1considerando la pureza de la vida que llevan, y el respeto que les tienen.
2El adorno de las cuales no ha de ser por de fuera con los rizos del cabello, ni con dijes de oro, ni gala de vestidos.
3La persona interior escondida en el corazón, es la que debe adornar con el atavío incorruptible de un espíritu de dulzura y de paz, lo cual es un precioso adorno a los ojos de Dios.
4Porque así también se ataviaban antiguamente aquellas santas mujeres, que esperaban en Dios, viviendo sujetas a sus maridos.
5Al modo que Sara era obediente a Abrahán, a quien llamaba su señor. De ella sois hijas vosotras, si vivís bien y sin amedrentaros por ningún temor.
6Maridos, vosotros igualmente habéis de cohabitar con vuestras mujeres, tratándolas con honor y discreción como a sexo más débil, y como a coherederas de la gracia, o beneficio de la vida eterna, a fin de que nada estorbe el efecto de vuestras oraciones.
7Finalmente, sed todos de un mismo corazón, compasivos, amantes de todos los hermanos, misericordiosos, modestos, humildes,
8no volviendo mal por mal, ni maldición por maldición, antes al contrario, bienes o bendiciones; porque a esto sois llamados, a fin de que poseáis la herencia de la bendición celestial.
9Así, pues, el que de veras ama la vida, y quiere vivir días dichosos, refrene su lengua del mal, y sus labios no se desplieguen a favor de la falsedad.
10Desvíese del mal, y obre el bien; busque con ardor la paz y vaya en pos de ella.
11Pues el Señor tiene fijos sus ojos sobre los justos, y escucha propicio las súplicas de ellos, al paso que mira con recelo a los que obran mal.
12¿Y quién hay que pueda dañaros, si no pensáis más que en obrar bien?
13Pero si sucede que padecéis algo por amor a la justicia, sois bienaventurados. No temáis de los enemigos, ni os conturbéis;
14sino bendecid en vuestros corazones al Señor Jesucristo prontos siempre a dar satisfacción a cualquiera que os pida razón de la esperanza o religión en que vivís.
15Aunque debéis hacerlo con modestia y circunspección, como quien tiene buena conciencia, de manera que, cuando murmuran de vosotros los que calumnian vuestro buen proceder en Cristo , queden confundidos,
16pues mejor es padecer (si Dios lo quiere así) haciendo bien, que obrando mal;
17porque también Cristo murió una vez por nuestros pecados, el justo por los injustos, a fin de reconciliarnos con Dios, habiendo sido a la verdad muerto según la carne, pero vivificado por el Espíritu de Dios.
18En el cual, o por cuyo movimiento, fue también a predicar a los espíritus encarcelados,
19que habían sido incrédulos en otro tiempo, cuando les estaba esperando a penitencia aquella larga paciencia de Dios en los días de Noé , al fabricarse el arca , en la cual pocas personas, es a saber, ocho solamente se salvaron en medio del agua.
20Lo que era figura del bautismo de ahora, el cual de una manera semejante os salva a vosotros, no con quitar las manchas de la carne, sino justificando la conciencia para con Dios por la virtud de la resurrección de Jesucristo;
21el cual, después de haber devorado la muerte, a fin de hacernos herederos de la vida eterna, está a la diestra de Dios, habiendo subido al cielo, y estándole sumisos los ángeles, y las potestades y las virtudes.
22Habiendo, pues, Cristo padecido por nosotros la muerte en su carne, armaos también vosotros de esta consideración, y es que quien mortificó o murió a la carne por el bautismo , ha acabado de pecar.

1ASIMISMO vosotras, mujeres, sed sujetas á vuestros maridos; para que también los que no creen á la palabra, sean ganados sin palabra por la conversación de sus mujeres,
2Considerando vuestra casta conversación, que es en temor.
3El adorno de las cuales no sea exterior con encrespamiento del cabello, y atavío de oro, ni en compostura de ropas;
4Sino el hombre del corazón que está encubierto, en incorruptible ornato de espíritu agradable y pacífico, lo cual es de grande estima delante de Dios.
5Porque así también se ataviaban en el tiempo antiguo aquellas santas mujeres que esperaban en Dios, siendo sujetas á sus maridos:
6Como Sara obedecía á Abraham, llamándole señor; de la cual vosotras sois hechas hijas, haciendo bien, y no sois espantadas de ningún pavor.
7Vosotros maridos, semejantemente, habitad con ellas según ciencia, dando honor á la mujer como á vaso más frágil, y como á herederas juntamente de la gracia de la vida; para que vuestras oraciones no sean impedidas.
8Y finalmente, sed todos de un mismo corazón, compasivos, amándoos fraternalmente, misericordiosos, amigables;
9No volviendo mal por mal, ni maldición por maldición, sino antes por el contrario, bendiciendo; sabiendo que vosotros sois llamados para que poseáis bendición en herencia.
10Porque el que quiere amar la vida, y ver días buenos, refrene su lengua de mal, y sus labios no hablen engaño;
11Apártase del mal, y haga bien; busque la paz, y sígala.
12Porque los ojos del Señor están sobre los justos, y sus oídos atentos á sus oraciones: pero el rostro del Señor está sobre aquellos que hacen mal.
13¿Y quién es aquel que os podrá dañar, si vosotros seguís el bien?
14Mas también si alguna cosa padecéis por hacer bien, sois bienaventurados. Por tanto, no temáis por el temor de ellos, ni seáis turbados;
15Sino santificad al Señor Dios en vuestros corazones, y estad siempre aparejados para responder con mansedumbre y reverencia á cada uno que os demande razón de la esperanza que hay en vosotros:
16Teniendo buena conciencia, para que en lo que murmuran de vosotros como de malhechores, sean confundidos los que blasfeman vuestra buena conversación en Cristo.
17Porque mejor es que padezcáis haciendo bien, si la voluntad de Dios así lo quiere, que haciendo mal.
18Porque también Cristo padeció una vez por los pecados, el justo por los injustos, para llevarnos á Dios, siendo á la verdad muerto en la carne, pero vivificado en espíritu;
19En el cual también fué y predicó á los espíritus encarcelados;
20Los cuales en otro tiempo fueron desobedientes, cuando una vez esperaba la paciencia de Dios en los días de Noé, cuando se aparejaba el arca; en la cual pocas, es á saber, ocho personas fueron salvas por agua.
21A la figura de la cual el bautismo que ahora corresponde nos salva (no quitando las inmundicias de la carne, sino como demanda de una buena conciencia delante de Dios,) por la resurrección de Jesucristo:
22El cual está á la diestra de Dios, habiendo subido al cielo; estando á él sujetos los ángeles, y las potestades, y virtudes.

1Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
2While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.
3Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
4But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
5For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
6Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
7Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
8Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
9Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
10For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
11Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
12For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
13And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?
14But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;
15But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
16Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
17For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
18For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
21The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
22Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

1In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word,
2seeing your pure behavior in fear.
3Let your beauty come not from the outward adorning of braiding your hair, and of wearing gold ornaments or of putting on fine clothing,
4but from the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight.
5For this is how in the past the holy women who hoped in God also adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands.
6So Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you now are if you do well and are not put in fear by any terror.
7You husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman as to the weaker vessel, as also being joint heirs of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
8Finally, all of you be like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, courteous,
9not rendering evil for evil or insult for insult; but instead blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.
10For, “He who would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
11Let him turn away from evil and do good. Let him seek peace and pursue it.
12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears open to their prayer; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
13Now who will harm you if you become imitators of that which is good?
14But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “Don’t fear what they fear, neither be troubled.”
15But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear,
16having a good conscience. Thus, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be disappointed who curse your good way of life in Christ.
17For it is better, if it is God’s will, that you suffer for doing what is right than for doing evil.
18Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit,
19in whom he also went and preached to the spirits in prison,
20who before were disobedient when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ship was being built. In it, few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.
21This is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you—not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
22who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers being made subject to him.
