1Et Satan se leva contre Israël et incita David à faire le dénombrement d'Israël.
2Et David dit à Joab et aux chefs du peuple : Allez ! dénombrez Israël, de Béerséba jusqu'à Dan, et faites-moi rapport, afin que j'en sache le nombre.
3Et Joab dit : Que l'Eternel rende son peuple cent fois plus nombreux qu'ils ne le sont ! Ne sont-ils pas tous, ô roi mon seigneur, les serviteurs de mon seigneur ? Pourquoi mon seigneur demande-t-il cela ? Pourquoi rendre ainsi Israël coupable ?
4Mais l'ordre du roi prévalut contre Joab ; et Joab se mit en route et parcourut tout Israël, et revint à Jérusalem.
5Et Joab donna à David le chiffre du recensement du peuple : il y avait dans tout Israël onze cent mille hommes tirant l'épée, et en Juda quatre cent soixante-dix mille hommes tirant l'épée.
6Il n'avait pas compté parmi eux Lévi et Benjamin, car l'ordre du roi était une abomination pour Joab.
7Et la chose déplut à Dieu, et il frappa Israël.
8Et David dit à Dieu : J'ai commis un grand péché en faisant cela ! Et maintenant, ôte, je te prie, l'iniquité de ton serviteur, car j'ai agi très follement.
9Et l'Eternel parla à Gad, le voyant de David, en ces mots :
10Va, et parle à David en ces mots : Ainsi a dit l'Eternel : Je mets devant toi trois choses ; choisis-en une, et je te la ferai.
11Et Gad vint vers David et lui dit : Ainsi a dit l'Eternel : Fais ton choix !
12Ou bien trois ans de famine, ou bien trois mois pendant lesquels tu seras en fuite devant tes adversaires, l'épée de tes ennemis t' atteignant, ou bien trois jours pendant lesquels l'épée de l'Eternel et la peste seront dans le pays et l'ange de l'Eternel portera la destruction dans tout le territoire d'Israël. Maintenant vois ce que je dois répondre à celui qui m'envoie.
13Et David dit à Gad : Je suis dans une grande angoisse ! Que je tombe entre les mains de l'Eternel, car ses compassions sont immenses ; et que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes !
14Et l'Eternel envoya la peste en Israël, et il tomba d'Israël soixante-dix mille hommes.
15Et Dieu envoya un ange contre Jérusalem pour la détruire ; et comme l'ange se disposait à détruire, l'Eternel regarda, et il se repentit de ce mal, et il dit à l'ange destructeur : Assez ! Retire maintenant ta main ! Et l'ange de l'Eternel se tenait près de l'aire d'Ornan, le Jébusien.
16Et David, ayant levé les yeux, vit l'ange de l'Eternel se tenant entre la terre et le ciel et ayant à la main son épée nue dirigée contre Jérusalem. Et David et les Anciens, couverts de sacs, tombèrent sur leur visage,
17et David dit à Dieu : N'est-ce pas moi qui ai commandé de dénombrer le peuple ? C'est moi qui ai péché et qui ai commis ce grand mal ! Mais ces brebis, qu'ont-elles fait ? Eternel, mon Dieu ! que ta main soit donc sur moi et sur la maison de mon père ; mais quant à ton peuple, qu'elle ne soit pas sur lui pour le frapper !
18Et l'ange de l'Eternel dit à Gad de parler à David, afin que David montât pour dresser un autel à l'Eternel dans l'aire d'Ornan, le Jébusien.
19Et David monta, selon la parole que Gad avait prononcée au nom de l'Eternel.
20Et Ornan, s'étant retourné, vit l'ange ; et ses quatre fils, qui étaient avec lui, se cachèrent ; ornan était occupé à fouler du blé.
21Et David arriva vers Ornan, et Ornan regarda et vit David ; et il sortit de l'aire et se prosterna devant David, le visage contre terre.
22Et David dit à Ornan : Cède-moi l'emplacement de l'aire, afin que j'y bâtisse un autel à l'Eternel ; cède-le moi pour l'argent qu'il vaut ; et que la plaie se retire de dessus le peuple.
23Et Ornan dit à David : Prends-le, et que mon seigneur le roi fasse ce qui lui semblera bon ; vois, je donne les bœufs pour les holocaustes, et les chars pour le bois, et le blé pour l'oblation ; je donne le tout.
24Et le roi David dit à Ornan : Non ! mais je veux l'acheter, l'acheter pour l'argent qu'il vaut, car je ne prendrai pas pour l'Eternel ce qui est à toi, et je n'offrirai pas un holocauste qui ne me coûte rien !
25Et David donna à Ornan pour l'emplacement le poids de six cents sicles d'or.
26Et David bâtit là un autel à l'Eternel ; il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices d'actions de grâces, et il invoqua l'Eternel qui lui répondit en faisant descendre le feu du ciel sur l'autel de l'holocauste.
27Et l'Eternel parla à l'ange, et il remit son épée dans le fourreau.
28A cette époque-là, David, voyant que l'Eternel l'avait exaucé dans l'aire d'ornan le Jébusien, y offrait des sacrifices.
29Et la Demeure de l'Eternel que Moïse avait faite dans le désert et l'autel des holocaustes se trouvaient en ce temps sur le haut-lieu, à Gabaon.
30Et David ne pouvait pas aller devant cet autel pour chercher Dieu, à cause de l'effroi que lui avait causé l'épée de l'ange de l'Eternel.

1MAS Satanás se levantó contra Israel, é incitó á David á que contase á Israel.
2Y dijo David á Joab y á los príncipes del pueblo: Id, contad á Israel desde Beer-seba hasta Dan, y traedme el número de ellos para que yo lo sepa.
3Y dijo Joab: Añada Jehová á su pueblo cien veces otros tantos. Rey señor mío, ¿no son todos estos siervos de mi señor? ¿para qué procura mi señor esto, que será pernicioso á Israel?
4Mas el mandamiento del rey pudo más que Joab. Salió por tanto Joab, y fué por todo Israel; y volvió á Jerusalem, y dió la cuenta del número del pueblo á David.
5Y hallóse en todo Israel que sacaban espada, once veces cien mil; y de Judá cuatrocientos y setenta mil hombres que sacaban espada.
6Entre estos no fueron contados los Levitas, ni los hijos de Benjamín, porque Joab abominaba el mandamiento del rey.
7Asimismo desagradó este negocio á los ojos de Dios, é hirió á Israel.
8Y dijo David á Dios: He pecado gravemente en hacer esto: ruégote que hagas pasar la iniquidad de tu siervo, porque yo he hecho muy locamente.
9Y habló Jehová á Gad, vidente de David, diciendo:
10Ve, y habla á David, y dile: Así ha dicho Jehová: Tres cosas te propongo; escoge de ellas una que yo haga contigo.
11Y viniendo Gad á David, díjole: Así ha dicho Jehová:
12Escógete, ó tres años de hambre; ó ser por tres meses deshecho delante de tus enemigos, y que la espada de tus adversarios te alcance; ó por tres días la espada de Jehová y pestilencia en la tierra, y que el ángel de Jehová destruya en todo el término de Israel: mira pues qué he de responder al que me ha enviado.
13Entonces David dijo á Gad: Estoy en grande angustia: ruego que yo caiga en la mano de Jehová; porque sus misericordias son muchas en extremo, y que no caiga yo en manos de hombres.
14Así Jehová dió pestilencia en Israel, y cayeron de Israel setenta mil hombres.
15Y envió Jehová el ángel á Jerusalem para destruirla: pero estando él destruyendo, miró Jehová, y arrepintióse de aquel mal,
16Y dijo al ángel que destruía: Basta ya; detén tu mano. Y el ángel de Jehová estaba junto á la era de Ornán Jebuseo.
17Y alzando David sus ojos, vió al ángel de Jehová, que estaba entre el cielo y la tierra, teniendo un espada desnuda en su mano, extendida contra Jerusalem. Entonces David y los ancianos se postraron sobre sus rostros, cubiertos de sacos.
18Y dijo David á Dios: ¿No soy yo el que hizo contar el pueblo? Yo mismo soy el que pequé, y ciertamente he hecho mal; mas estas ovejas, ¿qué han hecho? Jehová Dios mío, sea ahora tu mano contra mí, y contra la casa de mi padre, y no haya plaga en tu pueblo.
19Y el ángel de Jehová ordenó á Gad que dijese á David, que subiese y construyese un altar á Jehová en la era de Ornán Jebuseo.
20Entonces David subió, conforme á la palabra de Gad que le había dicho en nombre de Jehová.
21Y volviéndose Ornán vió al ángel; por lo que se escondieron cuatro hijos suyos que con él estaban. Y Ornán trillaba el trigo.
22Y viniendo David á Ornán, miró éste, y vió á David: y saliendo de la era, postróse en tierra á David.
23Entonces dijo David á Ornán: Dame este lugar de la era, en que edifique un altar á Jehová, y dámelo por su cabal precio, para que cese la plaga del pueblo.
24Y Ornán respondió á David: Tómalo para ti, y haga mi señor el rey lo que bien le pareciere: y aun los bueyes daré para el holocausto, y los trillos para leña, y trigo para el presente: yo lo doy todo.
25Entonces el rey David dijo á Ornán: No, sino que efectivamente la compraré por su justo precio: porque no tomaré para Jehová lo que es tuyo, ni sacrificaré holocausto que nada me cueste.
26Y dió David á Ornán por el lugar seiscientos siclos de oro por peso.
27Y edificó allí David un altar á Jehová, en el que ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios pacíficos, é invocó á Jehová, el cual le respondió por fuego de los cielos en el altar del holocausto.
28Y como Jehová habló al ángel, él volvió su espada á la vaina.
29Entonces viendo David que Jehová le había oído en la era de Ornán Jebuseo, sacrificó allí.
30Y el tabernáculo de Jehová que Moisés había hecho en el desierto, y el altar del holocausto, estaban entonces en el alto de Gabaón: Mas David no pudo ir allá á consultar á Dios, porque estaba espantado á causa de la espada del ángel de Jehová.
King James Version
1And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.
2And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
3And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?
4Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
5And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.
6But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.
7And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.
8And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
9And the LORD spake unto Gad, David’s seer, saying,
10Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
11So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee
12Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
13And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
14So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.
15And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
17And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
18Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.
20And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
21And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
22Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.
23And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.
24And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
25So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.
26And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.
27And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.
28At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
29For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon.
30But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.

1Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to take a census of Israel.
2David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know how many there are.”
3Joab said, “May the LORD make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”
4Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, then came to Jerusalem.
5Joab gave the sum of the census of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew a sword; and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew a sword.
6But he didn’t count Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.
7God was displeased with this thing; therefore he struck Israel.
8David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”
9The LORD spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,
10“Go and speak to David, saying, ‘The LORD says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”
11So Gad came to David and said to him, “The LORD says, ‘Take your choice:
12either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days of the sword of the LORD, even pestilence in the land, and the LORD’s angel destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.’”
13David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into the LORD’s hand, for his mercies are very great. Don’t let me fall into man’s hand.”
14So the LORD sent a pestilence on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.
15God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy, the LORD saw, and he relented of the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” the LORD’s angel was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16David lifted up his eyes, and saw the LORD’s angel standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.
17David said to God, “Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O LORD my God, be against me and against my father’s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.”
18Then the LORD’s angel commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in the LORD’s name.
20Ornan turned back and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
21As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
22Then David said to Ornan, “Sell me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to the LORD on it. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”
23Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all.”
24King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for the LORD, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
25So David gave to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place.
26David built an altar to the LORD there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on the LORD; and he answered him from the sky by fire on the altar of burnt offering.
27Then the LORD commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.
28At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
29For the LORD’s tabernacle, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.
30But David couldn’t go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid because of the sword of the LORD’s angel.
