1Bin ich nicht frei? Bin ich nicht ein Apostel? Habe ich nicht unsern Herrn Jesus Christus gesehen? Seid nicht ihr mein Werk im Herrn?
2Bin ich für andere kein Apostel, so bin ich es doch für euch; denn das Siegel meines Apostelamts seid ihr in dem Herrn.
3Dies ist meine Verteidigung denen gegenüber, die mich zur Rede stellen:
4Haben wir nicht Vollmacht, zu essen und zu trinken?
5Haben wir nicht Vollmacht, eine Schwester als Gattin mit uns zu führen, wie auch die andern Apostel und die Brüder des Herrn und Kephas?
6Oder haben nur ich und Barnabas keine Vollmacht, die Arbeit zu unterlassen?
7Wer zieht je auf eigene Kosten ins Feld? Wer pflanzt einen Weinberg und ißt nicht von dessen Frucht? Oder wer weidet eine Herde und nährt sich nicht von der Milch der Herde?
8Sage ich das nur nach menschlicher Weise? Sagt es nicht auch das Gesetz?
9Ja, im Gesetz Moses steht geschrieben: «Du sollst dem Ochsen das Maul nicht verbinden, wenn er drischt.»
10Kümmert sich Gott nur um die Ochsen? Sagt er das nicht vielmehr wegen uns? Denn unsertwegen steht ja geschrieben, daß, wer pflügt, auf Hoffnung hin pflügen, und wer drischt, auf Hoffnung hin dreschen soll, daß er des Gehofften teilhaftig werde.
11Wenn wir euch die geistlichen Güter gesät haben, ist es etwas Großes, wenn wir von euch diejenigen für den Leib ernten?
12Wenn andere an diesem Recht über euch Anteil haben, sollten wir es nicht viel eher? Aber wir haben uns dieses Rechtes nicht bedient, sondern wir ertragen alles, damit wir dem Evangelium Christi kein Hindernis bereiten.
13Wisset ihr nicht, daß die, welche die heiligen Dienstverrichtungen besorgen, auch vom Heiligtum essen, und daß die, welche des Altars warten, vom Altar ihren Anteil erhalten?
14So hat auch der Herr verordnet, daß die, welche das Evangelium verkündigen, vom Evangelium leben sollen.
15Ich aber habe davon keinerlei Gebrauch gemacht; ich habe auch solches nicht darum geschrieben, damit es mit mir so gehalten werde. Viel lieber wollte ich sterben, als daß mir jemand meinen Ruhm zunichte machte!
16Denn wenn ich das Evangelium predige, so ist das kein Ruhm für mich; denn ich bin dazu verpflichtet, und wehe mir, wenn ich das Evangelium nicht predigte!
17Tue ich es freiwillig, so habe ich Lohn; wenn aber unfreiwillig, bin ich gleichwohl mit dem Verwalteramt betraut.
18Was ist denn nun mein Lohn? Daß ich bei meiner Verkündigung des Evangeliums dieses kostenfrei darbiete, so daß ich von meinem Anspruch ans Evangelium keinen Gebrauch mache.
19Denn wiewohl ich frei bin von allen, habe ich mich doch allen zum Knecht gemacht, um ihrer desto mehr zu gewinnen.
20Den Juden bin ich wie ein Jude geworden, auf daß ich die Juden gewinne; denen, die unter dem Gesetz sind, bin ich geworden, als wäre ich unter dem Gesetz (obschon ich nicht unter dem Gesetz bin), damit ich die unter dem Gesetz gewinne;
21denen, die ohne Gesetz sind, bin ich geworden, als wäre ich ohne Gesetz (wiewohl ich nicht ohne göttliches Gesetz lebe, sondern in dem Gesetz Christi), damit ich die gewinne, welche ohne Gesetz sind.
22Den Schwachen bin ich wie ein Schwacher geworden, damit ich die Schwachen gewinne; ich bin allen alles geworden, damit ich allenthalben etliche rette.
23Alles aber tue ich um des Evangeliums willen, um an ihm teilzuhaben.
24Wisset ihr nicht, daß die, welche in der Rennbahn laufen, zwar alle laufen, aber nur einer den Preis erlangt? Laufet so, daß ihr ihn erlanget!
25Jeder aber, der sich am Wettlauf beteiligt, ist enthaltsam in allem; jene, um einen vergänglichen Kranz zu empfangen, wir aber einen unvergänglichen.
26So laufe ich nun nicht wie aufs Ungewisse; ich führe meinen Faustkampf nicht mit bloßen Luftstreichen,
27sondern ich zerschlage meinen Leib und behandle ihn als Sklaven, damit ich nicht andern predige und selbst verwerflich werde.

1¿NO soy apóstol? ¿no soy libre? ¿no he visto á Jesús el Señor nuestro? ¿no sois vosotros mi obra en el Señor?
2Si á los otros no soy apóstol, á vosotros ciertamente lo soy: porque el sello de mi apostolado sois vosotros en el Señor.
3Esta es mi respuesta á los que me preguntan.
4Qué, ¿no tenemos potestad de comer y de beber?
5¿No tenemos potestad de traer con nosotros una hermana mujer también como los otros apóstoles, y los hermanos del Señor, y Cefas?
6¿O sólo yo y Bernabé no tenemos potestad de no trabajar?
7¿Quién jamás peleó á sus expensas? ¿quién planta viña, y no come de su fruto? ¿ó quién apacienta el ganado, y no come de la leche del ganado?
8¿Digo esto según los hombres? ¿no dice esto también la ley?
9Porque en la ley de Moisés está escrito: No pondrás bozal al buey que trilla. ¿Tiene Dios cuidado de los bueyes?
10¿O dícelo enteramente por nosotros? Pues por nosotros está escrito; porque con esperanza ha de arar el que ara; y el que trilla, con esperanza de recibir el fruto.
11Si nosotros os sembramos lo espiritual, ¿es gran cosa si segáremos lo vuestro carnal?
12Si otros tienen en vosotros esta potestad, ¿no más bien nosotros? Mas no hemos usado de esta potestad: antes lo sufrimos todo, por no poner ningún obstáculo al evangelio de Cristo.
13¿No sabéis que los que trabajan en el santuario, comen del santuario; y que los que sirven al altar, del altar participan?
14Así también ordenó el Señor á los que anuncian el evangelio, que vivan del evangelio.
15Mas yo de nada de esto me aproveché: ni tampoco he escrito esto para que se haga así conmigo; porque tengo por mejor morir, antes que nadie haga vana esta mi gloria.
16Pues bien que anuncio el evangelio, no tengo por qué gloriarme; porque me es impuesta necesidad; y ¡ay de mí si no anunciare el evangelio!
17Por lo cual, si lo hago de voluntad, premio tendré; mas si por fuerza, la dispensación me ha sido encargada.
18¿Cuál, pues, es mi merced? Que predicando el evangelio, ponga el evangelio de Cristo de balde, para no usar mal de mi potestad en el evangelio.
19Por lo cual, siendo libre para con todos, me he hecho siervo de todos por ganar á más.
20Heme hecho á los Judíos como Judío, por ganar á los Judíos; á los que están sujetos á la ley (aunque yo no sea sujeto á la ley) como sujeto á la ley, por ganar á los que están sujetos á la ley;
21A los que son sin ley, como si yo fuera sin ley, (no estando yo sin ley de Dios, mas en la ley de Cristo) por ganar á los que estaban sin ley.
22Me he hecho á los flacos flaco, por ganar á los flacos: á todos me he hecho todo, para que de todo punto salve á algunos.
23Y esto hago por causa del evangelio, por hacerme juntamente participante de él.
24¿No sabéis que los que corren en el estadio, todos á la verdad corren, mas uno lleva el premio? Corred de tal manera que lo obtengáis.
25Y todo aquel que lucha, de todo se abstiene: y ellos, á la verdad, para recibir una corona corruptible; mas nosotros, incorruptible.
26Así que, yo de esta manera corro, no como á cosa incierta; de esta manera peleo, no como quien hiere el aire:
27Antes hiero mi cuerpo, y lo pongo en servidumbre; no sea que, habiendo predicado á otros, yo mismo venga á ser reprobado.

1Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?
2If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.
3Mine answer to them that do examine me is this,
4Have we not power to eat and to drink?
5Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?
6Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?
7Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
8Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
9For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
10Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
11If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
12If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
13Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
14Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
15But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.
16For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!
17For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.
18What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.
19For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
20And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
21To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
22To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
23And this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.
24Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
25And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
26I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

1Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Haven’t I seen Jesus Christ, our Lord? Aren’t you my work in the Lord?
2If to others I am not an apostle, yet at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
3My defense to those who examine me is this:
4Have we no right to eat and to drink?
5Have we no right to take along a wife who is a believer, even as the rest of the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?
6Or have only Barnabas and I no right to not work?
7What soldier ever serves at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard, and doesn’t eat of its fruit? Or who feeds a flock, and doesn’t drink from the flock’s milk?
8Do I speak these things according to the ways of men? Or doesn’t the law also say the same thing?
9For it is written in the law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.” Is it for the oxen that God cares,
10or does he say it assuredly for our sake? Yes, it was written for our sake, because he who plows ought to plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should partake of his hope.
11If we sowed to you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we reap your fleshly things?
12If others partake of this right over you, don’t we yet more? Nevertheless we didn’t use this right, but we bear all things, that we may cause no hindrance to the Good News of Christ.
13Don’t you know that those who serve around sacred things eat from the things of the temple, and those who wait on the altar have their portion with the altar?
14Even so the Lord ordained that those who proclaim the Good News should live from the Good News.
15But I have used none of these things, and I don’t write these things that it may be done so in my case; for I would rather die, than that anyone should make my boasting void.
16For if I preach the Good News, I have nothing to boast about, for necessity is laid on me; but woe is to me if I don’t preach the Good News.
17For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward. But if not of my own will, I have a stewardship entrusted to me.
18What then is my reward? That when I preach the Good News, I may present the Good News of Christ without charge, so as not to abuse my authority in the Good News.
19For though I was free from all, I brought myself under bondage to all, that I might gain the more.
20To the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain those who are under the law;
21to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law.
22To the weak I became as weak, that I might gain the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I may by all means save some.
23Now I do this for the sake of the Good News, that I may be a joint partaker of it.
24Don’t you know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run like that, so that you may win.
25Every man who strives in the games exercises self-control in all things. Now they do it to receive a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible.
26I therefore run like that, not aimlessly. I fight like that, not beating the air,
27but I beat my body and bring it into submission, lest by any means, after I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.
