éste? Y tuviéronle en poco, y no le trajeron presente: mas él disimuló.
King James Version
1Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?
2When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel’s sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?
3Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Beth-el, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:
4And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.
5After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:
6And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
7And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.
8And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou shalt do.
9And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
10And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
11And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
12And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
13And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.
14And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.
15And Saul’s uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.
16And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
17And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh;
18And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:
19And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.
20And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
21When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.
22Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff.
23And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
24And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.
25Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
26And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.
27But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.

1Then Samuel took the vial of oil and poured it on his head, then kissed him and said, “Hasn’t the LORD anointed you to be prince over his inheritance?
2When you have departed from me today, then you will find two men by Rachel’s tomb, on the border of Benjamin at Zelzah. They will tell you, ‘The donkeys which you went to look for have been found; and behold, your father has stopped caring about the donkeys and is anxious for you, saying, “What shall I do for my son?”’
3“Then you will go on forward from there, and you will come to the oak of Tabor. Three men will meet you there going up to God to Bethel: one carrying three young goats, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a container of wine.
4They will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive from their hand.
5“After that you will come to the hill of God, where the garrison of the Philistines is; and it will happen, when you have come there to the city, that you will meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a lute, a tambourine, a pipe, and a harp before them; and they will be prophesying.
6Then the LORD’s Spirit will come mightily on you, then you will prophesy with them and will be turned into another man.
7Let it be, when these signs have come to you, that you do what is appropriate for the occasion; for God is with you.
8“Go down ahead of me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings. Wait seven days, until I come to you and show you what you are to do.”
9It was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart; and all those signs happened that day.
10When they came there to the hill, behold, a band of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came mightily on him, and he prophesied among them.
11When all who knew him before saw that, behold, he prophesied with the prophets, then the people said to one another, “What is this that has come to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
12One from the same place answered, “Who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
13When he had finished prophesying, he came to the high place.
14Saul’s uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” He said, “To seek the donkeys. When we saw that they were not found, we came to Samuel.”
15Saul’s uncle said, “Please tell me what Samuel said to you.”
16Saul said to his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys were found.” But concerning the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel spoke, he didn’t tell him.
17Samuel called the people together to the LORD to Mizpah;
18and he said to the children of Israel, “The LORD, the God of Israel, says ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’
19But you have today rejected your God, who himself saves you out of all your calamities and your distresses; and you have said to him, ‘No! Set a king over us!’ Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and by your thousands.”
20So Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen.
21He brought the tribe of Benjamin near by their families and the family of the Matrites was chosen. Then Saul the son of Kish was chosen; but when they looked for him, he could not be found.
22Therefore they asked of the LORD further, “Is there yet a man to come here?” The LORD answered, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.”
23They ran and got him there. When he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
24Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom the LORD has chosen, that there is no one like him among all the people?” All the people shouted and said, “Long live the king!”
25Then Samuel told the people the regulations of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before the LORD. Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
26Saul also went to his house in Gibeah; and the army went with him, whose hearts God had touched.
27But certain worthless fellows said, “How could this man save us?” They despised him, and brought him no tribute. But he held his peace.
