1Benhadad aber, der König von Syrien, versammelte seine ganze Macht, und zweiunddreißig Könige waren mit ihm und Pferde und Wagen; und er zog herauf und belagerte Samaria und bestürmte es.
2Und er sandte Boten in die Stadt zu Ahab, dem König von Israel, und ließ ihm sagen:
3So spricht Benhadad: Dein Silber und dein Gold ist mein, und deine schönen Frauen und Kinder sind auch mein!
4Der König von Israel antwortete und sprach: Mein Herr und König, wie du gesagt hast: ich bin dein und alles, was ich habe!
5Und die Boten kamen wieder und sprachen: So spricht Benhadad: Weil ich zu dir gesandt und dir habe sagen lassen: Du sollst mir dein Silber und dein Gold und deine Weiber und deine Söhne geben,
6so will ich morgen um diese Zeit meine Knechte zu dir senden, daß sie dein Haus und deiner Knechte Häuser durchsuchen; und was in deinen Augen lieblich ist, sollen sie zuhanden nehmen und forttragen.
7Da berief der König von Israel alle Ältesten des Landes und sprach: Merket doch und sehet, daß dieser Böses vorhat! Denn er hat zu mir gesandt, um meine Weiber und meine Söhne, mein Silber und mein Gold zu fordern, und ich habe ihm dieses nicht verweigert.
8Da sprachen alle Ältesten und alles Volk zu ihm: Du sollst nicht darauf hören und nicht einwilligen!
9Und er sprach zu den Boten Benhadads: Saget meinem Herrn, dem König: Alles, was du deinem Knecht zuerst entboten hast, habe ich tun wollen, aber dieses kann ich nicht tun! Und die Boten gingen hin und meldeten solches.
10Da sandte Benhadad zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: Die Götter sollen mir dies und das tun, wenn der Staub Samarias hinreicht, daß jeder vom Volk, das ich anführe, nur eine Handvoll davon nehme!
11Aber der König von Israel antwortete und sprach: Saget: Wer das Schwert umgürtet, soll sich nicht rühmen wie der, der es abgürtet!
12Als Benhadad solches hörte und er gerade mit den Königen in den Zelten trank, sprach er zu seinen Knechten: Stellet euch zum Angriff! Da stellen sie sich zum Angriff gegen die Stadt.
13Aber siehe, ein Prophet trat zu Ahab, dem König von Israel, und sprach: So spricht der HERR: Hast du diesen ganzen großen Haufen gesehen? Siehe, ich will ihn heute in deine Hand geben, daß du erfahren sollst, daß ich der HERR bin!
14Ahab sprach: Durch wen? Er sprach: So spricht der HERR: Durch die Knappen der Bezirkshauptleute! Er sprach: Wer soll den Kampf beginnen? Er sprach: Du!
15Da musterte er die Knappen der Bezirkshauptleute, und es waren ihrer 232; und nach ihnen musterte er das ganze Volk, alle Kinder Israel, 7000 Mann.
16Und sie zogen aus am Mittag. Benhadad aber zechte und betrank sich in den Zelten samt den zweiunddreißig Königen, die ihm zu Hilfe gekommen waren.
17Aber die Knappen der Bezirkshauptleute zogen zuerst aus. Und Benhadads Kundschafter meldeten ihm: Es kommen Männer aus Samaria!
18Er sprach: Fanget sie lebendig, sie seien zum Frieden oder zum Streit ausgezogen!
19Jene aber zogen zur Stadt hinaus, nämlich die Knappen der Bezirkshauptleute und das Heer hinter ihnen her,
20und ein jeder schlug seinen Mann, so daß die Syrer flohen und Israel ihnen nachjagte. Benhadad aber, der König von Syrien, entrann auf einem Pferd mit den Reitern.
21Und der König von Israel zog aus und schlug Pferde und Wagen und brachte den Syrern eine große Niederlage bei.
22Da trat der Prophet zum König von Israel und sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin, stärke dich und merke und siehe zu, was du zu tun hast; denn der König von Syrien wird wider dich heraufziehen, wenn das Jahr vorbei ist!
23Aber die Knechte des Königs von Syrien sprachen zu ihm: Ihre Götter sind Berggötter, darum haben sie uns überwunden. O daß wir mit ihnen auf der Ebene streiten könnten; gewiß würden wir sie überwinden!
24Darum tue also: Setze die Könige ab von ihren Posten, und ernenne Statthalter an ihrer Stelle!
25Du aber verschaffe dir ein Heer wie das Heer, das du verloren hast, und Pferde und Wagen, wie jene waren, und laß uns in der Ebene wider sie streiten, so werden wir sie gewiß überwinden! Und er gehorchte ihrer Stimme und tat also.
26Als nun das Jahr vorbei war, musterte Benhadad die Syrer und zog herauf gen Aphek, um wider Israel zu streiten.
27Und die Kinder Israel wurden auch gemustert und mit Lebensmitteln versehen und zogen ihnen entgegen; und die Kinder Israel lagerten sich ihnen gegenüber wie zwei kleine Herden Ziegen; von den Syrern aber war das Land voll.
28Und der Mann Gottes trat herzu und sprach zum König von Israel: So spricht der HERR: Weil die Syrer gesagt haben, der HERR sei ein Gott der Berge und nicht ein Gott der Talgründe, so habe ich diese ganze große Menge in deine Hand gegeben, damit ihr erfahret, daß ich der HERR bin!
29Und sie lagerten sieben Tage lang einander gegenüber. Aber am siebenten Tag kam es zur Schlacht, und die Kinder Israel erschlugen von den Syrern an einem Tage 100000 Mann Fußvolk.
30Und die Übriggebliebenen flohen gen Aphek in die Stadt, und die Mauer fiel auf die übrigen 27000 Mann. Und Benhadad floh auch und kam in die Stadt, von einem Gemach in das andere.
31Da sprachen seine Knechte zu ihm: Siehe doch, wir haben gehört, daß die Könige des Hauses Israel barmherzige Könige seien; so laßt uns nun Säcke um unsre Lenden tun und Stricke um unser Haupt und zum König von Israel hinausgehen; vielleicht läßt er deine Seele leben!
32Und sie gürteten Säcke um ihre Lenden und legten Stricke um ihre Häupter und kamen zum König von Israel und sprachen: Benhadad, dein Knecht, läßt dir sagen: Laß doch meine Seele leben! Er aber sprach: Lebt er noch? Er ist mein Bruder!
33Und die Männer hielten das für günstig und griffen es eilends von ihm auf und sprachen: Benhadad ist dein Bruder! Er sprach: kommt und bringt ihn! Da ging Benhadad zu ihm hinaus, und er ließ ihn auf den Wagen steigen.
34Und Benhadad sprach: Die Städte, die mein Vater deinem Vater genommen hat, will ich dir wiedergeben; und mache dir Freiplätze zu Damaskus, wie mein Vater zu Samaria getan hat! Ich aber ,antwortete Ahab, lasse dich unter diesen Bedingungen frei! Und er machte einen Bund mit ihm und ließ ihn frei.
35Da sprach ein Mann unter den Prophetensöhnen zu seinem Nächsten durch das Wort des HERRN: Schlage mich doch! Der Mann aber weigerte sich, ihn zu schlagen.
36Da sprach er zu ihm: Weil du der Stimme des HERRN nicht gehorcht hast, siehe, so wird dich ein Löwe töten, wenn du von mir gehst! Und als er von ihm ging, fand ihn ein Löwe und tötete ihn.
37Und er fand einen andern Mann und sprach: Schlage mich doch! Und der Mann schlug ihn wund.
38Da ging der Prophet hin und trat zum König an den Weg und machte sich unkenntlich durch eine Binde über seinen Augen.
39Und als der König vorbeiging, rief er den König an und sprach: Dein Knecht war in den Streit gezogen und siehe, ein fremder Mann trat herzu und brachte einen Mann zu mir und sprach: Bewache diesen Mann! Wird man ihn vermissen, so soll dein Leben für sein Leben haften, oder du sollst ein Talent Silber darwägen!
40Und während dein Knecht hier und dort zu tun hatte, da war er verschwunden! Der König von Israel sprach zu ihm: Also ist dein Urteil, du hast es selbst gefällt.
41Da tat er eilends die Binde weg von seinen Augen. Und der König von Israel erkannte, daß er einer von den Propheten war.
42Er aber sprach zu ihm: So spricht der HERR: Weil du den von mir mit dem Bann belegten Mann deiner Hand entrinnen ließest, soll dein Leben für sein Leben und dein Volk für sein Volk haften!
43Also ging der König von Israel mißmutig und zornig nach Hause und kam nach Samaria.

1ENTONCES Ben-adad rey de Siria juntó á todo su ejército, y con él treinta y dos reyes, con caballos y carros: y subió, y puso cerco á Samaria, y combatióla.
2Y envió mensajeros á la ciudad á Achâb rey de Israel, diciendo:
3Así ha dicho Ben-adad: Tu plata y tu oro es mío, y tus mujeres y tus hijos hermosos son míos.
4Y el rey de Israel respondió, y dijo: Como tú dices, rey señor mío, yo soy tuyo, y todo lo que tengo.
5Y volviendo los mensajeros otra vez, dijeron: Así dijo Ben-adad: Yo te envié á decir: Tu plata y tu oro, y tus mujeres y tus hijos me darás.
6Además mañana á estas horas enviaré yo á ti mis siervos, los cuales escudriñarán tu casa, y las casas de tus siervos; y tomarán con sus manos, y llevarán todo lo precioso que tuvieres.
7Entonces el rey de Israel llamó á todos los ancianos de la tierra, y díjoles: Entended, y ved ahora cómo éste no busca sino mal: pues que ha enviado á mí por mis mujeres y mis hijos, y por mi plata y por mi oro; y yo no se lo he negado.
8Y todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo le respondieron: No le obedezcas, ni hagas lo que te pide.
9Entonces él respondió á los embajadores de Ben-adad: Decid al rey mi señor: Haré todo lo que mandaste á tu siervo al principio; mas esto no lo puedo hacer. Y los embajadores fueron, y diéronle la respuesta.
10Y Ben-adad tornó á enviarle á decir: Así me hagan los dioses, y así me añadan, que el polvo de Samaria no bastará á los puños de todo el pueblo que me sigue.
11Y el rey de Israel respondió, y dijo: Decidle, que no se alabe el que se ciñe, como el que ya se desciñe.
12Y como él oyó esta palabra, estando bebiendo con los reyes en las tiendas, dijo á sus siervos: Poned. Y ellos pusieron contra la ciudad.
13Y he aquí un profeta se llegó á Achâb rey de Israel, y le dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: ¿Has visto esta grande multitud? he aquí yo te la entregaré hoy en tu mano, para que conozcas que yo soy Jehová.
14Y respondió Achâb: ¿Por mano de quién? Y él dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: Por mano de los criados de los príncipes de las provincias. Y dijo Achâb: ¿Quién comenzará la batalla? Y él respondió: Tú.
15Entonces él reconoció los criados de los príncipes de las provincias, los cuales fueron doscientos treinta y dos. Luego reconoció todo el pueblo, todos los hijos de Israel, que fueron siete mil.
16Y salieron á medio día. Y estaba Ben-adad bebiendo, borracho en las tiendas, él y los reyes, los treinta y dos reyes que habían venido en su ayuda.
17Y los criados de los príncipes de las provincias salieron los primeros. Y había Ben-adad enviado quien le dió aviso, diciendo: Han salido hombres de Samaria.
18El entonces dijo: Si han salido por paz, tomadlos vivos; y si han salido para pelear, tomadlos vivos.
19Salieron pues de la ciudad los criados de los príncipes de las provincias, y en pos de ellos el ejército.
20E hirió cada uno al que venía contra sí: y huyeron los Siros, siguiéndolos los de Israel. Y el rey de Siria, Ben-adad, se escapó en un caballo con alguna gente de caballería.
21Y salió el rey de Israel, é hirió la gente de á caballo, y los carros; y deshizo los Siros con grande estrago.
22Llegándose luego el profeta al rey de Israel, le dijo: Ve, fortalécete, y considera y mira lo que has de hacer; porque pasado el año, el rey de Siria ha de venir contra ti.
23Y los siervos del rey de Siria le dijeron: Sus dioses son dioses de los montes, por eso nos han vencido; mas si peleáremos con ellos en la llanura, se verá si no los vencemos.
24Haz pues así: Saca á los reyes cada uno de su puesto, y pon capitanes en lugar de ellos.
25Y tú, fórmate otro ejército como el ejército que perdiste, caballos por caballos, y carros por carros; luego pelearemos con ellos en campo raso, y veremos si no los vencemos. Y él les dió oído, é hízolo así.
26Pasado el año, Ben-adad reconoció los Siros, y vino á Aphec á pelear contra Israel.
27Y los hijos de Israel fueron también inspeccionados, y tomando provisiones fuéronles al encuentro; y asentaron campo lo hijos de Israel delante de ellos, como dos rebañuelos de cabras; y los Siros henchían la tierra.
28Llegándose entonces el varón de Dios al rey de Israel, hablóle diciendo: Así dijo Jehová: Por cuanto los Siros han dicho, Jehová es Dios de los montes, no Dios de los valles, yo entregaré toda esta grande multitud en tu mano, para que conozcáis que yo soy Jehová.
29Siete días tuvieron asentado campo los unos delante de los otros, y al séptimo día se dió la batalla: y mataron los hijos de Israel de los Siros en un día cien mil hombres de á pie.
30Los demás huyeron á Aphec, á la ciudad: y el muro cayó sobre veinte y siete mil hombres que habían quedado. También Ben-adad vino huyendo á la ciudad, y escondíase de cámara en cámara.
31Entonces sus siervos le dijeron: He aquí, hemos oído de los reyes de la casa de Israel que son reyes clementes: pongamos pues ahora sacos en nuestros lomos, y sogas en nuestras cabezas, y salgamos al rey de Israel: por ventura te salvará la vida.
32Ciñeron pues sus lomos de sacos, y sogas á sus cabezas, y vinieron al rey de Israel, y dijéronle: Tu siervo Ben-adad dice: Ruégote que viva mi alma. Y él respondió: Si él vive aún, mi hermano es.
33Esto tomaron aquellos hombres por buen agüero, y presto tomaron esta palabra de su boca, y dijeron: ¡Tu hermano Ben-adad! Y él dijo: Id, y traedle. Ben-adad entonces se presentó á Achâb, y él le hizo subir en un carro.
34Y díjole Ben-adad: Las ciudades que mi padre tomó al tuyo, yo las restituiré; y haz plazas en Damasco para ti, como mi padre las hizo en Samaria. Y yo, dijo Achâb, te dejaré partir con esta alianza. Hizo pues con él alianza, y dejóle ir.
35Entonces un varón de los hijos de los profetas dijo á su compañero por palabra de Dios: Hiéreme ahora. Mas el otro varón no quiso herirle.
36Y él le dijo: Por cuanto no has obedecido á la palabra de Jehová, he aquí en apartándote de mí, te herirá un león. Y como se apartó de él, topóle un león, é hirióle.
37Encontróse luego con otro hombre, y díjole: Hiéreme ahora. Y el hombre le dió un golpe, é hízole una herida.
38Y el profeta se fué, y púsose delante del rey en el camino, y disfrazóse con un velo sobre los ojos.
39Y como el rey pasaba, él dió voces al rey, y dijo: Tu siervo salió entre la tropa: y he aquí apartándose uno, trájome un hombre, diciendo: Guarda á este hombre, y si llegare á faltar, tu vida será por la suya, ó pagarás un talento de plata.
40Y como tu siervo estaba ocupado á una parte y á otra, él desapareció. Entonces el rey de Israel le dijo: Esa será tu sentencia: tú la has pronunciado.
41Pero él se quitó de presto el velo de sobre sus ojos, y el rey de Israel conoció que era de los profetas.
42Y él le dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: Por cuanto soltaste de la mano el hombre de mi anatema, tu vida será por la suya, y tu pueblo por el suyo.
43Y el rey de Israel se fué á su casa triste y enojado, y llegó á Samaria.

1And Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.
2And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Ben-hadad,
3Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.
4And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.
5And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Ben-hadad, saying, Although I have sent unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;
6Yet I will send my servants unto thee to morrow about this time, and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.
7Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
8And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken not unto him, nor consent.
9Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.
10And Ben-hadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
11And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.
12And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set yourselves in array. And they set themselves in array against the city.
13And, behold, there came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.
14And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.
15Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
16And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.
17And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
18And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.
19So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.
20And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the horsemen.
21And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.
22And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
23And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
24And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:
25And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.
26And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
27And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.
28And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
29And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day.
30But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. And Ben-hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.
31And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life.
32So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
33Now the men did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him, and did hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Ben-hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
34And Ben-hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.
35And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.
36Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.
37Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded him.
38So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
39And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
40And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.
41And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.
42And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
43And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.

1Ben Hadad the king of Syria gathered all his army together; and there were thirty-two kings with him, with horses and chariots. He went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.
2He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel and said to him, “Ben Hadad says,
3‘Your silver and your gold are mine. Your wives also and your children, even the best, are mine.’”
4The king of Israel answered, “It is according to your saying, my lord, O king. I am yours, and all that I have.”
5The messengers came again and said, “Ben Hadad says, ‘I sent indeed to you, saying, “You shall deliver me your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children;
6but I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they will search your house and the houses of your servants. Whatever is pleasant in your eyes, they will put it in their hand, and take it away.”’”
7Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, “Please notice how this man seeks mischief; for he sent to me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I didn’t deny him.”
8All the elders and all the people said to him, “Don’t listen, and don’t consent.”
9Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you sent for to your servant at the first I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’” The messengers departed and brought him back the message.
10Ben Hadad sent to him, and said, “The gods do so to me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria will be enough for handfuls for all the people who follow me.”
11The king of Israel answered, “Tell him, ‘Don’t let him who puts on his armor brag like he who takes it off.’”
12When Ben Hadad heard this message as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, he said to his servants, “Prepare to attack!” So they prepared to attack the city.
13Behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel, and said, “The LORD says, ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand today. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
14Ahab said, “By whom?” He said, “The LORD says, ‘By the young men of the princes of the provinces.’” Then he said, “Who shall begin the battle?” He answered, “You.”
15Then he mustered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty-two. After them, he mustered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
16They went out at noon. But Ben Hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty-two kings who helped him.
17The young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben Hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, “Men are coming out from Samaria.”
18He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; or if they have come out for war, take them alive.”
19So these went out of the city, the young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them.
20They each killed his man. The Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them. Ben Hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen.
21The king of Israel went out and struck the horses and chariots, and killed the Syrians with a great slaughter.
22The prophet came near to the king of Israel and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself, and plan what you must do, for at the return of the year, the king of Syria will come up against you.”
23The servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their god is a god of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we. But let’s fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than they.
24Do this thing: take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their place.
25Muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse and chariot for chariot. We will fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than they are.” He listened to their voice and did so.
26At the return of the year, Ben Hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.
27The children of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and went against them. The children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of young goats, but the Syrians filled the country.
28A man of God came near and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, “The LORD says, ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The LORD is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys,” therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the LORD.’”
29They encamped opposite each other for seven days. Then on the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand footmen of the Syrians in one day.
30But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men who were left. Ben Hadad fled and came into the city, into an inner room.
31His servants said to him, “See now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please let us put sackcloth on our bodies and ropes on our heads, and go out to the king of Israel. Maybe he will save your life.”
32So they put sackcloth on their bodies and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, “Your servant Ben Hadad says, ‘Please let me live.’” He said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
33Now the men observed diligently and hurried to take this phrase; and they said, “Your brother Ben Hadad.” Then he said, “Go, bring him.” Then Ben Hadad came out to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
34Ben Hadad said to him, “The cities which my father took from your father I will restore. You shall make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria.” “I”, said Ahab, “will let you go with this covenant.” So he made a covenant with him and let him go.
35A certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow by the LORD’s word, “Please strike me!” The man refused to strike him.
36Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the LORD’s voice, behold, as soon as you have departed from me, a lion will kill you.” As soon as he had departed from him, a lion found him and killed him.
37Then he found another man, and said, “Please strike me.” The man struck him and wounded him.
38So the prophet departed and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with his headband over his eyes.
39As the king passed by, he cried to the king, and he said, “Your servant went out into the middle of the battle; and behold, a man came over and brought a man to me, and said, ‘Guard this man! If by any means he is missing, then your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’
40As your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.” The king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be. You yourself have decided it.”
41He hurried, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized that he was one of the prophets.
42He said to him, “The LORD says, ‘Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life will take the place of his life, and your people take the place of his people.’”
43The king of Israel went to his house sullen and angry, and came to Samaria.
